Fine Gael and Fiánna Fail have signed a commitment to form a Government – 8 TDs short? Is SF so bad that they collectively think that Ireland is better served by any party but themselves? Ádh mhór to democracy.

        1. Rosette of Sirius

If only they could garner as much support in the Dail. Where it really matters at this time. Clearly nobody wants anything to do with them in there. Who could blame them?

          1. GiggidyGoo

Of course FFG don’t want SF to be in power – too many lids to be lifted on what FFG have been up to over the years.
But the inbreeding of FF and FG will only be good for democracy here, as now there is a clear distinction between government and opposition.
If the Greens, Labour and SDs enter with FFG, it’ll for for one of two reasons. Either a death wish, or a case of waiting for an early opportune moment to bring down the ‘new’ government. The Greens and Labour already have had their experiences of FFG. Maybe time for payback.

          2. MaryLou's ArmaLite

Most people don’t want SF IRA to be in power because a vote for SF/IRA is a vote for murder

          3. Rosette of Sirius

Regardless. Nobody, it seems, is prepared to do business with SF. Take out FF & FG and there’s a majority there that could form a government. So there’s a particular taint on SF and their IRA brethren that no matter how hard they try scrub it off, it remains unpalatable.

I see Trump has suspended US funding to the WHO over its handling of the Coronavirus, and being too close to China.

    1. ReproBertie

Trump, who accepts no responsibility for the US mishandling of the pandemic and gives his response to it a 10, is withholding funding as he says the WHO “must be held accountable”.

So the comment made by Eamonn Holmes is being accessed by Ofcom because of 419 complaints. All Eamonn said was that mainstream media could not possibly know if there was side effects to 5G and he is 100% correct- how could they?

Link below is of a lecture by Dr. Lennart Hardell is a professor in oncology and cancer epidemiology at the University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden.

No doubt someone will do a quick google and say his studies have been rebuked but the point is that are plenty of scientific opposition to the roll out of 5G. People who are way more knowledgeable on the subject than a bunch of journalists.

I would have thought that the current crisis would have brought into the sharp focus the need to maintain and upgrade our network infrastructure.

        1. Some old queen

Agreed but not one politician or representative of the telecoms industry will come out and say that the installation of 5G is essential work- because it is not.

          1. Some old queen

Adding bandwidth is not the same as installing 5G- very few if any even have 5G compatible devices at the moment.

            Try again.

          2. Rob_G

It would be some trick for everyone to have already bought 5G devices when there wasn’t any 5G yet.

“There is simply no evidence to support worrying about phones or masts when talking about cancer risk,” according to a guide by the Irish Cancer Society on the 5G health question.

“The changes to frequency used by technology such as 5G mean that these signals cannot even penetrate the human body. We know of no fundamental biophysical or biochemical mechanism for these signals to interact with important cellular functions.”

Brussels has radiation guidelines which are much more strict than any other city in Belgium. This has caused them problems when trying to get 4G up and running and these guidelines have been in place since long before 5G came along.

None of this means that Brussels would disagree with the Irish Cancer Society’s statement, no matter what anti-5G websites would have you believe.

AT PRESENT- but if there has not been any research done and it hasn’t been rolled out, where do they think the evidence would come from?

        1. Cian

          Catch-22:

          – You can’t roll out 5G until you have evidence that 5G roll-out is safe.
          – You can’t get evidence that 5G if safe until you roll-out 5G.

          ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

          1. Some old queen

Oh dear God- it’s like trying to teach a fish how to ride a bicycle.

5G research is perfectly doable without exposing the general public to these probable carcinogenics..I say probable because it will have its risk upgraded this year. Next step then will be a definite carcinogenic of course.

5G has not been rolled out in any part of Ireland because it requires stations at roughly 200- 300 meters apart- only a few mobile masts in city centers have it so far. https://www.speedtest.net/ookla-5g-map

Do you even understand what it is you are arguing for? At the very least go try educate yourselves before embarking on this reactionary nonsense.

          2. Cian (the other one)

If only there were multiple countries in the world, who would roll out 5g at different times…

          3. ReproBertie

“5G has not been rolled out in any part of Ireland ”

“5G is now here for anyone located in one of Ireland’s major population centres, albeit with the right contract and compatible phone. This comes after Vodafone Ireland announced this morning (13 August 2019) that is has launched the first commercial 5G service in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.”

          4. some old queen

The 5G service refers to mobile phone data only and that is very limited but, already there are issues with people putting their houses up for sale in the proximity.

You’ll know when 5G is really being rolled out because they’ll start felling the roadside trees- because for line of sight they’ll they have to.

Why are you even arguing about this if you can’t be bothered reading what the independent- meaning not in the telecom industry’s pocket- experts are saying?

          5. Matt Pilates

            Surely,

            — You can’t roll out FG until you have evidence that FG roll-out is safe.

          6. ReproBertie

“You’ll know when 5G is really being rolled out because they’ll start felling the roadside trees- because for line of sight they’ll they have to.”
You mean the super dangerous 5G rays can’t penetrate some leafy branches?

          7. some old queen

It’s like trying to have a conversation about discrete mathematics formula- with a goat.

            I give up.

          8. ReproBertie

“5G has not been rolled out in any part of Ireland” “The 5G service refers to mobile phone data only and that is very limited”

Look at this video of arguments that have been rebuked.

5G can’t penetrate leafy branches but apparently it might cause cancer.

I’d give up too if my arguments were so flimsy.

          9. some old queen

I am an electrical engineer with a degree in computer science and two h.dips- one of which is directly relevant in case anyone is interested.

One thing this subject is guaranteed to do is bring out the sneering morons, not one which would be bothered even watching that single lecture let alone go educate themselves of course.

I specifically picked Professor Lennart Hardell because along with Professor Rainer Nyberg they authored a document titled The 5G Appeal which was signed by 268 scientists and doctors. https://www.5gappeal.eu/the-5g-appeal/

      Are they all wrong? Really?

But even that is not the point. It is this wrong thing authoritarian mind set which will not tolerate dissent. Questioning why telecom companies may be using the cover of a lock down to install this non-essential for profit military grade technology is just not allowed.

      1. ReproBertie

“not one which would be bothered even watching that single lecture”

You dismissed Dr. Hardell in your post when you said “his studies have been rebuked” so what’s the point in wasting time watching the video?

“non-essential for profit military grade technology”
You post this gibberish while at the same time calling those who believe the science behind radio waves “sneering morons” who wouldn’t be bothered to go educate themselves. My car has an internal combustion engine. So do tanks. Is my car using “military grade technology”?

        1. Some old queen

Bertie if you are not going to even listen to what the most recognised scientist in the area of risk assessment of 5G is saying- what is the point eh?

Are you really so afraid of learning something?

In 2012, based on Hardell’s research, Italy’s supreme court ruled that a business executive’s brain tumor was caused by his cell phone use. Completely discredited is he?

          1. ReproBertie

“The most recognised scientist in the area of risk assessment of 5G” whose “studies have been rebuked”.

            Why bother indeed.

    1. Cian

There will probably be some splitters who’ll leave and create their own parties: Provisional Fianna Fail? Continuity Fine Gael?

    FF + FG = FFG
    FFG + SocDem + IND = FFG socks DEM-INDs
    SF + SocDem + PBP + IND = FFG socks DEM-all
New Taoiseach elected May 2020 + July emergency budget vote lost + August GE
= voters sock it to EM-all

Have some slightly brooding eye candy and marvel at that incredible cast. The new Villeneuve Dune adaptation is the first film I am absolutely determined to see in the cinema since Mad Max Fury Road. Isn’t out till December, mind. Something to look forward to.

If it’s a remake of David Lynch’s version it will likely be a complete failure.. or a deeply flawed waste of time at best.

However, if it’s based on the original genius by Alejandro Jodorowsky… All his hard work adapting the novel, script, treatment and his amazingly detailed artistic storyboard / graphic novel and notorious sci-fi blueprint… that was completely ripped off by everyone in film for years since.. including star wars btw.. then it has a decent chance at greatness…

I’m expecting it to be more likely the former and not the latter… or worse, somewhere in between.

You should watch this documentary about the full story, it’s a great entertaining and fascinating watch for anyone.

      1. Nigel

Between the Lynch and the Jodorowsky, it’s a tall order to do a Dune film, I hope it’s not a remake of either version, but it’s own thing based on the book. Villenuve has the chops for it, if anyone has.

        1. :-Joe

Ye, it’s a difficult story to film for anyone he may be the right one to do it, sci-fi experience, french connection.. who knows but hope it goes well?

Jodorowsky’s version was never made as the studio thought his original plan was too high risk a project.. then his extensive and detailed work was plagarised for years after. A terrible shame.. but apparently he’s over it.

It will be interesting to see if Villenuve will avoid the lowest common denominator studio bland and go for daring originality and something like what should have been already…

          A psychadelic-infused, epic, sci-fi masterpiece!..
          – I can’t help being deeply skeptical about it tho…

          :-J

          1. Nigel

Well, he managed well with Arrival, based on a fairly cerebral and complex story, and didn’t disgrace himself with the Blade Runner sequel. I’m afraid the time for psychedelia is long past, so I expect he’ll go for epic grandeur. The themes are as relevant as ever, and given how Game Of Thrones flubbed its ending, the story of a noble house betrayed and destroyed only to rise again done right might be fairly popular.

          2. :-Joe

            Late reply but…

A psychadelic angle is exactly what this film will need…
            – Haven’t you heard?.. Psychadelics are making huge leaps and bounds back into the mainstream… medicine, therapy, science research, spaced out introspection etc.

            :-J
