This afternoon.
Cork Street, Dublin.
Intreo Empoyment and Incomes Support office. It has been reported that 68,000 people have been turned down for the emergency Covid-19 pandemic unemployment benefit payments. Some have been left with no support for more than a month.
Reasons for refusal include that applicant may ‘already be on jobseeker’s allowance, they were not working immediately prior to the lockdown or had provided incorrect PPS or bank account numbers’.

The free money is running out. Covie honeymoon period is definitely over.
A honeymoon period? Some of us have buried family members but yeah, it’s a holiday.
Yes, you’re very clever.
No, it’s because they were unemployed prior to the lockdown (and on relevant support payment already), so not entitled to the pandemic payment or they have provided wrong details…
This story is all over the place.
+1
The way the piece is written one might at first think that “some” people is 68,000. But it is “some” of the 68,000.
A malevolent state grinding its citizens down.
What a genuinely thick response.
“Reasons for refusal include that applicant may ‘already be on jobseeker’s allowance, they were not working immediately prior to the lockdown or had provided incorrect PPS or bank account numbers’.”
– how is the malevolent state’s fault that someone is already on a competing welfare payment, or failed to supply the correct details?
Yet the hard left parties are not moaning about covid payments. Why? Likely because they recognise it is a very reasonable to generous emergency payment measure.
But yeah… “grinding down” or whatever
The way the govt handled this, by govt I mean the welfare dept, it is definitely something in all this they got very much right.
If only there was some, some sort of card, where all of the this information were readily-accessible…
Was thinking same.
many would be recently arrived language students with no work experience
Backlog also in large part to online applications being processed in ‘back office’ in Mayo.
What backlog?
I call cow poo on that. Applications are being processed all over the country, in all parts of it, from offices (and homes) everywhere. There are thousands of staff of the DEASP working on these payments, and largely getting it right.
