Bacik Crazy?

at

Only a judge (actually three) can decide.

This afternoon.

The High Court, Dublin.

Labour senator Ivana Bacik (above and top) – representing a group of ten senators who are taking action to find out if the  Seanad can sit  without the next taoiseach’s nominees – arrives for a specially convened hearing.

The State argues it cannot sit until all 60 members are appointed.

Via RTÉ:

The outcome of the case will be significant if a government is not formed this weekend as legislation for terrorist and gangland crime – including the operation of the Special Criminal Court – needs to be renewed by next Monday or it will lapse.

The case is being heard by three judges of the High Court, including the President of the court Ms Justice Mary Irvine.

More as we get it.

It really is. What a waste of time. Every part of it. Not that I’m one to comment, but age has not been kind.

I am not sure that the State’s argument holds up. There have been occasions when a number of seats are not filled, due to death or otherwise of a Senator. Some of those have taken months to fill. Yet the Senate was still able to operate.

Nah. Won’t wash. Some of the best legal minds . . . Michael McDowell . . .good luck with that.

In places where social distancing is not possible which is not the case in either of those photos.

Social distancing – have you even questioned how or when that term occurred? We have 2m which has no scientific basis to be reduced to 1m shortly- for a virus which has less fatality than the normal flu and- where most of us have already been exposed.

Now if you don’t believe that then fine but nobody can live on €350 a week while paying rent so watch the state sector employees rush to the shops once they open- good for them- they can afford it as they have spare cash but non union will become homeless.

State sector employees who’ve been working for the last 3 months as usual, earning their weekly/fortnightly wage? Not just the frontline staff either, the desk jockeys in the department offices too. We haven’t just been sitting on our hoops at home doing nothing on full wages.

By the way, check out http://www.publicjobs.ie for all your state sector employment needs.

            I agree- frig all.

soq has a chip on his shoulder about everything these days

don’t bother engaging, daisy, it’s not worth your energy

Wouldn’t bother. Smug panel interviewing tens of candidates – who have already passed an exam – for one job. Waste of everyone’s time.

  3. Truth in the News

The Senate is made of 60 members of which eleven are nominated and can’t be until
a new Head of Government obtains a majority in the Dail, in effect it is not a properly
functioning assembly with its full membership,, and as such has no constitutional
power to approve or decide anything, whats the need to bike it down to the Four Courts
to find out, is not Bacik an eminent Professor of law in TCD, there are lot more pressing
issues she could ask the Judges for an opinion on given the Party she belongs to
espouses views on social justice and rights of man and woman……and the SCC should
have been abolished years ago…….another relic of Devs and his Offences against the
State, what about a replacement with “Offences against the People” to do deal with political
    corruption and mal adminstration

You mean the country has been functioning without the Senate this whole time?!

    Hard to credit…
