That Seemed To Go Well

From top: Sarah McInerney; Supermac’s founder Pat McDonagh

This morning.

RTE Radio One’s Today with Sarah McInerney.

‘Do you think things like that aren’t an incentive to come back to work when you’re taking 20c off somebody who is earning the minimum wage an hour?’ she said.

[Pat McDonagh replied] ‘That’s not the point at all Sarah, the point is they get a meal worth €10, if we charge €1.60 for the meal then I think the value is much greater and they can get a coffee or a break whenever they want.’

He said that the docking of pay for meals ‘hasn’t been an issue up to now’ and that it seems his staff are ‘quite happy’.

‘Of course you’re going to get the exceptions here and there but that’s okay. That’s business. ‘

  1. Who am I now

An absolute poo salesman if there was ever one
Hilariously popular with boggers though his utter swill.

  2. Ringsend Incinerator

To be fair, McDonagh is a the kind of boss who consumes his own dogfood before unleashing it on the bogger palate.

He needs to work out, cop on, and fupp off.

  3. Fintan Frobisher

    He’s right though.
The number of people who did a few hours work for some beer money can’t believe their luck – €350 a week for getting a tan drinking slabs in the back garden.
40% of those getting PUP are earning more than they did when they were working.
There’ll be some bill to pay when this is all over, mark my words.
Anway, I only popped in from the sun for some more Gordon’s.
    As you were.

Bombay Star of India is my kinda gin but if you can get it, Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Gin is worth a splurge…

    1. Fintan Frobisher

Jeez, lads, now my choice of gin is getting a good kicking.
I like it so up yours.

      1. Rosette of Sirius

Well. Given you moved to this fair isle for a better life, you can always enjoy a better gin…

    2. Janet, I ate my avatar

you get a back garden for 350 a week , do you live in buttfupp nowhere !?

Supermacs don’t sell food that is healthy enough to eat everyday so taking money out of people’s pay for unsuitable food is absolute nonsense. Does he want to give his staff heart-disease?

    1. Lilly

Yes, but didn’t he say they dock €1.60, so if they sell decent coffee, you’ll get your money’s worth even if you skip the food.

  5. theo kretschmar schuldorff

At 17:21 into the interview, McDonagh refers to “Cupid 19”.
    Sounds like a raunchy sci-fi

  6. A Person

Hey Mick, why don’t your party go into govt and do something about the minimum wage?

  7. frank

    His point is well made.
It has been sadly spun into something else. His point, if you wish to listen to it is – how is a mother supporting a family is entitled to the same €350 that a part time teenager gets. He argues that it is unfair on the mother and she should be paid more and that the smelly teenager should take back his job and work hard until he escapes the rat trap…..
May I point out to the reader I worked through college in another fast food hellscape. I escaped the rat trap.
I’m on this scratch now at 45 years of age with all the things the smelly teenager thinks is a pile of shoite. the mortgage, the kids, the car, the business that is finished. So I applaud Pat McDonagh. I deserve more than the smelly teenage because I’m older, fatter and more betterer than smelly.

Kinda hilarious the way RTE always focus on workers rather than employers. I know of two mid-sized companies who are scamming the covid payment while bringing back some employees full time.

I thought that this article was going to be about the New Zealand PM – McInerney is very like her.

    1. Chuckenstein

Ardern’s features are much thinner. Sarah is a ringer for Andrea McLean and takes no shite either. A couple of interviewees have tried and failed to beat her to the punch over the last couple of weeks but she has a steady, unflappable way about her.

  9. realPolithicks

Perhaps if he tried paying his employees a living wage he might find it easier to find people.

    1. wearnicehats

Oh God – the old living wage barnacle. I’ve brought this up God knows how many times. Ok – explain to me how this works

      1. People on minimum wage find it hard to afford things
      2. Minimum wage goes up
      3. Wage costs for practically every food producer rise
      4. Cost of basic items increases as a result
      5. People on minimum wage find it hard to afford things

      etc

    2. Daisy Chainsaw

Pat McDonagh is the employer equivalent of a slumlord. People shouldn’t be grateful just to have a job, particularly one as badly paid with deductions for food and uniform that he takes.

      1. realPolithicks

There are way to many people like him unfortunately Daisy, the only thing they care about is profit.

  10. dylad

I’ve had supermacs twice in the space of 10 years- both times had the squits afterwards. Bloody squits.
