As for the Star’s joyous Spoons announcement. UK, second biggest C19 mortality count in Europe, soon to be leading the pack.

Surprised they didn’t have a name the baby competition – Boji MacBojface, etc.

      “British Intelligence”

      This stuff is appalling.

Johnson is a piece of work all the same. He’s been missing for most of the corona crisis and when he comes back he gets an excuse to disappear again…

Now when the questions are asked, he’ll pass it off on Raab and the rest of the scientists.

“Just look at how the whole disinfectant thing was reported.”…
Yeah right, these were his words..

“A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposedly we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. (To Bryan) And I think you said you’re going to test that, too. Sounds interesting, right?”
“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute. That’s pretty powerful.”. D Trump

The man is a dangerous idiot and I’m not sure why you would support him.

      1. Clampers Outside

Yes, let’s look at his words…

        On the ‘light’ :

“supposedly”… “that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it”…. “you said you’re going to test that”…

        On the ‘disinfectant’ :

…. “it’d be interesting to check that… you’re going to use medical doctors”…

Yes, the man is an idiot. But truth be told and as much as people don’t like the truth, he presented an hypothesis, a daft one, but that’s all he did, present a daft hypothesis.

But the media presented that as Trump said people should “inject bleach and stick uv lights up our bung hole”.

        1. Nigel

He’s the man in charge of the richest most powerful country in thre world and he’s in front of the press babblng nonsense he doesn’t understood and then having a hissy fit when his words get reported, why the feck does he deserve any leeway and why the hell shouldn’t he be mocked and scorned for it? If Hilary said something like that you wouldn’t be anywhere near as forgiving. Feck it Simon Harris said something fractionally as stupid and I doubt you’d be inclined to ever let him forget it.

          1. Clampers Outside

I just mocked and scorned what he actuay said, and commented for their being no need to make up what he said.
Are you really that blinded by your own hate that you have to go off on one and not see that.

            There’s a mocking term for that… TDS.

        2. Nigel

You downplayed it as ‘just a daft hypothesis’ and not as the massively embarrasing and potentially dangerous nonsense of someone who should never have been put in a position of such power. The real TDS is in those who don’t find this horrifying.

      2. SOQ

‘disinfectant’ (dis-infect) is a term used in phototherapy, it does not mean a physical cleaner- the sun can act as a ‘disinfectant’. It is already being used as a surface DISINFECTANT against CoVid-19- which is why the question.

This is the theory of it- https://www.bioworld.com/articles/434719-uv-light-respiratory-catheter-for-covid-19-from-cedars-sinai-seeking-emergency-use

It is looking promising for testing too- https://www.photonics.com/Splash.aspx?Tag=coronavirus&Type=ART

    2. Nigel

Seriously feck off. Trump didn’t refer to a promising treatement he referred to a bloody game changing miracle cure, but now the mean people who criticised him for his astonishing irresponsibility are letting people die out of spite. What unmitigated tosh. What utter, inexcusable, lazy, stupid, half-arsed nonsense. He was not ‘right’ about disinfectant and UV light he was babbling nonsense nonsensically that his supporters have had to contort into gordian knots to make it look like the libs are being mean to him. Good God this lockdown is eating your brain.

        1. Nigel

Obviously you should go run it through Google Translate For Trump Apologists until its syntax is broken and vocabulary has been infantilised, then you’ll understand it.

        2. Nigel

Clampers I love how you self own when ducking out of conversations by admitting you’re too stupid to understand what others are saying.

        3. Nigel

Not you, I hate to break it to you. But you can keep pretending you did for your own satisfaction.

    3. Rosette of Sirius

UV germicidal lamps – that use UVC light – have been used to clean/disinfect rooms in hospitals and surgical equipment, Also used to deeper clean hotel rooms, our drinking water and the scissors and blades in barbers and salons for an awful long time. You can even buy one for yourself for your home. There are some risks of course – leaving them on too long converts O2 molecules to ozone and that’s pretty harmful stuff. That on top of the light itself being carcinogenic of course.

So, my point is, UVC lamps are useful and already used to disinfect empty rooms in hospital. UVC light is dangerous to humans. UV was used to some effect on skin related issues over 100 years ago and today UVA light is still used today to treat skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo and a type of skin cancer called T-cell lymphoma.

While General Trumpton did delve into the nuances of UV, he set a bunch of folks out into the wilds to buy UVC lamps. This is frankly dangerous – akin to his words around injecting disinfectant into lungs words.

I honestly don’t really care when he delves into the realms of science fiction with any form of crazy cure nonsense.

The devil is in the detail and he does not do detail. His words are powerful, people listen and will do stupid things because of them. He’s irresponsible and only interested in one thing. His re-election. He will say and do anything to help it. All I say is God help us because he has it in him to destabilize the planet – much more so than it already is – to get his way. That’s my opinion anyways.

      1. ReproBertie

Trump’s remarks followed a speaker who spoke about the success they had seen killing the virus on surfaces. He decided to think out loud about injecting disinfectant while being broadcast to the entire USA and his apologists don’t seem to get how that is irresponsible. He’s human and he occasionally does dumb things and the world won’t end if people admit that.

        1. Nigel

‘Occasionally?’ He says dumb things so routinely that it takes something as outrageous as speculating about internally adminstering disinfectant and UV light in humans to actually stick out.

      2. Clampers Outside

        Thanks for this post.

I learnt something that you probably hadn’t intended.

I have been of the misfortune to have just recently developed an eczema condition which my doc prescribed a cortisone for which is working, somewhat, the past two weeks.
A friend said the summer sun should help it, and I see you mentioning uva is good for it.

I’ve never had alergies or issues related to alergies up until now, and this is all new to me, and all info is new help, so, thanks for that unintended tip :)

        1. millie in quarantine

Take a dip in the sea as often as you can, Clamps. There is nothing like seawater for clearing up eczema. It’ll sting like bejaysus but well worth it.

        2. SOQ

Same as yourself Clamps and after many visits to a dermatologist I came to the conclusion that the only thing which worked was to burn it out- meaning sunbeds.

Mentioned it to the dermatologist and he said they were unregulated but that some were safe so, I asked how would I know?

His answer was pretty common sense actually- the more expensive per minute, the better they are likely to be. It is the only thing which actually works for me although I do look like a bit of a poser at times.

Oh and be careful of antihistamines, I gain a minimum of 3 ibs a week on those things- which drops at the same rate upon stopping.

          1. Clampers Outside

Thanks for the sunbed tip SOQ. I’ll keep that for a last resort.

I tried antihistamines at the start to no effect, unfortunately.

Also, e45 lotion, and epoderm… again with little to no effect.

It was then I took pics and emailed my doc (nearly 3 wks ago, during lockdown), who phoned back and asked a few questions and prescribed a cortisone.

I’m certainly in a far better place than 3 weeks ago, but still ‘patchy’ in places.

            Thanks again for the tips!

        3. Rosette of Sirius

Never had the misfortune for eczema tho friend and family have. in the two cases I know of, none of the prescribed creams ever really worked. However, both my sister and a friend went for one of those allergy tests and both – it appears – had an allergy to gluten. Yeah, I know, stinks of woo to me also…. I should know better. Anyways. The gave it up and within weeks the eczema went away…. flaring up again after the odd late night kebab or pizza or whatever.
Anyways, it’s all anecdotal this and perhaps coincidental too. I’m very skeptical about this sort of thing but for them, they got results.

          1. SOQ

Yes certain foods will trigger it and some will calm it down. The body is not a set of components, it is all connected and increasingly- gut health stuff is coming into play with skin conditions.

          2. millie in quarantine

The thing about a lot of the creams prescribed for eczema is that they contain a steroids of varying degrees of strength. Prolonged usage weakens the skin, in that it thins the dermal layers and makes it more prone to infection.

Flare ups of eczema can be caused by a huge number of things, including allergy, diet, air quality, and even stress. It’s an awful thing to have.

          3. Clampers Outside

I hope it doesn’t come to that. I’ve ways been able to eat whatever is in front of me :)

Thanks again tho, I’ll keep it in mind.

Elsewhere, Ireland signs letter to European Commission calling for airlines to be allowed refund passengers with vouchers.
    Really?
    A voucher isn’t a refund.
The rules are clear, and the airlines are riding roughshod over customers rights. – with the blessing of the State.
Ryanair are saying that customers won’t get refunded until the virus situation is ‘over’
BA have laid off 12,000 staff. BA and Aer Lingus are owned by the same company. Say one of them goes bust – what use are vouchers then?

    1. Rob_G

So, you are worried about airlines going bust, but at the same time, you want them to pay out all of their cash reserves in one go at a time when they have zero revenue coming in?

      1. GiggidyGoo

I’m not worried about an airline going bust. I’m worried about people whose cash is being held onto illegally by the airlines carrying the can.

I question the status of vouchers should an airline go bust, and you remark on their ‘reserves’ Those ‘reserves’ aren’t actually property of the Airlines as, by law, they have to refund. Reserves are built up by getting paid for services which have been provided for instance. It ain’t their money Rob. (Apt name, if you think it is)

Would an airline allow its customers to give them vouchers when they’re making the booking?

        1. Rob_G

I’m not worried about an airline going bust. I’m worried about people whose cash is being held onto illegally by the airlines carrying the can.”

If an airline goes bust, customers won’t get cash, nor vouchers – they will be at the back of the queue along with the other unsecured creditors. It’s not ideal, but these are exceptional times, so I imagine that the government is trying to help our airlines keep some degree of liquidity by bending the rules on refunds a bit to keep the airlines afloat for a couple of months.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Quite Rob. yes, ‘if an airline goes bust, customers won’t get cash, nor vouchers – they will be at the back of the queue along with the other unsecured creditors.’
So the customers’ cash is in the bank of the Airlines. The law says that they must refund. Let the airlines adhere to the law and refund, and use their normal ‘reserves’ to ride out the storm.
            They haven’t supplied the service.
Hopefully the Credit Card companies adhere to their ‘chargeback’ facilities.

In the meantime, people who condone robbing people with a mealy mouthed excuse need a long hard look at themselves. That’s you Rob.

        2. Rosette of Sirius

Sometimes folks forget that we live on an island. A small one at that. When the dust settles and we’re allowed to travel, we will be utterly depended on air to travel. Not sea. Air. Allowing Ryanair and Aer Lingus to go tats up because of a principle is daft.

And to your last point, yes. They do. Sorta. I booked flights using Avios. I also got them refunded when I had to cancel.

  4. Kingfisher

And ‘traffic’ now has a K at the end. Truly we are living in the end of times. By the way, why is no one reporting on the bird flu in Monaghan? Half a million laying hens culled, farmers presumably bankrupted; last time bird flu was a thing there was absolute hysteria about the danger of a viral crossover into human populations.

  5. Tommy Bohan

I wonder what British photo the “Irish” Daily Mail will have on their front page tomorrow!!!!

  6. GiggidyGoo

    Article 1.
The Irish nation hereby affirms its inalienable, indefeasible, and sovereign right to choose its own form of Government, to determine its relations with other nations, and to develop its life, political, economic and cultural, in accordance with its own genius and traditions.
    =====================

What d f are you on about?

      1. GiggidyGoo

Article 1 doesn’t refer to treason.
        Article 39 Does though.
Article 39 states that “Treason shall consist only in levying war against the State, or attempting by force of arms or other violent means to overthrow the organs of government established by this Constitution.”

        1. Cian

Not quite. In full it is:
“Treason shall consist only in levying war against the State, or assisting any State or person or inciting or conspiring with any person to levy war against the State, or attempting by force of arms or other violent means to overthrow the organs of government established by this Constitution, or taking part or being concerned in or inciting or conspiring with any person to make or to take part or be concerned in any such attempt.”
