This afternoon.
Dáil, Leinster House, Dublin 2.
Labour TD Brendan Howlin said:
“Like others, I’m daily being contacted by people, by hairdressers, by other businesses who want to get back. And we have to have sound, logical, expert reasoning to give to them.
I’m afraid what’s happening in these draft guidelines erodes that because eating food gives you no additional protection.
“You know whether you go in and have your Chicken Korma (top) or your Cottage Pie does not give you extra protection against the virus. And why would that criteria be a determinate. Can you explain that?”
“And also, just because people are asking and will ask, why is 90 minutes determined?”
Minister for Health Simon Harris responded:
“What I would appeal for everyone is to wait for the final guidance…”

Spicy food is better at killing the virus than plain food. Everyone knows that.
but not chinese food, obvs
once it stops moving, it’s grand.
“What I would appeal for everyone is to wait for the final guidance…”
translation: “We’ve not yet thought of a reason that will please everyone.”
Harris: “What I would appeal for everyone is to wait for the final guidance…”
Really on top of his game isn’t he?
I hope the reason is – people who eat in pubs should die.
It’s a clever idea for a cull from the vintners association. Geebags who eat (I’m including crisp & nut eaters here too) will be encouraged back to the pub early doors thus catching all the Covids and therefore allowing pubs to return to the beautiful days of simply drinking.
How do you feel about bacon fries, they’re not really a crisp
or pork scratchings ?
Love a Smiths Scampi Fries and a pint of plain me!
time to die
Actually that might be a proint- if someone is infected while preparing food then surely there is a chance of customers catching it? And then there is the Chinese who have banned all Salmon imports form Europe- because they suspect it is in it.
Karma?
Chameleon?
Two words that come to mind when I think about Labour.
The reason is they are letting restaurants open and some pubs also function as restaurants.
The reason for 90mins is to reduce the duration of potential exposure while making it still viable to go out for a meal. The medical advice alone would mean a time limit of less than 15mins which isn’t long enough to be practical. It is perfectly fair to disagree but not to act like there is no reason when the reasons are obvious.
It doesn’t explain why people can’t sit at a table and enjoy a drink without buying food. Ireland is already going through an obesity epidemic. Why are they forcing food upon us?!

Alcohol makes you fat.
If you allow pubs that serve food to open and serve people who aren’t having food then pubs that don’t serve food will say they should be open too. Then it is an out of control mess. Can you really not think this through?
Amazing…cant catch it in Tesco,Dunnes,Supervalu,Aldi,Lidl,Spar,Gala….but after 90mins in a pub you’re a goner….unless you pay €9 for grub.
This ^^^
In fairness there is a big difference between 15 minutes grabbing a few veg and a bottle of wine and three or four drunk people slobbering in your face for half the night?
On a positive note- when the pubs really do open again- there will be much less loud music because that would discourage any sort of distancing.
You can catch it in all of those places but if we stop buying food we die.
Lest we forget. It took just a small few carriers to introduce this to Ireland. No big deal made over one who went to the north, one doctor in Clare (Galway?) and one student in a band. (Ok and Italians and horsey folk)
Less cases at the start, and we ended up with almost 2000 dead. Now how many cases are there? And we expect everything to be a-ok?
Do you really believe all this started after a few small cases in Feb? The doctor in Clare or the lady who travelled on the Belfast train? There is no logic to that fairy-story… This thing was at it’s peak by then (or possibly even past it’s peak if some experts are right and growth was never exponential).
They have to proceed with caution at this stage but there a lot of things about this lockdown, re-opening & ‘new normal’ that make no sense…
I agree- the speed at which it traveled through nursing homes would suggest a very high level of asymptomatic carriers. It acted like all other coronas- it swept the globe- and, the media fear mongers have a lot to answer for.
There is no ‘new normal’- well apart from the economic ruin some will face.
If it were true that “it swept the globe” why the delays between different countries? Why was the Italian peak 4 weeks before ours? Why was USA a month later, and brazil hasn’t peaked yet?
How did Australia and New Zealand avoid it if there were so many asymptomatic carriers?
Are you saying, Cian, that this virus didn’t sweep the world?
Australia and New Zealand knew what they were at. Unlike the likes of Trump, Varadkar, Johnston etc.
NukeNelly & SOQ seem to be suggesting that it “swept the globe” in Jan/Feb; NukeNelly says it was at it’s peak in Feb; hence my comment.
I believe it has/is sweeping the globe – but at a much slower rate than the previous two said. And I agree that Oz & NZ acted more quickly and effectively than we did.
No, I don’t believe it. Yes, it was a fairy story. We were fed it by Harris and Co. Same way as we are fed fairy stories on a daily basis. FG have a habit of re-classifying things to suit their agenda – homeless for instance, unemployment stats for instance. With Holohan on board, who knows what they are feeding us mow.
What do you believe then? That COVID is a fairy story? Or it only appearing in Ireland in February is a fair tale it was already widespread and hit it’s peak in Ireland in February
I have scrutinised Mr. Howlin’s questioning and query something he said, viz:
“And why would that criteria be a determinate. Can you explain that?”
criterion = singular; criteria = plural.
I think another backbencher, Mr. Healy-Rae, speaks plainer English even though not always grammatical.
Did ye really have to inform us which one is the chicken korma
Hahaha
