He and Jennifer Warnes did a duet of it after she released Famous Blue Raincoat. Well worth a listen. Of course I cannot find the link right now.

Oh wow that is a must listen. I’ll have to see if I can find it. My two favourite voices right there.

      1. Pee Pee

        Yeh I’d prefer ‘Suzanne’.
‘And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China’ is pure lovely.

I really enjoyed that version and I have it on permalink: Miley has an incredible voice and range, and there were some great other songs in The Backyard Sessions.

She also did a wonderful duet with godmother Dolly at the Grammys a few years back.

But I must admit I still think there is something about the passion and vulnerability in Dolly’s original that makes it my favourite

that was really interesting, however you clearly did not witness my one and only drum lesson,
unfortunately any rythmn I have resides in the auld snake hips

for a second, I thought you were linking to a chris de burgh song, Janet

would have been so painful to insult you but I was resolved momentarily to doing it

Have you ever seen Veda’s (Dublin drag) version of that Patrica the interior designer song?

        New pint please?

          A l’arrière des berlines
          On devine
          Des monarques et leurs figurines
          Juste une paire de demi-dieux
          Livrés à eux
          Ils font des p’tits
          Il font des envieux

          A l’arrière des dauphines
Je suis le roi des scélérats
          A qui sourit la vie

          Marcher sur l’eau
          Éviter les péages
          Jamais souffrir
          Juste faire hennir
          Les chevaux do plaisir

          Osez osez Joséphine
          Osez osez Joséphine
Plus rien n’s’oppose à la nuit
          Rien ne justifie

          Usez vos souliers
          Usez l’usurier
          Soyez ma muse
Et que ne durent que les moments doux
          Durent que les moments doux
          Et que ne doux

          Osez osez Joséphine
          Osez osez Joséphine
Plus rien n’s’oppose à la nuit
          Rien ne justifie

          Osez osez
          Osez osez
          Osez osez Joséphine

          Rien ne justifie

Mine has to be Katie (my daughter’s name) sung by the wonderful Mary Black who has just celebrated her 65th birthday. If you’re going to sing a song sing an Irish song :-)

  3. Rosette of Sirius

We had Dolly’s, now we have Ray Lamontagne’s Jolene.

From his 2004 album Trouble it’s a completely different song and melody to Dolly’s.

A powerful song about love, regret and pain and being a screw up. here it is performed live at the BBC.

    I really love this song and especially the chorus;

I found myself face down in the ditch
    Booze on my hair
    Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don’t know what love means
Still don’t know what love means
    Jolene

    Tindersticks “Kathleen”

a typically gloom-laden take on Townes Van Zandt already non-cheery original.

It’s plain to see, the sun won’t shine today
But I ain’t in the mood for sunshine anyway
    Maybe I’ll go insane
I got to stop the pain
Or maybe I’ll go down to see Kathleen.

I really love her work and her voice. I was sorry when she pretty much dropped out of sight, but I hear if you were lucky she occasionally turned up at gigs by friends, and particularly Donal Lunny.

    Black Merda – Cynthy-Ruth (1970)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLN4eo0J1I8

Singer, VC L Veasey, on choosing the name for the band:

‘ I suggested “Black Murder” to bring attention to the widespread killing of black people that was occurring at that time in the fight for civil rights. We later changed the spelling to “Black Merda”. ‘

  6. Danny

Martha by Tom Waits, heartbreak song

Michelle by the Fab Four but mainly Paul

    Angie by the Stones

  7. goldenbrown
