No New Covid Deaths

at

This evening.

Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health Dr Tony Holohon told the nightly press briefing that no new Covid-19 deaths have been recorded.

He said 59 more Covid-19 cases have been diagnosed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 24,698.

Meanwhile, asked about businesses calling for the two-metre social distance rule to be reduce to one metre, Dr Holohan said:

“It is not a magic thing on its own. The measure of two metres does not mean that everything is safe outside of two metres and everything less than two metres is less safe. It’s a risk.

“So that if the average distance between people is one metre, the risk of transmission of infection of this kind is greater than if it’s two metres and greater than if it’s four metres and so on.

“And we think, for the moment, two metres is a reasonable compromise given where we are. But that’s something we’ll keep under constant review and I understand the position that businesses will have articulated in relation to some of those kinds of measures.”

Dr Holohon also told journalists referred to the results of a Department of Health survey “hot off the presses”.

Participants were asked “On balance, do you think Ireland is trying to return to normal either too quickly, a bit too quickly, at about the right pace or a bit too slowly or much too slowly?”

Dr Holohon said the survey’s results show more than half of participants (56%) believe that it is being done “at about the right pace” and another 24% believe it’s being done “too quickly or much too quickly”.

He said:

“That shows the majority of people are cautious. This is where the public is at. And so I understand completely why people who have responsibility, if you like, for sectors, or people who are in advocacy positions in relation to particular parts of the economy and society would fell that we need to be moving on more quickly. But this is giving us a sense of where…so we can open certain escorts in the morning for example.

“But we also have to reflect on are the public going to feel that this is the right time in terms of going to feel sufficiently reassured to feel that it’s time to use a particular service if they don’t perceive that the risk for that service had been addressed sufficiently.

I think it’s too soon to back slap per head of population we are number eight
USA is number nine but UK number three
      Belgium number one
      But well done

    Tony and Leo say:

Stay at two metres, except if you are Leo, if you are in a working class area or appear to be lower social demographic you will be branded a COVIDIOT but if you are Leo + Co then its recreational time/ entitled to private life. You can also work in several care homes, and not be tested, despite being on the minimum wage and working with the main cohort of our population who produce the deaths that give us the reason to close down the country. Oh yeah we are not testing to what we said we would but thats cool cos nobody has asked what with Leo and the boys in the park… We must also get people to forget the police were moving people on from sitting in parks last week but thats cool now. The two metre thing is our Irish decision though – the rest of the world is grand with one metre but we will be the outliers. Lucky for us nobody has asked about the private hospitals except for the pesky Sinn Feiners but they can’t stop us getting back into Govt now so we don’t need to worry.

I hear ya on much of that, but…

What exactly was it you see that was wrong with Leo being in the park.
      Do tell…

Clamper Outside I’m sure you have seen this but in case you haven’t.

“Outdoor spaces and tourism sites, including car parks beaches and trails will be opened, where people can move around freely and where social distancing can be maintained. If you’re visiting a public amenity, try not to stay too long at the site or have picnics. Please do your exercise and then go home.”

Deputy Assistant Secretary General at the Department of Taoiseach, Elizabeth Canavan May 18th

So, its one rule for Leo and one for everyone else evidently (even with the I’m living in the Stewards Cottage argument). He tries to be a man of the people but fails to grasp the social mores or read the cues but thats what you get when you are governed by your own civil servants.

        1. Clampers Outside

“Try not to stay to long at the site or have picnics”

How long were they there? I dunno, neither do you.

How long is “too long”? I dunno, do you?

We’re they having a “picnic”? No.

If there was ‘one rule for him, another for others’, why was he surrounded by groups doing what he was doing?

This whole thing is a nothing burger.

      1. Who am I now

it’s deaths reported per day buddy
obviously Kate’s friend will show up in the numbers tomorrow
        RIP Kate’s friend

          1. Who am I now

Yea what they always say is that the number of deaths they give out on a given day are the number ‘reported’ to them, in other words there is always or may always be a lag between someone dying and then it shows up in the stats.

          2. Cian

            Yes, reported.
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre must be informed of Notifiable diseases. They, in turn, report on the numbers each day.

What I find pathetic is the amount of social key board warriors always trying to turn this into a political issue. People were dying and still will be. Yet where were the leaders? Apparently you guys no more than the medical professionals from reading on-line unproven articles. Who does that remind you of – Trump, gemma, dee (hire a protest) and other ding bats.

    1. SOQ

Why do you assume people will continue to die from this virus?

From what I can gather, the virus group known as corona usually sweep the globe every year and then poof- they are gone- there is no evidence to suggest that this one is any different.

That is not to say it is not serious because to some it obviously is but when people make sweeping statements, especially in MSM, contradicting what at this stage is accepted science, I really have to wonder why.

So going forward- lets start by insisting that every predictive model is peer reviewed. If you cannot document your model and then allow others build it- you are blowing smoke out of your backside.

        1. Ringsend Incinerator

We can’t. It’s the elephant in the room. Accusations of body shaming will fly from the elephant.

      1. Cian

        @SOQ
Why do you assume people will continue to die from this virus?
seriously. Because there have been thousands of deaths to date? And millions of cases of people infected. And there is a well studied causation of infection –> death. If the numbers of people infected today is non-zero; then the number of deaths in the future will be non-zero.

What do you think SOQ? Why do you assume people will NOT continue to die from this virus?

        1. Who am I now

why do you bother replying to that guy? why do you assume he will ever change?

        2. SOQ

@Cian- if it behaves as you say then it is acting differently to most other corona viruses- which is entirely possible of course but unlikely- unless it has been modified of course which is a another story altogether.

We don’t even know what percentage of the population are immune to it now whiter through previous infection or natural defenses but it’s not the first virus of its kind and it certainly will not be the last. Yes the fatalities are higher but for most of us with no under lying conditions- just like near all the rest- it is at best an inconvenience for a couple of weeks.

The main difference this time around has been our reaction to it and in particular that of the media. They have engaged in full on fear porn and where people’s health is concerned, that proved to be a very effective control mechanism. The problem now is, how to get people back to normal- not a new normal- just normal.

          1. Cian

Tell you what – let’s wait until tomorrow.

If there has been at least one more COVID death (worldwide) then I am right.
If there are no more deaths – you were right – and I’ll apologise. okay?

    2. Johnnythree

A PERSON: What I find pathetic is the amount of social key board warriors always trying to turn this into a political issue’

If you don’t think this is a political issue I really suggest you take your head out of the sand. Instead maybe ask yourself ‘How is this not a political issue’? You are thinking exactly as the Govt want. Well done. Having an opinion that is open, critical and informed does not equate any body to ding bats but hey, if you see everything as black OR white then go ahead. Why do you think we have more people dead in care homes than nearly any other country? Do you even think about that on a granular level? For example: Why are people in care homes? Why are so many care homes not up to standard? What is HIQUA for? Why can’t people be incentivised to care for the elderly at home? Why does the Govt not put in infection control in February into care homes given that it was international best practice? As yourself those questions then ask if its not a political issue. Do you just go to the polling booth and decide when they hand you the ballot?

I pity the signer behind him trying to interpret this kind of BS.

    Worth noting…

The WHO recommended distance is “1m at least” apparently, as does the ECDC. And different countries in Europe use different distances of 1 or 1.5 or 2m.

Can’t help but notice that this is the one thread that Charger isn’t spamming…

I’m surprised with the survey results – I wonder when the question was asked.

My own “survey” (albeit 100% unscientific and only based on talking to friends, colleagues and family since about Friday) is the return to normal is happening a bit too slowly.
