RTÉ’s Joe Duffy
This afternoon.
On RTÉ’s Liveline.
Irish nurse Carol, who studied in Edinburgh, Scotland and is not registered with the Irish nursing body, told show host Joe Duffy that she is returning to Ireland to work but she has to pay €350 and wait 90 days before she will be able to work in an Irish hospital.
She told Mr Duffy and his listeners that she has been working in respiratory and emergency department nursing for the past four years.
Carol added:
“Part of the form I’m going to be filling out now is proof from the university in Scotland that my course was taught through English…I wish I was joking.”
Anyone?

Burdensome bureaucracy aside and as someone who left Ireland to study and to work, I’m rather torn on this one. On one hand, it seems laudable that people would return home to assist their own in a time of national crisis. On the other, would you expect a warm welcome back when it’s all over bar the shouting, if you abandon the system that has given you your career at the very moment it too needs you most?
yeah, thought that too while listening to the irish doctors in NYC talking about coming home en masse
this is hitting everywhere
if I was their employer, I’d tell them not to fupping bother coming back
Damn that headline. I thought Joe Duffy was announcing he’d got the virus… whatever.

They would need to check she wasn’t taught by someone with a strong Glaswegian accent who had sneaked under the fence into Edinburgh. My wife has tried for around 10 years to change the spelling of her surname by one letter an O rather than an A and has only recently achieved this. I think they have exceptionally pedantic administrators who should be swept away during this emergency
FYI Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland are waiving fees for anyone that wises to restore their name to the Register of Nurses and Midwives.
They shouldn’t have been charging in the first place.
Why?
The NMBI need to keep an up-to-date registry. By applying a small fee nurses will actively remove themselves when they are not working/leave the country. If they don’t charge the register will very quickly become out-of-date full of people that are no longer relevant.
I’m not a nurse/involved with nurses so am open to understanding another way that a registry can be accurately maintained without a charge.
The fee is 350euro which is extorionate at the best of times, a nominal fee of say 25euro should be more than sufficient.
350 is a first time registration fee for non Irish trained nurses.
Same way that (for instance) the PSC Card keeps a register of people using the welfare services. Those with one don’t have to pay to register, the card goes out of date and they renew it. No charge.
Who pays the cost of registry maintenance and issue of new cards?
That is PSC has a cost, a big one.
Unless you need to refresh your card each year it will get out of date quickly.
Point is that the system for registration and renewal could easily be applied to the nurses. The cost of keeping the system is spread, like the PSC, via our taxes.
If you’re going down the road of registering nurses as professionals, then why not make it mandatory for other ‘professionals’ such as TDs to also register and renew, or managers in the health service, or Chief Officers of government departments, or Gardai, or Army, and charge them too?
The registration fee is unfair. If they’re qualified, then they should have automatic free registration, renewable.
@GiggidyGoo
Are you for real? Can you really not tell the difference between a nurse and “TDs , managers in the health service, or Chief Officers of government departments, or Gardai, or Army”?
I’ll try to make it simple:
1. There are lots of different types of nurses. They need different training for different nurse jobs.
2. There are lots and lots of different places that employ nurses. They need to make sure they get the right type of nurse.
3. A register makes sure that a company gets the right type of nurse for their particular job.
The registry is there to help an employer understand how training in one country is transferable to a different country. It helps answer the question: “Is this nurse qualified for this role”
TDs do have to register at least every 5 years. It is called an election. Gardaí are trained by the organisation they work for so there is no recognition of qualifications required. Are you forgetting the cases of incompetent Doctors trained abroad who had to be fired as people were at risk? They need to do better but there are reasons why such a system is required.
This is not a surprise. Anyone who has had dealings with these agencies know that their most important agenda is ass-covering and box ticking, not facilitating the profession they are supposed to serve or the public who pay their salaries.
I wonder do they really require proof or is it just ticking a box on a form?
It is worrying that they are using paper forms though. These processes should have been digitised long ago. Emergency resources should immediately be put into getting these forms online. It wouldn’t take that long to build a webform for Nurses to submit their info.
Union- it sounds similar to onion when you say it out loud and as most of The Labour Party are about cruise away- maybe a few viruses are not such a bad thing after all.
Nothing to do with any Union.
“1850 715 815 wash your hands, back after this”.
The NMBI is an expensive quango fitted out in fancy offices with a Board elected and
nominated by who, no wonder the registration fee is 350 Euros, its a wonder it is not
a multiple of this, we have boards for this and that, the only reason for setting them up
is to remove these bodies from democratic control and oversight, is Duffy running the
show from Home……?
Wow, they have an office. Lucky them. Get a grio.
The scariest aspect of of C-19 in Ireland is Joe Duffy, RTÉ and Newstalk. I’ve listened to radio stations randomly over the past few days and even though I’ve changed channels, the comments being aired through media [and BS] twitter/ FB etc… are terrifying and borderline vigilante; It’s apparent how easily people are panicked and manipulated to the point whereby logic is abandoned at all costs.
Human nature and the pack mentality is more of a threat than C-19 ever will be.
Lyric is your only man!
Absolutely! Lyric is the business.
Radio Paradise is great, if you listen to radio online, and you can get some great music streams on youtube too.
