Interesting to see the German outlet, Das Bild (Europe’s biggest selling newspaper) letting a number of German public intellectuals air an alternative point of view on the lockdown. The title of the article is “Lockdown war ein Riesen-Fehler“ (“The Lockdown was a Huge Mistake”).

Hard to imagine the likes of the Irish Times doing something similar – how many would be even willing to speak out? Any “Emperor’s New Clothes” moment seems like a distant dream ;)

That is not what they say. Their view is the lockdown went too far and the cure did more damage than the disease.

Nobody was to know this back in February/March, but with the Imperial College London’s modelling software being of such poor quality and the approach taken by Sweden resulting in similar outcome to ourselves, there is an argument to be made, and nobody in the Irish Media is making it.

Sweden are including care home deaths in the stats. They have said half of all deaths were in care homes and 90% of deaths are over the age of 70.

They have a higher death rate than us and a death rate much higher than their neighbors.

well, some lads have always been willing to push the envelope when it comes to the philosophical questions around life and death (and airing of same)…given the majority have at least a moral compass installed and are capable of sound critical thought I myself have enough foolish confidence to tolerate that tour of the darker side. it’s healthy. the trick is to recognise if it’s being weaponised in some way e.g.

our thinking around economics and capitalism is being really tested right now and it will be interesting to see where it all ends up. my own belief is that there is only one realistic outcome – we will simply end up doing whatever the banks tell us to do

@f_lawless- Can you imagine the Irish Times inviting a former contributor, John Waters, to write a dissenting piece along those lines? or the Sunday Independent welcoming a piece from its former investigative contributor, dear Gemma?

I have doubts about Das Bild. It has carried some useful exposes now and again, but its cultural demeanor is like so many tabloids.

Sure David Quinn writes for the Irish Times and he’s moaning away about it predictably enough.

Imagine allowing yourself to get wound up at the idea of other people enjoying themselves…

Of course it was going to be cancelled. There are a lot of people who worked on it who have lost out due to the cancellation of this and every other festival. Small businesses who service events will close and people will be unemployed. You seem happy though, why?

Don’t worry Lily. Ireland wll pretend and extend, as it always does. We’re different aparently.

Re the Telegraph, why does it have to be “BRITISH common sense”? Why not just “common sense”? Why do they have to always be so jingoistic?

    1. V'ness

They’re just getting a dig in

like if the Brits had any common sense at all
they wouldn’t have elected Bojarred in the first place
