    Well played Marcus Rashford.

Cuts in from the left wing, hits a screamer with Johnson beaten all ends up.

VAR chalking it down as an own goal.

Comments all over the football forums from fans of each premier league club promising Marcus Rashford a standing ovation. ‘This is England’ he tweets, showing what can be achieved when everyone pulls together. Unlike Johnson’s government who divide, conquer and starve their children.
    Tories really are scum.

From a political point of view it seems like a no-brainer £120mil and Borris could be feeding kids for the summer and yet his right-wing hatred of the poor wouldn’t allow him to do it.

There’s a strong early showing this morning on the new Inferiority Complex Index.
A major drug breakthrough in treating C-19 and some dreadful economic data from Ireland’s Central Bank on the front pages.
But the usual suspects squeal like stuck pigs over Boris Johnson answering an excellent lobbying campaign by an English footballer by extending free school meals for needy kids in the UK this summer.
Ireland, meanwhile, has no such plan in place for this country’s poor.

Especially on the day the UK announces Covid-19 drug breakthrough that makes headlines around the world.
As a woman and possible mother surely you must have some thoughts on Ireland not extending its school meals programme for the summer ?

wouldya ever calm down there on the Covid-19 drug breakthru rhetoric and maybe take a just a few mins to read the small print?

whilst Dexamethasone (or any drug/treatment) that helps 12.5% of the unfortunates who have ended up on ventilators in an ICU survive it’s hardly a drop in the ocean of the overall problem of defeating Sars-Cov-2 now is it? hm?

            slow news day

          3. GiggidyGoo

Are children in schools in Ireland during the summer?

By the way – the ‘results’ of this wonder drug breakthrough isn’t peer reviewed, with other scientists wishing to review the evidence of this preliminary result for themselves.

And another ‘by the way’. When are the true figures (to include nursing home Covid-19 deaths) going to be released in the UK.? How many thousands will that add to the 42,000 (yes, forty – two thousand) deaths already reported?

          4. Charger Salmons

Some Irish schools do provide food though. Mainly the DEIS scoileanna I think but I could be wrong.

With the schools closed food parcels were being delivered to families of students on an opt in basis. Long before Marcus Rashford started, there was a small campaign to have the deliveries continued during the summer but the department ruled it out as they don’t normally fund the service to the schools during the summer holidays. Perhaps the British government being shamed into a U-turn will inspire people in Ireland to pick up the campaign again and, if so, I would be all for it. The ongoing government formation situation may be a stumbling block but we still have a Minister for Education and a Minister for Children so they could take action before moving on.

          1. millie von strumpet

My young one goes to a school that provides meals. There is a menu of healthy foods, like multi grain rolls, pasta, fruit salads and yogurts, along with fruit and rice cakes etc. It’s an excellent system. We choose a menu for her using an online system, which can be changed if required.

The school offered every parent the option to continue taking these meals if needed during lockdown. It’s a brilliant system, and it ensures that every child gets a healthy meal regardless of their background or situation at home.

          2. scottser

fair play millie and RB, i didn’t know they did – it’s a seriously important initiative. i did some teaching years ago in a VEC school and they ran a breakfast club for the kids. for the 70 or 80 euro per week it cost to run it, it’s the best value for money you’ll get anywhere. it really is a no-brainer, we should have a school meals programme in every school.

so we can ditch the 2M distancing rule so long as we don’t stay in a gaff for longer than 90 mins?

can anyone point me to the science behind that idea please? is it medical science or economic science?

      1. paul

they’re figuring it on pure probability, like you can stick your hand in a fire for a split second and be grand but the longer you leave it in, the greater the chance of getting burned. They’ve slid the scale on what is acceptable risk and came up with 90 minutes but aren’t saying what the risk is. Does it go from 0.25% to 1% in those 90 minutes? Maybe 5%? Maybe higher?

          1. Cian

“I’m wondering how the government propose to police it.”

And this comment is typical of you. Everything is the government’s responsibility (or fault).

Why? Why should the government have to police this? Why can’t people take personal responsibility? It’s common sense. The government can make a recommendation (like the 2m distance) without making it a law or policing. People can choose to follow it or not.

          2. GiggidyGoo

Well then, Cian, why are Government agencies putting it out there in the first place?
And my point is that it can’t, it won’t, be policed. So why the bullology? Have a look back since January, and show me why the Government should get a ‘get out of free card’ at all for any of this bullology?
What’s your apologist version of, say, Harris and his 18 other Covids. Does he have to be policed?

          3. Cian

why are Government agencies putting it out there in the first place?
That is their role – to advise people on best practice.

As paul said above: it’s “probability, like you can stick your hand in a fire for a split second and be grand but the longer you leave it in, the greater the chance of getting burned.”

If the HSE said “don’t go too near people or spend too long talking to them” it would technically be correct but not very useful – what is “too near” or “too long”.

Simple messages work best. We have a 2 metre rule; in the UK it is a 6 foot rule. Does UK COVID work to imperial measurements and EU COVID use metric? No – a “not too near” was converted to a simple message.

Cocooning for the vulnerable was another piece of advice given by the State. There was no legislation behind it. It wasn’t a law. It wasn’t “policed”. People saw it was sensible advice and stayed home and/or supported others to stay home by shopping for them. Was that “bullology” too?

  6. paul

it’s odd that Irish papers are saying that a 70c wonder drug will save lives but the UK papers are saying it’s a £5 drug. Different drug, different tax, different calculation?

      1. paul

that was my thinking as well but it seems a massive increase. Bulk buying and negotiating power do good work.

      2. Charger Salmons

The UK has 200,000 courses of dexamethasone stockpiled.
In drug cost terms it’s cheap as chips.
Had this research been known at the beginning of the outbreak it would have saved tens of thousands of lives around the world.
        A remarkable research achievement.

But Brexit is still a big deal for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whose political career is built upon delivering it, even if pollsters say most Britons now care much more about the economic crisis and the virus.”

There are no thoughts on Irish school dinners being provided throughout the Summer. Irish journalists are too busy churning out pro GFFG fairy stories to ensure the usual piggies are returned to the trough for their swill. Perish the thought a penny might be spent to feed children!

You want Breaking news, so to speak.

‘ Austrian police fined a man 500 euros for loudly breaking wind after officers stopped him earlier this month to check his identity.

The police defended the massive fine saying he had deliberately emitted a “massive flatulence,” lifting his backside from the bench where he was sitting.

The accused complained of what he called the disproportionate and unjustified fine when he gave his account of the June 5 events on the O24 news website.

In reply to social media commentaries that followed, the police in the Austrian capital justified their reaction on Twitter.

“Of course, nobody is put on the spot if one slips out by accident,” the police said.

However, in this case, the police said, the young man had appeared “provocative and uncooperative” in general.

He then “slightly raised himself from the bench, looked at the officers and patently, in a completely deliberate way, emitted a massive flatulence in their immediate proximity.”

The police said the man can challenge the fine in the legal system. ‘

The US had plateaued and is not bending or turning the curve, there is no second wave, we still in the first. There has been some reporting on the ‘care homes’ or nursing home in NY and NJ-its still early and no real investigations have been concluded but some haver been announced.

The state govt’s have come in for considerable criticism for not doing in person inspections while banning visitors, the lack of inspections have been blamed on no PPP etc.The outcomes for residents of homes subject to in person state inspections are much greater than those that used ‘tech’ (video) to conduct inspections.

I am NOT a health care professional, really dont have much interest in this area but will copy/paste or link to some the better investigative journalism done in this area.

So basically you have NO inspections and visitors banned allowing the homes to operate without any outside supervision, this set of conditions resulted in the worst outcomes for residents and patients.

“I think having more eyes on what’s happening is really important,” Grabowski said.

Last month, the Health and Human Services’ watchdog agency announced plans to review the pace of inspections in nursing homes and barriers to completing them — referring to such checks as a “fundamental safeguard to ensure that nursing home residents are safe and receive high-quality care.”

“There is no substitute for boots on the ground — for going into a facility to assess whether a facility is abiding by long-standing infection control practices,” Verma told reporters this month. ”

        Is a 10 month-gap too long?
How frequently do HIQA say they will hold inspections?
How frequently do you believe inspections should be held?

        1. Johnny

you tell me Cian are FG done killing the residents ?
“To date 24 residents have died from an outbreak of Covid-19 in the 150-bed facility”

          1. Cian

            I asked you first.

As for you question: it reminds me of the “have you stopped beating your wife?” type – it is phrased in such a way so any answer is damning. I don’t accept your underlying statement that “FG done killing” (although it is a step above your previous accusations of murder)..

          2. Johnny

..its such a disingenuous question there there are 24 yes TWENTY FOUR dead people-what do you think Cian-a few inspections may have changed that outcome given no visitors to you know keep an eye on their loved ones….in NY/NJ nursing homes with no inspections and no visitors had worst outcomes…you spin me right round baby right round….

          3. Cian

*You* brought up the lack of inspection!
You still haven’t answered my question: how often should an inspection happen?

Should HIQA have inspected all (500+) homes during the pandemic?
Would a HIQA inspection have saved any lives? And if yes – how?
Could a HIQA inspection have put additional lives at risk?

          4. Johnny

Cian-I went trouble of posting a link to a deep dive into NY/NJ care homes, I have already pointed out i have zero no expertise in this area,i don’t even like visiting hospitals or nursing homes-i design and build indoor farms FFS !

One fund i was working with wanted make a big play and do what’s called a ‘roll up’ of existing facilities into a larger group then exit via a IPO.

It appalled me how they are run-in the states there is little or no money housing then, the juice is in the haircuts,meds-they were ripping off the families by charging them outrageous amounts for the extras, say like even a trip to the shops…it revolted me and i got removed form that fund-never visited one again.

What i’m trying do here is a contrast between NY/NJ and Ireland, both made mistakes,I’m interested in the investigations and yes the media reporting.

…from above-ALL homes that were to take covid patients should have had initial inspections and follow up ones are per head Medicare in USA or NO funds !

“Medicare and Medicaid chief Seema Verma that states complete the checks by July 31 or risk losing federal recovery funds.”

So to answer your question before sending them an inspection should have been done and ongoing inspections-unless your ok with 24 people dying and no one allowed keep an eye on these homes….this is about learning from mistakes i dont even know the ministers names never mind personalizing this-sure i give FG a kick but there are quite lot dead people-it does deserve some scrutiny.

PS-its Day 1 there will be a weekly update on care homes:)

question is why should businesses increase debt to pay for covid

Government closed them down and let’s face it are left with the tab

Wait until we hear a European tax will be put on
    Every citizen to
Pay for the EU rescue plans much like the insurance levy put on
Us all to rescue quinnn group

    1. Cian

Why should the taxpayer increase debt to pay for private businesses?

Any handouts to businesses should have a repayment clause once the business is profitable again.

        1. Cian

Agreed. If NAMA gave a handout to a business there should be a repayment clause once the business is profitable again.

As soon as Enda and Noonan set eyes on Stevie Schwarzman’s (Blackstone) jet landing in Dublin, they decided they wanted some that hedge fund/private equity money.

FG adopted a yank economic model, they sold off most of Irelands developable land and assets to yank carpetbaggers, after stripping it from Irish developers many of whom loans they then forgave to silence them-all in darkness as FG is allergic to any transparency.

It was the biggest heist in Irish history-even worse than the mobile phone lic stroke that established DOB.

    Cork South Central are laughing

A Taoiseach, and two Snr Ministers

and a TD who will definitely be a permanent Sinn Fein front bencher that has the potential to outlive and out stand them all

And that’s before there’s another Leadership bout within Fine Gael

The one I would put on a Risk Register is Michael McGrath,
Michael McGrath is profoundly pro-life and family solidarity all the way
And he is young and quite brilliant
Donnchadh O’Laoghaire is more than able for him, and probably more brilliant and impressive, but I’d be still very wary of taking my eye off McGrath

For those not in the know:
Simon Coveney (FG); Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire (SF); Micheál Martin (FF); Michael McGrath (FF)

Cork South Central has had senior ministerial representation going back decades. Despite this, I’d struggle to think of ways in which the constituency has benefitted from it.

      1. Vanessanelle

        True

and you could say the same for Tipp (formerly Tipp North Riding) and what Lowry has done for them
which in fact is sweet FA
Look at the state of Thurles ffs

But if you measure Cork SC and Dublin SC for political and ministerial heavyweights
The imbalance is impossible to reconcile

Take away the Uptons – this constituency (DSC) has had no-one of substance in decades

        1. Otis Blue

There’s sure to be interesting debates about the M20, the M28 to Ringaskiddy, the Dunkettle interchange , the Events Centre and the long overdue separation of Cork airport from the DAA, to say nothing of the significant job cuts that are coming.

          We live in interesting times.
