James Reilly former Health Minister around 2.20?
Maura O’Connell, Leslie In Tua Nua and Mary Black??
yea, leslie dowdall and mary black – you’d be hard pushed to choose between the two if it came to it. i’ve a feeling that leslie might have been gamey enough that you wouldn’t have to choose… not sure about mary though. although most women have a vague fantasy about that i.m.e.
Going to show my age now, but I used to drink in a pub in Courtown called Dolores Lynch’s which, as far as I remember, Joe O’Reilly or his family bought and Mark Black worked there with Joe. Very nice people they were. They had music 7 nights a week with a fellow called Ollie (as far as I remember) playing a Farfisa organ. and getting up singers (who were basically all dubs).
The pub was then sold to another fellow from Dublin who renamed is the Wheeltappers Inn. And he put up one of these plastic signs over the front door with a picture of a wheel and a big fish superimposed over it. We reckoned that the accent wasn’t understood by the sign maker, and he thought it was the Whaletappers Inn.
There’s my Old Man and the Sea moment for today – back to normal complaining tomorrow.
Think Joe O’Reilly renamed the pub to Fluthers
the b-side to that was ronnie drew doing a spoken word version of Jem – quite brilliant:

In your face Dickie Rock!
First though that crossed my mind too.
Anyone still got the milk bottles lying around?
No. But I still have the hair
…I know a Dublin Millenium milk bottle went into a time capsule along with a cutting from the letter page in the Irish Times about an overheard conversation between two girls sheltering from a downpour in a shop doorway in O’Connell where one swore it was ‘the last bleedin’ millenium she was going to…’
Oh God! Cringe overload! Ha ha, its truly an awful song they churned out. Ah the 80’s in Ireland, a fuppin mess
could use some Bono
is there anything to be said for a bit of chris de burgh?
…the head?
The monobrow?
more the toxic ladypart-iness.
It wasn’t too bad actually if you were a middle class atheist Dub like myself.
Did Ronnie Drew tap into the same technique as the Mongolian throat singers use? I was just struck at the similarities in that video
ronnie drew was apparently top of the class in school on eblana avenue in dun laoghaire – and was lined up for an apprenticeship in a local insurance company [height of achievement in what’s now CBC monkstown – ahem, bodger]. over the easter holidays in hos last year, ronnie headed off to spain with a pal – and stayed there for the next 18 months. ended up in seville (teaching english) where he learned to play the spanish guitar and sing flamenco – that’s where the singing style and the unusual (in irish trad circles) guitar style came from
true story: he told me himself
…saw Ronnie’s son just before the lockdown…once singing and once acting and thought he was pretty damn good…
I have a brief tale about Ronnie Drew too: Back in 2002, I once witnessed the poor man get stage fright right in front of me. We were in the jacks of Mulligan’s bar, Amsterdam both facing the communal urinal, as you do. People kept coming up behind him slapping him on the back as he’d just finished doing a gig there – at which point he said “I can’t go here” and locked himself in the cubicle..
Who is the chiseller standing beside Ronnie Drew in the video, I seem to remember him being on Dempseys Den maybe, he had notions of singing old Dublin songs or something like that?
Haven’t seen the video, but the name George Murphy rings a bell?
Good memory there Paulus, that’s the lad I was thinking of
It’s not him though, George Murphy, contestant on You’re a Star in 2003, was born in 1986ish. Apparently working on his singing career again with band the Rising Sons, listened to some of their work, not bad at all.

He learned a thing or two from listening to Luke Kelly it seems, a voice of strength and impact, I wish him well and will try to make a gig.

Ronnie Drew’s voice fairly cuts through the mix.
I agree, the timbre of his voice is distinctive, especially in contrast to yer man with the dark hair singing the high notes at the end – who is he?
There were a lot of people taking themselves way too seriously in that video but it was nice to see Dublin as it was back when I left it, because they’ve a right mess of it now :-(
