‘ Ireland has the highest rate of infection from coronavirus of all health workers globally, the Oireachtas Covid-19 committee has been told. ‘

Looking forward to all the righteous condemnation from the usual suspects on here who love to pass judgement on other health services around Europe.

Well, not all of them obvs.

And because I’m expecting a bit of a surge I’ve had the backroom boffins come up with a new digital version of the famous Inferiority Complex Index with a warning sound for the very worst offenders.

The Digital Inferiority Complex Klaxon, or WINKY-WOO for short, will be triggered by the usual buzzwords – Bungling Boris, the Empire, Perfidious Albion, 800 years, racist xenophobic Tans and many of the other favourites regularly wheeled out.

Back to the Irish Times headline though and who’d have thought that Ireland, like just about every other country in Europe, didn’t have hundreds of millions of pieces of PPE stockpiled .

Mind you, the dreadful rate of care home infections really does point to more serious failures.

      1. Charger Salmons

        Hitler.
No better choice for the inaugural alert of the new digital version of the index, particularly as it also brings into play the famous Godwin’s Law and ignores completely the point about the Irish figures.
        A humdinger first klaxon.
Definitely an 8.5 on the WINKY-WOOter Scale.

Hey Charage, your numbers are hardly great – many countried in Europe did very well. You forgot English exceptionalism. At least the Irish numbers are credible and the Irish Government didn’t decide to let it rip.

      1. Charger Salmons

You think having the world’s worst infection rate amongst front line staff and the second worst globally for care home deaths are ” credible numbers ” ?
        Riiight.

        1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I am in Australia, old chap. Check the numbers and come back to me.

        2. ReproBertie

“the world’s worst infection rate amongst front line staff”

Where’s that then? Because it certainly isn’t Ireland.

    2. Kate

Charger S – I commented months ago that a relative sent my brother out to buy goggles & masks for her ward staff before lock down. Stupidly told by Senior office HSE “not required” — but she overruled — “Ye have business degrees and don’t know what you are talking about”. I’m not in the least surprised.

      1. Charger Salmons

        I remember.
But I also recall no-one much cared at the time.
Certainly not the Irish media which was too busy crowing at events across the water.
I often wonder if Leo and his government had had the cojones to have a press conference at 5pm broadcast live on TV would the media have asked difficult questions ?
Not so sure they’d ever bite the hand that feeds them.

        1. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

Charger I put it to you that you that you are an Irishman just stirring the poo, I know many English people from all walks of life and I’m just not buying your persona anymore

          1. Lush

Of course he is, but he does it so well!
            And everyone takes the bait.
I must admit that it all makes me giggle.
            By the way why spidercrab?

          2. uncle gaybo

I used frequent a football forum 15 or so years ago where a person with the name “Banner Gascoigne” used rattle off the same anti oirish rubbish using very similar language.

When I see “charger salmons” on here I wonder is it that same person, in which case it would be desperately sad waste of one’s years.

          3. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

I have a goo, a gra, a yearning, a salivating needy desire to get my chops around some crab tempura like you wouldn’t believe, my home made crab claws don’t even take the edge off

          4. Lush

I would imagine spider crab is a bit of a trick where you are, but surely decent pastries can be purloined?

          5. Charger Salmons

But it’s not ‘anti-oirish’ per se.
Simply pointing out, in a light-hearted way, the ludicrousness exhibited by certain posters who obsess about Blighty whilst ignoring the same problems they highlight much closer to home.
You know, the ones who cackled about Boris’ U-turn on summer school meals without appearing to care that Ireland has nothing like it here.
            Or Covid-19.
The 75% approval rating for the government’s handling of the pandemic when in terms of infections among frontline workers and deaths in care homes Ireland has the worst figures in the world.
Perhaps if the media spent more time looking inwards rather than across the Irish Sea people here might be angrier.
And Leo wouldn’t have been laughing his face off at the easy ride he got on Prime Time last night.
140 days without a government being held to account during a global pandemic and no-one appears to give a toss.

          6. Charger Salmons

I’ll have you know I’m a little-known folk singer from the North-East of England active in the post-war years.
There may be a little Irish in me Janet.
            Ooer missus.

          7. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

I guess everyone has different taste in comedy ;)

          8. scottser

so charger, you troll everyone for not being critical enough of the government. you busy yourself pointing out our failures while blindly defending the uk’s.
            what does that make you?
            there’s a name for it.
i even made up a scale for it, just like you did.
congratulations, you hit a solid 10 this morning. you couldn’t be more transparent if you tried. i think your schtick is coming to an end old chum – the new usernames and variations on the theme are beyond parody at this stage.
            that is all.

          9. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

ah hear, I used to be able to use that word on here,
ok he bores the bluetits off me ( that’s a little birdy ) jublies..ugh

          10. Andrew

I’m not sure what the indignation is with Charger’s comments or the apparent patriotic defence of our Covid 19 response.
I think our media has been very very poor at holding our government to account and also the HSE . There has been a lot of finger pointing to the UK and very little analysis of our problems here.
I don’t know why people cannot see this.

      2. Charger Salmons

        Well done Kate and Andrew.
Still the only posters on here today willing to discuss or even acknowledge the reasons behind Ireland’s atrocious Covid-19 infections and deaths statistics.
The rest just gobble up any old nonsense their elected politicians dish out to them and wonder why they’re treated with such contempt by the people they whine about on here all day long.
Toothless lapdogs who only yap a good game.

“Ireland hit by a surge of right wing extremism”

There’s a few of them who regularly comment on this website, including this silly.

      1. goldenbrown

or maybe it doesn’t really exist to any meaningful extent
and the lads who are busily writing and fantasising about it
        regularly comment on this website

    4. Daisy Chainsaw

Smugness over people catching a debilitating and possibly deadly illness? How terribly John Bull of you Charage. It shows quite an inferiority complex that you need to go straight to Irish failings, rather than the death toll in good old Blighty. All the Winky Woo klaxons in the world can’t drown out the screaming subtext of a tiny willy.

      1. Charger Salmons

        John Bull ?
        An oldie but a goldie.
Worth at least 7 on the WINKY-WOOter Scale.
Would have got more but Ireland’s terrible figures were at least acknowledged.

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

You wish your own little winky woo was a 7. It’s probably a 3 which is why you’re so angry all the time. Naming your giant klaxon after your tiny winky is very telling.

          1. Charger Salmons

I’d be grateful if you leave my WINKY WOO out of this.
He’s a sensitive chap but you don’t want to make him angry …

I’m surprised charger wasn’t all happy with the antics of the white supremacists from burnley the other day

‘ Ireland has the highest rate of infection from coronavirus of all health workers globally, the Oireachtas Covid-19 committee has been told. ‘

Sadly for Spoofer ,who can’t get enough of a story that makes Ireland look bad, it’s not true.

Even if we ignore countries like Yemen, where health workers are quitting as rather than go to work as there are so many of them dying from Covid, and stick to countries that are close to us on testing, it’s not true. Take the Netherlands as an example.
Netherlands – total infections 47,903, healthcare workers infected 16,942, infection rate 35.46%
Ireland – total infections 25,215, healthcare workers infected 8,087, infection rate 32.15%

Damn facts ruining Spoofer’s Ireland bashing fun.

Why has the Irish Daily Mail the same photo on its front page as the English Daily Mail? Can it not source some Irish photo?

As someone who waved the rainbow flag at times when it was downright dangerous to do so- I have something to say.

-You do not know the history of that flag let alone the statues you feel you have a right to deface.

-You bring shame onto the principles of liberalism and free speech upon which the LGBT community was founded.

-You have a world view so limited as to become exactly what the rainbow flag was proudly flown against.

    -YOU- are a disgrace.

pubs will change their tune as soon as they realise they can get sued when a patron contracts COVID-19 on their premises.

    1. scottser

i would expect a case like that to be thrown out of court leaving the plaintiff with a hefty legal bill.

…I was only commenting today that I hoped get back home in July….MAGA !

“The European Union is preparing to ban American travelers from entering the bloc when it reopens its borders to the outside world on July 1, lumping the U.S. in with Russia and Brazil in terms of countries that have failed to stop the spread of the coronavirus, according to the New York Times.”

We are at phase 2 in NY but everybody is away until Sept-on my block in Soho/Noho at least half the stores. have stripped out their equipment-figuring that turnover would be at best 50% post lock down.

The economic damage is real, we are all wearing masks, no mask no service, socially distancing in general, obsessively washing and cleansing hands,I wear gloves quite a bit.The virus is ripping through the entire fabric of the US,but most people have accepted the risks and want get back work,I bike in out work and don’t use public transport, spend half the week in the country out off Brooklyn/Soho.

The business I am in cannabis is recession proof, people are eating way more edibles, smoking and vaping less. The grow rooms (flowering. weed) adhere to very high health standards, the biggest risk in a large scale grow is humans, spreading germs and diseases from grow room to room so we have always had high levels of PPE in our daily lives.

Examiner has piece on weed consumption falling which would make Ireland a outlier,I will look into it…

      1. Johnny

Rob,i really no really I appreciate all your comments i do its flattering, day after day on every. one my posts, but I don’t really get the ‘connection’ or why you feel the urge is it compulsive or……

Unfortunately the report does not have any incest or rape for you Rob,but it quite a good read.

It covers speed, coke and smack and is a web based survey, the piece in the examiner is in no way reflective of the report.

Th report appeases to be closely aligned with cops or law enforcement so…

Well, as no-one had reacted to your naval-gazing musings about your daily routine in the 10 hours since you had deemed fit to share it with us, I was starting to feel bad on your behalf, and so felt the comment needed a little moral support.

          1. Johnny

…wow you’ve been thinking about me for ten hours im horrified really I am….is that all you’ve been thinking about….wow..

Broadsheet staff – any chance you can include some of the northern titles like the Irish News, Belfast Telegraph and even Newsletter (shudder) in your daily roundup?
I know the likes of the Torygraph and Express are “good for a larf” but aren’t the news and views from the north more relevant than most of the nonsense happening over the water?

    1. Rob_G

This is a Dublin blog for Dublin people – I’m quite sure that Bodger has made that clear through his application of geography.

          1. goldenbrown

you can keep yer common as muck numbers like 2, 4, 6 and 8’s

it’s the areas designated Co. Dublin that have greatest importance surely? ;)

          2. scottser

if my surname was ‘marley’ and i lived in D.16 i would open a butchers and call it ‘marley pork’.

  7. goldenbrown

I just listened to Eamonn Ryan on R1 being “grilled”

    pile of wishy-washy dirge

it that really what we have to look forward to for the next 5 years?!?!?

  8. Charger Salmons

I’ll admit I’m a little groggy this morning.
Had a few snifters last night.
Had to mark the anniversary somehow.
    What’s that you say ? Anniversary ?
    Why yes.
Yesterday marked four years since the UK voted to leave the EU by a decisive margin of 1,269,501 votes.
    Our INDEPENDENCE DAY.
    Take it away Nigel …

I think you might find that the audience for this is elsewhere…perhaps try broadsheet.co.uk

      1. Charger Salmons

Well you would think so wouldn’t you ?
But if you saw how many tens of thousands of words have been expended on here in the last four years by posters predicting Brexit would never happen you’d know otherwise.
And many of those were just the words of Repro O’Bertie Begorrah.
It’s why I think a little reminder once a year is fine.
A sort of reverse ferret WINKY-WOO.

        1. ReproBertie

I never said Sasamach wouldn’t happen Spoofer. Well you know that I predicted a border in the Irish Sea from day one.

You spend more time repeating that lie about me than anything else. You need to let it go and move on. Life’s too short to be spending so much time self-owning like that.

    2. Charger Salmons

And here’s why Boris won Brexit and the December election.
Jeremy Corbyn on the easing of the lockdown: “people and health must come before private profit.”
In this instance, “private profit” refers to hundreds of thousands of small businesses, each desperate to survive and retain staff.
Magic Grandpa dribbling to himself in the corner.

    3. Junkface

Ha ha! Independence days were particularly applied to countries who freed themselves from British rule, you clown.

      1. Charger Salmons

You mean like Australia which still retains the Union Jack as part of its flag ?
Mind you after their cheating escapades in cricket they’re not fit to fly it.

        1. Junkface

No, all of the other countries that were part of the British empire. History is your friend, maybe look it up? Nigel Farrage is not a reliable source for anything.

          1. Charger Salmons

You do know the Empire was in the original terms and conditions of the new,super-dooper Digitial Inferiority Complex Klaxon don’t you ?
But I’ll let you off this time just for the irony of not being able to correctly spell the name of the man you reckon isn’t a reliable source for anything.
            Baddum Tish.

    4. Nigel

Oh dear. Between gloating over irish health care workers and old people getting infected and reliving the lost old glory days and giving that Nazi a tongue bath, things must be going poorly next door.

      1. Charger Salmons

Nigel is the bedrock on which the new Digitical Inferority Complex Klaxon is based.
It’s almost as though the backroom boffins got together and said which humourless, self-important and hubristic BS poster can we base this around and out popped Nigel.
Never fails to step up to the plate to exhibit his low self-esteem and massive inferiority complex.
A WINKY-WOO Club Platinum Card holder.
Straight into the special lounge with the free nibbles for you, my second favourite Nigel.

        1. Nigel

Oh boy Salmon has it bad. Has Johnson sold the NHS off the back of a bus to a strange man for three beans? Wait, is the UK actually on fire? Can somebody check to see if the UK is ok?

          1. GiggidyGoo

Don’t mention beans to Charger. He has a severe longing for the Full British in the Little Chef which he can’t get here. Bean Savages love beans.

        2. scottser

is it the ‘digitial inferiority complex’ or the ‘digitical inferority complex’?
you shouldn’t post with a hangover chargocrite, you make even less sense than you usually do.

          1. Charger Salmons

            Hangover ?
            Not a chance.

It hasn’t anything on Noonan’s Fiscal Space. You know, the thing that SF had to give him lessons on.
Face it Cian, your dolly mixture of Finance, Health, etc. ministers haven’t been up to much over the years.

      1. Cian

        GiggidyGoo (October 28, 2019 at 7:04 pm)
An mores the pity some aren’t prepared to do anything much more than attack the messenger, not the message and try to divert the conversation to their own hang ups.

        Indeed.

        1. GiggidyGoo

If you click on the date on the post you have quoted, you can copy a link so that the full post and conversation can be read. You see, the way you’ve quoted it isn’t from a link and the context of what is written isn’t clear.
Here’s the link. (I didn’t see any of your comments there funnily enough – out of 117 comments you had none (under username Cian anyway), the frape room saved that one, and then, as is the FG way, take it out of context)
          https://www.broadsheet.ie/2019/10/26/sundays-papers-5/

          1. Cian

LOL. *You* are so high-and-mighty about everyone else. But you are one of the worst offenders for attacking other posters rather than their posts. And then you cry when you think others do it to you. boohoo

No, I didn’t post on that topic. Again you are attacking me. I only use one name on BS.

On that page you also wrote:
There’s a tendency here to attack the person posting and disregard the content of the post and produce a label for the poster.
Indeed. Although I hadn’t realised you were talking about yourself.

            and

How I come across here isn’t actually my problem. Other posters views on my views are their ‘problem’ if they attack me, and not the subject matter of my posts.
            Boohoo.

          2. GiggidyGoo

Well, well, well. As I said, you quoted a line. The complete discussion I had to link to because you hadn’t the guts to. And when you look at the discussion (from 8 months ago mind you) there’s no sign of the Ciany boy, but yet he produces an out-of-context line.

Somehow I’m not so convinced now about your name usage here. Your defense mechanism has gone into overdrive since I produced the link to the complete thread which paints a far different picture than your cherry-picking the odd line here and there.

Your answer above is scurrying for cover. You’ve been caught once again trying to use diversionary tactics, and the production of the full story outs you as the typical FGer.

Now – go back to your frape room and your FG buddies and file this conversation. Who knows? – you may need it in February 2021 to pick a phrase from. You’ve been laid bare.

          3. Cian

Another quote from you where you give out about posters that don’t debate but got to person attacks. Now who keeps doing that? *you*

            GiggidyGoo October 28, 2019 at 9:25 am
The problem is with people that are unwilling to debate and resort to assumptions and personal attacks. And the problem is theirs

(same thread as above) If you read the entire thread is it you giving about out about other posters doing what you have done here.
“the odd line here and there” LOL

          4. GiggidyGoo

Yep Cian. You sure have the hurry-outs. Still picking a line out of context. The defense mechanism ain’t working. What do you mean ‘if’ I read the whole thread?. I was part of the thread. (You weren’t surprisingly enough, but the Frape Team saved a copy – for future use, and you’ve made a hames of it) I know what is in it, but you see – quoting a line here or there isn’t giving the context of the debate that was going on now does it?

What if someone wrote “you struggle opening the bottle?” followed almost immediately by “Yeah “clockwise and anti-clockwise” for adults. But for children and people of low intelligence we use the other.”

How would you react to that?

As I say – save this conversation – you might need to refer to it in 8 months. The difference of course is that you’re actually in the thread this time. Maybe pass a copy to the rest of the ‘team’ in the Frape Room.

          5. Cian

Tell me one thing. Why did you make *that* comment on my original post?

It’s the Wednesdays Papers page. I highlighted a SF proposal from yesterday. I even said it was good. I provided some relevant news.

You choose to respond with a Noonan jibe; and then sneered at “my” ministers. Why?

          6. GiggidyGoo

Somehow, Cian, I doubt you were trying to attract kudos for SF for posting it. The second comment was the type of reaction you were hoping for. You got it. You got from me a comment that brought the train of thought back to reality. A jibe at Noonan doesn’t cost me a thought. I’ve experience of him a while ago when he was a guest speaker at a sports club in Limerick – he compared Terry Leyden to Bin Laden. That was my first experience of him. A coward, playing to the gallery. His record ever since had been a disaster. I make no apologies pointing out the nonsense that you and a few other scribes here write about SF and their fiscal knowledge, by giving an example of how they corrected a so-called Finance Minister (a guy who made people poor in this country, and had a notorious record as Health Minister.

And, Cian – they are your dolly mixture of ministers, as you’re on here defending them constantly (with the odd little slap on the wrist for them of course, as cover)

Your last post is the usual – were my points difficult to address, that you had to go into divert mode?

          7. Cian

Somehow, Cian, I doubt you were trying to attract kudos for SF for posting it. The second comment was the type of reaction you were hoping for. You got it.
I can’t win. *You* are the arbitrator for what I do and post. *you* view everything through a anti-FG-glasses and make everything about them.

            You got from me a comment that brought the train of thought back to reality. […Noonan…blah.. blah] dirert; divert; divert;
I make no apologies pointing out the nonsense that you and a few other scribes here write about SF and their fiscal knowledge, by giving an example of how they corrected a so-called Finance Minister
Noonan got it wrong. SF corrected him once. Pointing out one error doesn’t t magically make all of SF fiscal wizards.

            […Noonan…blah.. blah] zzzZZZz

And, Cian – they are your dolly mixture of ministers, as you’re on here defending them constantly (with the odd little slap on the wrist for them of course, as cover)
            Again. In *your* head.

Your last post is the usual – were my points difficult to address, that you had to go into divert mode?
So if you divert the conversation I *must* answer your diversions; but you can ignore the main points? How does that work?
Anyway it was all stuff about “frape rooms”. This is more stuff *you* are projecting onto me. I literally can’t address these imaginary points. You are making stuff up.
The rest was you diverting from stuff you wrote last year – telling me it was out of context. Haha.

          8. GiggidyGoo

The ‘ha ha’ doesn’t work Cian. The italics don’t work Cian.
You chose to pick quotations out of context. You wouldn’t put the link to the conversation, hoping you would get away with a half baked attempt at twisting and diversion (as is normal for you).
But the telling aspect is that you quoted selective lines from a thread eight months old that you hadn’t contributed to that were out of context to try prove some point. How’s that for a ‘ha ha’? How’s that for diversion from my valid points. How’s that for immaturity? No confidence in yourself obviously, or in your FG Frape Room mateys?
You asked a couple of questions. Not my problem if you don’t like the answers.

I see you steered away from answering my “What if someone wrote “you struggle opening the bottle?” followed almost immediately by “Yeah “clockwise and anti-clockwise” for adults. But for children and people of low intelligence we use the other.”
Now why would that be Cian? Can you answer that without a LOL or ha ha, or italics?

          9. Cian

Tell me how are the quotations out of context?

Your reply to my first post here was an attack on the messenger.

You have repeatedly said that you don’t do that; and you dislike people that do.

The context of the quotes was to show that you are a hypocrite. How is that out of context?

The icing on the cake is that in *each* of your replies here you have continued to attack me. You are showing again and again that you are a hypocrite. You also keep trying to deflect things, and then complain that I won’t follow your deflection. Yes, I ignored your *deflection* attempt about things I said. This isn’t about *me*. It is about *you*. *Your* lies and *your* hypocrisy. If you want to start a different thread about me – go ahead.

          10. GiggidyGoo

Funny isn’t. I answer your questions. I explain. You pick quotations from an 8 month old thread that were in the context of that thread only, and you apply them to this thread.
You see, you made this thread about you by a writing a supposedly innocuous post, fishing for an anti SF reply, which you got straight away, and you were hoping to get a pro SF opinion. What you got was something which pulled the rug from under your fishing.
Once you go to a saved text, eight months old, on a completely different subject, you revealed the depths FG will stoop to try deflect. It must have been eating you up for 8 months, and you needed to produce it – and made quite a hames of it.

With each post you write, you make it more about you.

And of course you wouldn’t answer my question. A little deflection once again. Was the quotation out of context Cian – sauce for the goose Cian?

          11. Cian

            You’re delusional.

I’ll let you have the last word:
There’s a tendency here to attack the person posting and disregard the content of the post and produce a label for the poster.

          12. GiggidyGoo

Good man Cian. The smell of burning rubber is appalling as you hastily make your retreat with another out of context phrase. I’ll certainly save this thread for future reference.

In the meantime, your absence is notable on the Grace item. Cat got your tongue?

When is the government going to act about all these bogus claims? It is gone way beyond a joke. I was watching a YouTube video about Gerry Hutch recently, he was asked where he got all his money from. He said he started off with some claims he got. The ridiculous amounts that are given out in payments is completely encouraging people to make up and manufacture incidents. I’ve read a few times that €15,000 is around the average for a whiplash claim (compared to about €3,000 in UK for example). The number of cases where judges have awarded crazy payouts, I’ve lost count. There was one where someone was awarded I think €76,000 when a teapot she bought in Dunnes Stores exploded. This might sound funny. Who do you think is paying the €76,000? It’s not the insurance company, it’s us, the insurance companies obviously hike premiums to ensure they’re making profits. Same goes for small businesses. The town I live in, Carrick on Shannon, 7 small businesses closed down in a one week period last year. I’m not saying high insurance costs were to blame for all closures, but I’d be fairly certain it had a large part to play. Why can’t the government slash payouts on claims, they are encouraging dishonesty. Only for social media, the case in todays Independent would have succeeded, how many have been successful, tens of thousands easily I’d say.
Why can’t some minister, similar to Mary with smokeless coal in the 1990’s, change the system totally. The benefits would be enormous.

..i get that a lot my stuff is of no interest as its yank and NY-no need for snarky comments Rob-but today at noon this is very important to the entire cannabis industry in North America and it affects Irl,its a little inside the beltway and involves allegations of abuse of power.

…no one really cares about Roger Stone or Flynn-but they really really do care about this as many republicans in Colorado/Oregon/Cali have been champions of legalization.

Full Committee Hearing on Oversight of the Department of Justice:

-this is called or know as an abuse of power-may lead his resignation…

“Barr personally ordered the antitrust division to undertake lengthy merger reviews of 10 cannabis deals, including the $682 million merger between MedMen and PharmaCann that was later terminated because of regulatory delays.

“Rejecting the analysis of career staff, Attorney General Barr ordered the Antitrust Division to issue Second Request subpoenas,” Elias said, referring to the in-depth merger reviews undertaken by the antitrust division in cases where a deal raises antitrust concerns. “The rationale for doing so centered not on an antitrust analysis, but because he did not like the nature of their underlying business.”

The investigations into cannabis deals required the companies to turn over thousands or millions of documents, and at one point accounted for five out of the eight active investigations at the agency, he said.”

It affects Ireland in that two of the three licensed companies are active in US-they have been hobbled by a rogue AG.
