    What am I missing here?

    https://www.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/coronavirus-ireland-15000-applications-for-350-weekly-payment-rejected-39086997.html

    From the above it’s stated
“A total of 283,000 people have been approved for the new €350 a week emergency pandemic payment that was announced earlier this month following mass layoffs due to the coronavirus.
This compares with 201,000 people in receipt of standard jobseeker payments as of Friday last, according to figures released by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection this morning.”

    Now
    https://www.cso.ie/en/statistics/labourmarket/labourforcesurveylfs/
    From this.

    IndicatorQuarter 4 2019
    Employed 2,361,200
    Unemployed 110,600
    In labour force 2,471,700
    Not in labour force 1,471,000

What am I missing here? The Labour Force Survey for Q4 last year tells us that the unemployment level was 110,600. However the number of people receiving ‘Standard’ (not including ‘covid’) jobseekers payments before the Covid ones came into play was 201,000.
That’s 201,000 people that were unemployed, before the Covid19 payments came into play.

201,000 (Actual receiving standard jobseekers) minus 110,600 (Labour Force Survey unemployed) = 90,400 of a difference. Doesn’t that suggest that the LFS is a load of bunkum, and that the actual unemployment rate is almost twice as much as the CSO tells us?

        Additionally…
        1. many who were casual workers who receive part dole can now on losing their part time job receive Covid-19 payment
        2. Those on ‘back to work enterprise allowance’ have their btwea stopped and move onto COVID payment
        3. Those on ‘one parent family’ payment who lost their part time job move to COVID payment
        4. Those on CE schemes who lost job move to covid…
        5. And many other such moves…

Yes, you are missing something. Its called ‘detail’ behind top line non-comparable figures.

        Glad to help

What’s the ‘Standard’ Jobseekers benefit amount? (Not BTWEA, Not Part-dole, not one parent, not CE schemes, not ‘other such moves’). The ‘Standard’ amount of jobseekers.- if you can answer that, you’ll help yourself.

          1. Clampers Outside

There is no standard amount, truth be told. There is a maximum amount which is 203 / week on Jobseekers Benefit which is not means tested for a max period of 9 months depending on a person’s prsi contributions; and this maximum amount applies Jobseekers Allowance which is means tested.

Jobseekers payments of the many varying types are as close to a ‘Standard’ you can get, by name. The amount paid to individuals depends on contributions paid, and that amount has a maximum, not a ‘standard’.

  2. GiggidyGoo

Define ‘Standard’ though. If someone works and can claim a portion of Jobseekers, then the rate he/she would get is a ‘reduced’ payment, not the ‘standard’ payment?

You’ll have to talk to the author of the article.
My reading of it is they mean the normal pre-COVID welfare payment (regardless of if it is a full payment or a reduced payment).

In an earlier paragraph it says:
“Meanwhile, there are now more people on emergency coronavirus unemployment payments than the standard dole.”

      1. GiggidyGoo

It’s slightly confusing. I read it as there are an additional group of people, 283,000, receiving the Covid payment – separate from the 210,000.

(As of 21st March, 140,000 people lost their job in Ireland due to the virus in a four-day period, so the 283,000 at this stage may be an accurate reflection of the number of Covid-related job losses to date)

        1. Clampers Outside

You read wrong then. See a few the examples above in the comment posted twice for reasons why there is overlap in those two figures of 140k and 283k.

WOMEN IN MALAYSIA MUST NOT NAG HUSBANDS DURING COVID-19 CRISIS.
The Guardian reports a Malaysian government source: In a series of online posters with the hashtag #WomenPreventCOVID19, Malaysia’s women’s affairs ministry issued advice on how to avoid domestic conflicts during the partial lockdown.
One of the campaign posters depicted a man sitting on a sofa, and asked women to refrain from being “sarcastic” if they need help with household chores.
Avoid nagging your husband, another poster said, attempting to inject humour by using a voice similar to the anime character Doraemon – a blue robot cat popular across Asia.
The ministry also urged women to dress up and wear their makeup while working from home.”
Meanwhile, in other news, men in America have been advised not to point loaded shotguns at household pets, to shave regularly, to brush their teeth before going to bed and to get up at 6 am to put breakfast cereal on the table for the kids.

Just spoke with a friend in England – he has COPD.
He received a letter from the NHS advising him that he would be a high-risk person.
It advised him that the local support is there for him to collect groceries, prescriptions, and provided local numbers in his area for him to call (in NHS, and in his local Council etc.) if he had any difficulties and if he needed any meals brought to him, just to make the call.

How has Ryan Tubridy, who was working until last Wednesday, been tested and given results within a week when frontline health care workers are waiting up to two weeks for results?

    1. Cian

He was tested (live!) on the Late Late[1] on the 20 March.
He announced he was positive on 30 March (up to two weeks later).

If you watch the clip Cian, he said it was just a mock test and they would not be wasting time and resources by sending it to a lab for actual testing.

His brother is a neurologist in Vincents. Do you really think he’d parachute him ahead of a queue of his fellow health care workers? Yikes.

          1. some old queen

That might somewhat explain why the queues for psychopathy treatments are so long- he is a VERY busy public service person apparently.
