You have to laugh. The first two comments focus on the UK and Boris Johnson.
        It’s so predictable and tiresome.

Yeah sure who needs to be worried about anything here in Ireland when we have the Perfidious Albion bogeyman to complain about?

Just look at the so called “Irish” Daily Mail Andrew. They have a picture of Elton John, I don’t remember the last time they had an Irish picture on its front page. They also have a special with Hugh Fearley-Whittingstall (obviously he’s English I presume, never heard of him) Why can’t they support our own Irish instead of just copying the English version?

          1. Andrew

I don’t know Tommy and I don’t care. Their massive frontpage headline refers to an Irish story anyway. I don’t bristle at the very sight of an ‘English’ newspaper.

          1. Tommy Bohan

I think you miss my point! I have nothing whatsoever against the English. I just think we should have Irish papers that predominately have Irish content. All the regular UK papers are on sale here anyway e.g. Express, Guardian, etc But surely when you buy an Irish paper you expect most of it (not all of course) to be Irish, otherwise we have practically no Irish journalists!
And just one other point, the Mail sales figures in Ireland have collapsed in the last 2/3 years. Someone put some figures on broadsheet.ie yesterday showing sales of different papers. I couldn’t find them there now but I presume you can still find them. The Mail have slashed their employee levels in Ireland and sales have fallen big time as a result. That’s how I can’t fathom this tactics of putting so much English material on their front pages.

Irish Examiner – Covid-19 extra charge – E1 on a pint and E10 on a meal to help pubs and restaurant post C-19 crisis – suggestion by Central Bank economics professor Alan Ahearne

That will not go down well!

    1. Harry Robertson

Extra covid charge? that’ll go the same way as the USC, PRD/ASC and the various insurance levies put on over the years… ie a forever extra charge.

      1. Cian

No, USC was never brought in as a “temporary” tax it was introduced to replace the old “health levy” and the “income levy”.

    2. Otis Blue

Ha! They haven’t gone away you know!

Alan Ahearne, former FF Government Advisor, pretty much confirms why
Economics is considered the dismal science.

    3. GiggidyGoo

Especially as so many people will have become permanently unemployed, or have to take pay reductions. Aherne must be looking for a job in the ECB.

    4. george

10euros extra per meal? Alan Ahearne is paid too much.

That will deter people from eating out.

Joan Collins a few months ago:
“I really hope that people will spend more money on clothes, because nobody dresses up anymore,..Everybody’s going to end up in jeans and T-shirts, which I think is tragic”

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/joan-collins-says-wearing-jeans-and-t-shirts-is-tragic/ar-BBX0ZSX

And now look what they’ve reduced her to:-
:wearing a T-Shirt and what appears to be a pair of tracksuit bottoms (on the Metro cover).

That’s it for me. The final straw with this lockdown.

A team of experts have been drafted in to the hotel in Clonakilty Community Hospital. Were teams of experts drafted into all of the other various nursing homes around the country where the virus took hold?

  4. GiggidyGoo

Why are we being told that the testing backlog has been cleared when people are still waiting a week or more for their results?
As well, has Harris lost the plot completely? Open schools for a day a week? Yeah, sure, and all the kids will social distance?

  5. GiggidyGoo

    Well, well, well.
Checking the temperature of passenger arrivals is now being considered.
Passengers will now be interviewed upon arrival and asked to register where they will self isolate is another consideration.
Suddenly common sense begins to emerge.

Check all Brits for a start – FOUR times the deaths of the Northern Ireland Troubles and rising.

Can anyone tell me what the situation is with regard to PPE and private nursing homes? As we know the fees these homes charge are fairly hefty. My question is, why aren’t they providing this PPE for themselves? Or at least are they paying for PPE they receive from the HSE?

        1. Cian

If you look at that article there are 2300 beds in the 18 hospitals with a combined turnover of about €1.2bn (a lot of the figures were 2018 and some were missing, but if we assume an average of €550,000 per bed) .

This would suggest a monthly turnover of €103m – so the State is paying over the odd if the €115m is correct.

      Two questions on nursing homes.

      1. What is the breakdown between private and public nursing homes?

      2. What is the CoVid-19 infections breakdown between private and public nursing homes?

  7. :-Joe

Suddenly!.. After oh-so many weeks, now the government has decided to prioritise a key demogrophic of the most vunerable whose mortality has been made even more precarious by just being in a nursing home. without basic proper safety procedures in place to protect them.

The F-f/g undemocratically elected duopoly for the neo-liberal economic elite… is now implementing various measures, way after the fact that it was a priority as one of the first areas that required targeting from the start. It is more proof it does not even care about it’s own core voter base. The elderly and previously mentally confused, coerced and conditioned by propaganda into supprting them for the last century.

It’s a shameful disgrace or the highest order and worse still, at least 50% of the voters and a significant amount who are these victims or related, will continue the self-sabotage against their and our own best interest as any kind of attempt at a functioning democratic republic….

You can dismiss this as more of the same anti F-f/g – rhetoric but just look at the facts.

NO SINGLE MENTION OF HEALTHCARE OR HOUSING IN THE F-F/G TERMS FOR FORMING A NEW GOVERNMENT

Yet again, another GLARINGLY OBVIOUS EXAMPLE of what a F***ing joke omnishambles this country really is underneath it all…. – I don’t care how well you think we’re doing compared to other countries because you’ve heard the news and seen the stats from the data… It’s all flawed, inaccurate and most of it is misleading at the moment… Apart from the dead bodies, obviously.

& Thanks to simple, narrow minded and binary polemic only thinking f’ing eejits out there..
    – I’m not a SF or any other party political supporter either so don’t bore me with your stupified subconsciously pre-programmed impulsive need to defend the indefensible because your brain cannot comprehend any other alternative option.

Advising that those homes to reopen was criminal negligence. Not providing PPE to those working with the most vulnerable in our society was reckless endangerment- I cannot see how any sane person could view it as anything else.

A long line of coffins will be Harris’s legacy.

The 60 bed nursing home near to me is virus free. The owner visited every patient with either a bouquet of flowers or chocolates over Easter. She nightly calls to every patient and drowns them in holy water…..Bless her cotton socks, a kind lady.
