US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order challenging the liability protections of social media companies
Trump wants to change the design
Of places where folk chat online
So Facebook must choose
To support his fake news
Or else face a crippling fine

he’s remarkably predictable, a true narcissist.
about time
Have we forgotten those victims of on
Line abuse leading to suicide
Now hopefully the law suits will make social media liable for what they facilitate
well it’s all kicking off now, just in…….
Twitter accused President Donald Trump on Friday of “glorifying violence”, attaching a disclaimer to one of his tweets about unrest in Minneapolis that it said broke its rules.
“…These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won*t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!” Trump’s tweet read.
Trump’s message can now be read only after clicking on a notice which says: “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.”
In a thread, Twitter said it had taken the action “in the interest of preventing others from being inspired to commit violent acts”. People will still “be able to retweet with comment, but will not be able to like, reply or retweet it.”
will be interesting to see how after eventually abandoning Twitter he turns Pinterest to shout his mouth off….maybe one-off crafty canvas’ of his rants written in crayon…be like banksy or something kerchinnng

‘…the mass execution threat in Trump’s tweet is a direct quote from an article by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley’s about his 1968 lynching campaign.’

I have ta’ ask
Does the Donald actually manage this @RealDonaldTrump bluetick account himself
anyone ever see him live tweeting,
like what kinda phone does he have
an itsy bitsy one for his weird little hands
one he keeps stored up his poo hole so anyone with sense can’t take it away from him, unfortunately
Karen being Karen.
I really dislike Trump. He’s a disaster. And I am in favour of free speech.
But reading (on the bbc) about Trump’s proposed rules, the one that stuck out at me as being quite reasonable (I suspect there’s nonsense in there as well) is where social media companies, who otherwise can rightly claim not to be publishers, lose that right when they amend or add to posts. They then become responsible for it. This seems reasonable. Rather like the old idea that a local authority wasn’t legally responsible for a cracked pavement but they were IF they tried to fix it and it was still dangerous.
Better to ban people/ remove posts than try to amend/clarify them…..maybe
he’s not advocating for free speech though news, is he? he’s insisting that his online platform of choice not interfere with his spreading of lies and hate. we all know you can’t just say what you want without consequence. it’s like he genuinely has no idea what ‘free speech’ means – which would be ok if he was just another moron but he’s the US president, unfortunately.
I think you’re right. What he’s doing, he’s doing because he’s a manchild and a narcissist.
But the publisher/platform thing is a legitimate debate.
In saying that, I couldn’t care less, in fact, I’m delighted twitter blocked/highlighted his tweet this morning about shooting people. He’s a nasty piece of work.
These social media platforms seriously need some form of regulation and accountability, absolutely no question, but yeah, with Tump it’s a power grab to stifle criticism of himself.
it also means now this is law others can sue social media
So trump wins and others will be able now to use the courts to make social media account for its Wild West
What’s good for the goose
So good will come out of it
i think george has it right below; if twitter becomes legally liable for what trump or any user says on its platform then it would be reasonable to delete his account for breach of their user policy.
Apart from social media , there are still mainstream tv and radio and , of course , the printed press that are used to misinform the public . I have to wonder what the ‘tenor’ of coverage would be like if President Xi had made President Trump’s remarks , re the protests in Hong Kong .
if social media become legally responsible for his content they’ll have to ban him from posting it.
For all the issues surrounding this, I think it’s ultimately about keeping people from voting. People are wringing their hands about Twitter enforcing their own rules as an assault on freedom, but not the president of the US going out of his way to spread lies and misinformation about voting and other things in order to reduce the numbers voting in November.
true enough. god knows if he was on broadsheet he’d have been banned a long time ago..
I thought he was around the odd time, judging by some comments ;)
…this all goes to show how truly bad crooked Hillary was…
agreed So it’s time for
Bernie to re enter the race
Why? Bernie lost to Hilary AND Biden. If they’re bad candidates and he loses to them, he must be worse…
…well…it is a binary contest…crooked Hillary was miles ahead in the polls so loads of people didn’t bother voting…handing an unlikely victory to Trump…this time you’ve a choice between two old male, white right wingers…heh x 3…
So she wsn’t a bad candidate, she was TOO good a candidate. Weird flex, but ok.
