Leo Varadkar tells the Dáil that it is very possible #Covid19ireland was present in Ireland last year, or at least in January, and it should not be presumed that it came here directly from China or from Italy.
This in reference to France retro-confirming some cases in December

This afternoon.
More as we get it.
Meanwhile…
‘I would rather have a plan that we accelerate if things go well, than one we might have to pause, or draw out, or go back on, if they don’t’ – Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says the Government does not want to have to reimpose restrictions | Follow live updates: https://t.co/eIjTNYtRQC pic.twitter.com/nhEB8iwaEl

so it was present in the community – left to own devices for months without any lockdown, any social distancing
and the sky didn’t fall in?
hmm
In fairness BB the sky probably fell in on the families of those who later died on account of this early spread (before the days of testing and daily death totals)
And that’d be before awareness of it and the consequences of it.
WHO were still saying it, covid, had not moved to humans on Jan 14th.
Hmmmm.. in Sweden c.3% of deaths (100 people) are aged 50-60, under that is negligible.. even aged 60-70 accounts for c.8% of deaths. It’s a plague on people over aged 80. I’m not saying we weren’t right to close down till we got to grips with this new bug.. 50% of people in Ireland who end up in ICU have serious heart conditions.. we should maybe start to re-access who should be cocooning..
So he did know before running off to the Áras
‘definately explains his bringing back Concannible as a priority

Interesting the amount of people recalling that they or someone they new had severe flu-like symptoms around December/January in that Gavin O’Reilly Twitter thread . I remember that also happening to me just after Christmas. Included a severe sore throat. Don’t generally suffer from flu. About 15 years since I had something that bad.
+1 Was hearing similar stories weeks ago, before lockdown even.
