“A Period Of Weeks”

Minister for Health Simon Harris

This morning.

George Lee, of RTÉ, reports:

Minister for Health Simon Harris said he expects to be advised tomorrow to keep the significant restrictions to slow the spread of the coronavirus in place for a period of weeks but that Ireland will have to move onto a “different terrain” after that.

“What’s highly likely tomorrow is that the National Public Health Emergency Team will recommend that we continue with the very strict restrictions … I expect that to be a period of weeks,” Mr Harris said.

Harris expects Covid-19 restrictions to remain for ‘period of weeks’ (RTÉ)

“Different terrain”? Simon Harris telling the health experts what he wants to hear in a few weeks.

They’ll just do what the ECDC are telling them to do, as they have done all along. They are not leading, they are following. Nothing at all proactive in this country’s handling of this crisis.
ECDC are changing their advice with regard wearing of masks as well.

I hear ya on the switcheroo regarding face masks.

Yet at the same time, I don’t want our politicians “leading” or being proactive without guidance of medical experts… even if the experts haven’t been honest from the beginning on issues of masks.

“They’ll just do what the ECDC are telling them to do, as they have done all along.”

As they should. They’re politicians, not public health emergency experts. I’d rather they be guided by the NPHET than their own instincts or the pressure of a social media mob who scream for a lockdown while heading to their holiday homes with trailers full of bog roll.

The advice changes as new information about the virus comes to light. Isn’t it better that they react to new information rather then ignore it and carry on regardless?

They didn’t ‘lead’ when it came to stopping the St. Patrick’s Parade or closing the pubs. The ‘social media mob’ that you sneer at played a part in pressuring them in to that decision.

The biggest scandal of this whole thing has to be the advice given to nursing homes. Anyone with half a brain should have known that they needed to go into lock down as soon as CoVid-19 arrived on these shores.

But, the fact that it is so prevalent in those homes and not elsewhere would suggest that the amount of asymptomatic people is much higher than the predicted 50% figure.

In which case, in hindsight, this whole thing is going to look like a gross over reaction fuelled by a bunch of modelling nerds who got it badly wrong.
