Health Minister Simon Harris confirmed that 164 people living in Direct Provision have tested positive for Covid-19.
He also told the Dáil that 160 healthcare workers live in Direct Provision centres across Ireland.
At last night’s press briefing with the Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health Dr Tony Holohan, journalists were told that, as of midnight last Saturday, there were 88 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Direct Provision centres.
Meanwhile…
And only 15% of all Direct Provision residents (1300/7700) have been tested, because HSE will only do full testing of a centre if a cluster is suspected, it confirmed yesterday. So we still don’t know what the real numbers of #COVID19 cases are in Direct Provision.

So, almost a 100% increase in what, 4 days?
Whilst correct this kind of statement is also meaningless. For it to mean something the increase needs backing up with additional data for instance
How many tests had been done in DP centres as of 30th April
How many test results were available for DP centres as of 30th April
How many tests had been done in DP centres as of 6th May
How many test results were available for DP centres as of 6th May
For example,
If the 88 confirmed cases on Saturday were from 3000 tests it’s a 0.03% rate
If the 164 cases mentioned today was from 3500 tests it’s a 0.045% rate
If the 164 cases mentioned today was from 4000 tests it’s a 0.04% rate
Big difference between 100% and 0.01%, depending how dramatic you want to be.
The test rate is unknown as you say. That information hasn’t been given, so can’t be analyzed. the only actual figures given are the ones that suggest an increase of almost 100% increase in those four days.
The number of tests and when they taken may produce a different subject to write about.
Its absolutely not right to keep people involuntarily locked up in a situation with a virus could be spreading. Could the Irish government not offer to return the people in Direct Provision to their home countries, via a free flight? That would seem an obvious way to get them out of being trapped in their current accommodation.
Because otherwise I’m not sure where exactly those 7700 people expect to be housed, given we already have 10,000 homeless Irish people and a national housing crisis, along with the biggest economic crisis in Irish history about to kick off.
