The Daily Star on Brian May… surprised they missed the Sheer Heart Attack angle.

    Get well soon Brian!

“An ugly power grab”, “ongoing unforgivable waste of taxpayers money” -strong reaction to RTE Fergus Bowers false reporting of private hospital occupancy by Mihai Vioreann . It’s 35% on chart by Independent Medical & Dental Association.
    Oops!

    1. GiggidyGoo

      Bowers is another of them.
You can see the way RTE is trying to form our opinions, One article requires four+ RTE ‘reporters’, some of which report outside the locked gates of Leinster House, but all singing from the same hymn sheet.
Times was when Charles Mitchell. could be relied upon to give the news all by himself.

      1. Holden

On a less insidious note has anyone else noticed the amount of puns in RTE Six-One news reports? I sometimes sit down with the folks for dinner at 6 and have noticed a lot of them. For example “Logging off” used to discuss Coillte reserving Dublin forests for recreational use only.
There’ve been a few more. Are they bored? Is it a dare? It’s very US-news-reporter-in-a-movie.

  3. Fintan Frobisher

A non-elected UK government advisor explains how he took his son perfectly legally to his grandparents’ house as he and his wife were showing Covid-19 symptoms.
Mary Lou McDonald says she would have fought for the IRA and supports/justifies murdering hundreds of innocent men, women and children.
Yet who are the Irish media obsessed more about this morning ?

    1. Ghost of Yep

He’s plastered all over the English papers. I’m catch and release.

      Have a wonderful day.

    2. bisted

…in fairness, you Tans were much better at targeting innocents…Bloody Sunday, Dublin/Monaghan bombings, Miami Showband…

    3. Rob_G

Sure why wouldn’t he be all over the papers – everyone enjoys watching the Brits make a tit of things.

        1. bisted

…nice to see you still with us Golden…thought that editing comments had stopped…in the words of that great UK parliamentarian (whose name escapes me)…’don’t let the buggers grind you down…’

          1. goldenbrown

            thanks bisted
it might seem like a nothing to many but it’s a immutable fundamental in my view…maybe I overreacted a little but maybe I also made my point and point taken, who knows

anyway sun is bateing down I’m off out to somewhere within a 5 km radius

          2. millie in handcuffs

            I don’t think so.

They’ve edited my comments in the past, usually in a more jocular manner than with you and it’s fairly evident that they have, and I tend not to mind.

But it very much depends on the context of the comment, imo, and they should make it clear that they have amended the comment (beyond the ‘silly booboo’ replacement of swear words etc.) when a genuine point is being made, as opposed to the nonsense I prefer to post.

    4. ReproBertie

“he took his son perfectly legally to his grandparents’ house as he and his wife were showing Covid-19 symptoms.”

So he lied in the Spectator article then?

I have to be honest, this new incarnation as an outraged fanboy defending Cummings at all turns is hilarious. I’m thoroughly enjoying your ongoing “Leave Britney alone!” moment. It’s not as if you had any credibility but to toss away any self respect you did have just to defend the clearly false position of a proven liar for no reward is quite a thing to see.

      1. ReproBertie

Except that I care nothing about the shadowy forces operating in the British establishment. If they want to be run by a bunch of untouchable, unelected advisors that’s their concern.

      2. Fintan Frobisher

It’s hard to take advice on resectability from someone who has spent years on here predicting Brexit would never happen.
But it does explain the bitterness.
It’s like a little Irish mini-me version of the band of UK Remoaners currently demanding Cummings’ head.
He’s going nowhere you silly boopkins.

        1. ReproBertie

Ah Spoofer, well you know that not once did I say Sasamach wouldn’t happen. I’ve consistently said that the border would be in the Irish Sea. If you have a post from me saying it wouldn’t happen then feel free to produce it and prove me a liar.

I never said Cummings was going anywhere. I’m well aware of how the Brits like to be ruled over by a class they see as better then they are and consider it correct when that class do as they please. That’s what comes of living under a feudal system like a monarchy. Keep jumping to the defence your lord and master and you might get an extra turnip.

          1. goldenbrown

“how the Brits like to be ruled over by a class they see as better then they are”

            THIS

never ceases to amaze, amuse and confuse me

sometimes they’re entertainment in a box

The Chancellor is Hindu, his father was a GP. The same as Leo Varadkar’s father.
The Home Secretary is a Sikh whose parents fled Uganda to set up a newsagents in the UK.
The Foreign Secretary is a Jew whose father was a food manager for Marks and Spencer.

What class would you put them all in ?

          3. ReproBertie

My goodness! Three whole people in positions of authority that you roll out in some sort of “some of my best friends are” attempt to disguise your fawning obedience to the ruling class. It’s funny how quickly they shake off their backgrounds when they get a little power and even funnier that you are utterly blind to it.

          4. ReproBertie

Ah the whataboutery, where would you be without the whataboutery?

But no, not like Leo at all. Have you being paying attention to his political career beyond the British tabloids having a go at him for daring to question their new utopia Sasamach jingoistic garbage? The only way you could say it applies to Leo is that he has tossed aside his inner Tory and become a socialist with his €350 payments and nationalising the private hospitals. He’ll swiftly switch back when the new government is formed and he has to deal with paying it all back.

    5. Who am I now

fair play for your gaminess, but what’s the point old boy? you’ll only go too far and get banned again

    6. A Person

I have to agree with FF. Irish media obsessed, including BS, with some gobshite in Downing Street, but no coverage of Mary Lou and her comments about the IRa. Who killed more?

      1. Who am I now

        100%

Irish media is a contradiction in terms anyway.

        absolute horse biscuits

    7. Ringsend Incinerator

Can you imagine if the IRA killed 37,000 Brits in three months? Good man Boris.

  4. GiggidyGoo

Specsavers have now introduced an additional test for bean savages – if you can drive for a certain distance without glasses, and can identify two Little Chef restaurants en route, your eyesight is perfect.

    1. SOQ

Well- if it was only guidance then why was the guards enforcing it as law? As I said, Leo knew what he was doing.

      1. Cian

The 2m isn’t in the legislation; it isn’t a law. Therefore it is a recommendation or only guidance.

Did you see any Garda out with a measuring tape to see if the 2m was being adhered to? Or were they going around enforcing that actual law.

          1. Cian

Up until last Monday (18th) the law said that people should remain at home unless they were doing something on a prescribed list – e.g. essential work, shopping, exercising within 2km of home.

Sitting in the park was not on the list, so was against the law.

          2. SOQ

The only thing that has changed since then is the extension from 2 to 5 KM is it?

If sitting in the park was against the law then, it surely still is now? Except that is not what Holohan is saying now so they both can’t be right surely?

          3. Cian

lots of changes in the law: http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2020/si/174/made/en/pdf

            2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 18th day of May 2020.
            […]
“(i) exercise outdoors alone, or go outdoors alone for recreational purposes, within a 5 kilometre radius of the relevant residence,
(ia) exercise outdoors, or gather together outdoors for social or recreational purposes, within a 5 kilometre radius of the relevant residence –
            […]
(ii) with a maximum of 3 other persons who do not reside in the relevant residence,
            […]

            my emphasis.

          4. ReproBertie

            That’s not true SOQ.

Under phase 1 “Up to 4 people who don’t live together can meet outdoors while keeping at least 2 metres apart.”

That would cover sitting in the park.

          5. SOQ

So where has the law changed in relation to being chased out of a park for sitting on you own within the designated radius of your home?

          6. ReproBertie

Don’t tell me you wouldn’t consider a picnic to be covered under a social or recreational purpose?

Oh, you edited your comment to ask a question that was answered previously when it was pointed out that Phase 1 lifted the restriction that stopped people sitting in the park. Ah well.

          7. Cian

            @SOQ
“So where has the law changed in relation to being chased out of a park for sitting on you own within the designated radius of your home?”

            The original law was S.I. No. 121/2020 – Health Act 1947 (Section 31A -Temporary Restrictions) (Covid-19) Regulations 2020 – 8th day of April 2020 – [http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2020/si/121/made/en/print ]
            it said:
Restriction of movement of applicable persons
            4. (1) An applicable person shall not leave his or her place of residence without reasonable excuse.
            […]
            (i) exercise, either alone or with other persons residing in the relevant residence, within a 2 kilometre radius of that residence,
            […]

and I’ve removed all the other “reasonable excuses” – essential work, shopping, helping elderly, legal, etc.

A few posts higher I have the changes brought in from last Monday.

“sitting on your own” isn’t one of the reasonable excuses – hence the Gardaí asking people to move on.

        1. GiggidyGoo

So, the hospitality sector need have no great worries once their lockdown is lifted. They can operate as they have done prior to Covid-19.
In fact, any sector needn’t worry. Even the Airline sector. How will Claire approach it tonight?
‘Here’s what you don’t have to do’ ?

          1. ReproBertie

I don’t see why offices can’t all reopen immediately following this 2M comment. Hard to see it as anything other than a big foot in mouth moment by the CMO.

        2. GiggidyGoo

What law were the Gardai enforcing when they were hassling people in parks? Oh – the non-compliance with an instruction of a Garda law I suppose?

          1. SOQ

This is a convenient way of putting a perceived ‘social distance’ between himself and Holohan- for what purpose remains to be seen but I suspect it is because this thing has run its course and will disappear quite rapidly.

The economic carnage will only become apparent once the dust has settled and then will come the the mother of all public opinion blow backs.

          2. Who am I now

Yea I was wondering the same Giggidy
I think the only thing you can do people for there is refusing to follow the direction of a garda. However it’s not a blanket instruction as I understand, the Garda has to form the impression the person is being a nuisance or likely to do harm to himself or others, if he/she is carrying on their lawful business, there is not much else they can do. Hence the antics in that video by your buddy up in Ballinamore a few weeks back.

          3. Who am I now

poor giggidy’s memory must be at him.
he knows exactly who his buddy in ballinamore is
a loudmouth cretin interfering with gardai in the normal course of their duties

          4. GiggidyGoo

Still haven’t a clue what you’re on about B9. Who is this in Ballinamore, and what makes you think Inhave any buddies in Ballinamore.

    2. Who am I now

Taoiseach Holohan is doing a far better job than any of your SF boys would manage, they’d be like here wrap this green flag around ye there lads and ye’ll be grand, oh and don’t play the tin whistle for a week or two

        1. Who am I now

A bit snarky are we today? Go back to your rivetting Covid 19 5g Conspiracy bunk please.

          1. SOQ

No, its just the sort of thing Charger would say is all.

Oh and if you want to discuss the scientifically proven cancer risks of EMF- feel free.

          2. Who am I now

Not with you I don’t chief

Now go back to your curtain-twitching. Carry on old chap.

        2. GiggidyGoo

A case of so many usernames, so little time. Google must be thrilled to be supplying so many burner e-mail addresses to him.

      1. jamesjoist

Holohan is the poster boy for now , watch what will happen when the politicians start reclaiming their power . Now that the crisis seems to have abated there will be blood smeared all over the H S E as they look for someone to sacrifice for the nursing homes despicable shambles.

        1. Who am I now

          It won’t be Holohan though.
Senior civil servants like him are so long in the game they know where to deploy grenades.

    1. Who am I now

Inferiority complex, deeply ingrained, he plays them all like an oboe I must say.

      1. Fintan Frobisher

Don’t forget the shame and embarrassment as well as the inferiority complex.
Not a single mention in any reply of Mary Lou’s support for mass murderers.

        1. GiggidyGoo

I think you got your reply yesterday – by Bisted as far as I can recall – which kinda shut you up pretty quick.

          1. class wario

I don’t really think he cares about being ‘shut down’ tbh and i’d question why anybody thinks he does or that if they post juuuust the right essay he’ll accept defeat

          2. Fintan Frobisher

The fundamental problem with your assertion of accepting defeat is that you think there’s a battle being fought.
With Britannia on one side and plucky Eire on the other.
The serried ranks of Boris,Brexit,Cummings and Perifidious Albion ranged against the rebellious pikestaff-bearing,Arran jumper-wearing rosy-cheeked defenders of the Emerald Isle.
It’s a common mistake made on here and more widespread in the Irish media which often sees itself as the defender of the establishment rather than the champion of the people.
There’s no battle between the UK and Ireland who have more in common than those keyboard warrior Eirbots would have you believe.
We like you. You’re a good bunch of lads who take a drink. You let us borrow your best footballers and we send you our journeymen to make sure you have a national team.
We just don’t obsess about our shared past to quite the same extent as you.
It’s time to mature as a nation and move on.

          3. millie in handcuffs

It’s so nice to see you found some fresh material and a real purpose in life.

          4. Nigel

Well nobody wants to dwell on the past when you’re the evil tyrant bastard rapacious murderers, so that’s understandable on your part, Salm.

        2. Rosette of Sirius

Anyone watching the TV version of What We Do In The Shadows? Well Colin, the energy vampire, just found that trolling on the web fed him just enough energy to survive. Very funny. Reminded me of what some folks here might be like irl. ‘Specially the boul Frobes here…. feasts on the negative energy of those he hooks.

    2. Nigel

He’s part of the Broadsheet commentariat, has been for years and we all care for him, so when he gets cranky and lashes out and signals his need for attention we give him some, because we’re good people.

    1. millie in handcuffs

I find the lack of media attention surrounding this equally baffling. When I saw the story posted yesterday, I genuinely thought we’d see something of a media kerfuffle today, but there’s been nothing. It’s very odd.

He should be held to account for it; he is the Taoiseach.

      1. Nigel

Different countries, different medias, different people, different positions, different contexts, different activities, different responses. One went to a park with friends, one drove 160 miles to, uh, test his eyesight? Amongst other things. There are obvious similarities – people in authority setting a bad example – but they’re entirely superficial.

        1. scottser

it’s more that cummings drove 260 miles with his wife who had covid and then drove another 60 miles with his family in the car to ‘test his eyesight’. varadkar going to the park to show off his abs is not the same thing by a country mile.

      2. Rosette of Sirius

Leo is under pressure for breaching lockdown. Cummins is under pressure for breaching isolation. Two wildly different propositions.

One of these things is not like the other, or so the ditty on Sesame Street went!

Personally I have no issue with what Leo did. However what Cummins did was egregious. I only really give a hoot as we share a border with the UK.

      3. Rob_G

Probably the difference between the is that Cummings may have actually had COVID 19 when he decided to travel to travel to the far side of the country.

      4. Fintan Frobisher

Unusually Bodger is right on this one.
Imagine the outcry in the Irish media if Boris had been the one photographed in the park.
The rest of the excuses being trotted out on here are arrant hypocrisy.

        1. bisted

…wha…not content at ruining John McGuirks reputation by calling him nice, now you’re agreeing with Bodger…step away from the gin…

          1. Fintan Frobisher

Step away ? I’ve only just got here.
4pm is gin’o’clock in the Frobisher household.
In case you’re wondering it’s Gordon’s gin, Aldi botanicals and Feavertree tonic.
Just sparking up the first Romeo Y Julieta of the day too. It’s a Wide Churchill.
            Marvellous.

          2. bisted

…ok…I can resist anything but temptation…I’ll join you in this virtual pub…mine’s Hendrick’s…got a bottle for my birthday but I’ve finished the Fevertree so it’s Scheppes but I still have some cucumber and heart-shaped ice cubes curtesy of Lidl…don’t smoke anymore but bizarrely my birthday hamper also has some fresh figs…

          3. Fintan Frobisher

OfGood choice with Hendricks.A fine gin.
I quite like the Lidl Hampstead London Dry too.Especially the price.
Can’t get to grips with CDG. Too oily for my palate.
Lady Frobisher gets these botanicals from Aldi – basically cardamom pods, juniper berries and cinnamon sticks. They seem a bit of a faff to me but she thinks they add an air of sophistication and I learned a long time ago not to argue.
The Fevertree is definitely worth the investment though.

          4. bisted

…Hendrick’s off course is Scottish…yet another choice you won’t have to make when Nicola gets her new referendum after you get your no deal brexit done…

          5. Fintan Frobisher

In the entirely remote event of Scotland becoming an independent country I would imagine exports would be a key feature of their desperate economic survival.
Like the Cuban cigar I’m currently enjoying …
