The move effectively achieves a long-term Trump policy goal to curb immigration, making use of the health and economic crisis that has swept the country as a result of the pandemic to do so.
The decision drew swift condemnation from some Democrats, who accused the president of creating a distraction from what they view as a slow and faulty response to the coronavirus.
Trump said he was taking the action to protect the U.S. workforce. Millions of Americans are suffering unemployment after companies shed employees amid nationwide lockdowns to stop the contagion.
“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States,” Trump said in a tweet.
The White House declined to offer further details about the reasoning behind the decision, its timing, or its legal basis.

clamps, the australians did it very early on to good effect and have suffered fewer fatalities than most nations. you could argue that they were pandemic prepared from very early on, notwithstanding their willingness to close their borders at every hand’s turn to immigration previously to covid 19.
trump though is blatently covering his arse by playing the populist card. it’s a shameless politcal ploy to distract from his own incompetence rather than a genuine attempt to protect american citizens. if he was consistant in trying to stop the spread he would restrict domestic as well as international flights like the australians did. but he won’t because he’s a liar and a charlatan.

I’m not sure I understand what feezing immigration accomplishes that isn’t already, or better, accomplished by travel bans? Immigrants are only a subset of all travellers, surely. Plus immigrants aren’t the problem in the US – it’s the complete lack of a co-ordinated Feseral response and the head of state routinely undermining and contradicting efforts to control the pandemic. If reports are correct, the Feds are fecking hijacking medical equipment purchased by the states?

The stable doors still need closing, and this is one door of a number needing closing. Regardless of motivation it is clearly one of the right things to do.
don’t want to harp on about it clamps, but stopping immigration on its own is not a health issue unless it’s part of a suite of measures. on it’s own, well it becomes a very different thing altogether.
I don’t think you can really properly judge this without understanding the motivation, especially since a) immigration to the US has already been effectively suspended and b) Trump keeps pushing for an early re-opening of those stable doors. On the other hand, Trump has apparently spent the last few days focused on, er, stabilising oil prices…

100% – Ireland (the island) needs to force all arrivals into 2 weeks quarantine, courtesy of the state. It is expensive and it is harsh but it works. Australia has 72 deaths. In Victoria, they did 2,700 tests on Monday and found one positive case. Fewer than 50 new cases per day. Some states have had zero new cases for three days in a row. Some of the states have closed their borders – never happened before. It has worked. I think Ireland needs to take this step. Anything less is just going to draw it out.
No, not courtesy of the state, should be at the expense of the quarantined. China does this. Travel there now and you pay to be locked in a hotel room for 2 weeks.

Covid-19 is whipping us but the HSE chooses to view Nursing home fatalities as some sort of other bin.
They deluded themselves with their controlled stats that don’t factor nursing homes but they won’t say as much.
We had months of heads up on this, Protection of nursing homes and the elderly should have been priorities but somehow were not.
