Everyone is waiting for the Sunday Independent and if there’s anymore to the Cowen story. The other papers missed the boat.

    1. Mig Eater

      Who?

Oh. I do hope he didn’t visit the U.S. or plan to, without filling in that visa form properly. The last thing the yanks want on 4th July is some boozed up Irish politician. Leave it to March 17.

    2. Politico

Hugh O’Connell writing in the Sindo has it: “Agriculture Minister Barry Cowen has admitted he should not have been driving on a learner permit when he was banned for drink-driving four years ago.”

    3. Denny

      The big story is
Was that lab the source of covid 19 and also why it was covered up If it’s true?

Billions lost in income for all of us as a result of this pandemic millions unemployed and is it a case China is calling the shots.?

Many people have died many families wrecked many children will not get proper education due to schools closed.?
How many thousand cancer patients will die because they could not access cancer treatments.?

Seems trump the most despised idiot in the world was bang on the money or is the times telling lies

  2. Charger Salmons

    Everyone ?
I heard no-one discussing it in the pub tonight.
Not sure a relatively minor motoring offence that didn’t require a court appearance when it happened four years ago registered on anyone’s radar.
Another example of what the Leinster House media bubble and social media think is important doesn’t really bother the general public that much.

      1. Mig Eater

That’s him barred from NY then.

In other news … there is none – is the Irish Mail on Sunday THAT stuck for a front page?

        And

I only just learned how to pronounce “Ghislaine” – apparently the “S” is silent. I thought she was named after a submarine base in Scotland. Thank you Channel 4 news.

        1. Janet, dreams of big guns

A French name that is derived from the Old German ‘gisil’ which means pledge.

          1. Matt Pilates

Knew a Gisela from Germany, lovely lady, strong willed. Knew a Guylene from France too. A real looker. Plenty of fire there too.

            Luckily they never met.

            AFAIK.

      2. ReproBertie

        That’s not true Kate.

“If you hold a valid licence/permit at the time of the offence and your alcohol level is below a certain limit, you will be issued with a fixed penalty notice. If you pay the fine stated on the notice within 28 days, the additional penalty stated on the notice will be imposed but you will not have to go to court.”

        https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driving_offences/drink_driving_offences_in_ireland.html

I have to agree with Spoofer there. This is a total non-story.

          1. ReproBertie

The amendment is for experienced drivers. Look further and you’ll see the 3 month ban for “other drivers” doesn’t mention the 2018 amendment and has a lower threshold. That’s people on learner permits, no?

What’s dirty politics about someone getting caught drink driving and paying the penalty? Or do you mean the attempts to make something out of it?

    1. Politico

@Charger Salmons, he was also on a learner permit. Oh and by the way, you obviously didn’t have much of a time at the pub if you’re on here and able to write! There’s nothing minor about drink-driving.

      1. Charger Salmons

        @Politico.
If the police and Mr Cowen had somehow conspired to produce a lesser sentence because of his position as a TD it would indeed be a worthwhile story.
But he was treated no differently than anyone else which indicates to me that you’re ignorant about the law in force at the time of the incident.
The fact that you also think a visit to the pub should always render someone incapable of the ability to communicate coherently is another worry.
A person of lesser integrity than myself might be tempted to engage in scurrilous national stereotyping of the Irish and their relationship with alcohol.
        Heaven forbid.

        1. Brother Barnabas

seems to have rendered you incapable of differentiating between an object and a reflexive pronoun

I wont go so low as to indulge in scurrilous stereotypes about brits and their education

          1. Charger Salmons

            Oh,the irony.
Still unable to use capital letters, apostrophes and full stops whilst lecturing about education standards.
            Whoosh !

          2. Brother Barnabas

yeah, except that’s not what ‘irony’ means

            doh!

(unless we’re talking in the alanis morissette sense; then you’re bang ship shape!)

            heh heh heh

          3. Brother Barnabas

I dont look at the links you post, charger

we dont share the same interests

            try SOQ

    2. Politico

@Charger Salmons how about this headline so? It’s in The Irish Sun: DEVASTATED DAD Barry Cowen’s drink-driving ban a ‘slap in the face’ to families of road victims, says Dad of girl killed by motorist

      1. Charger Salmons

If you’re relying on the Sun to provide you with moral ammunition you’re on a sticky wicket old pal

      2. Charger Salmons

And of course the headline fails to make clear that the unfortunate girl who died in the accident was killed by a motorist – who’d been convicted of drink-driving a year earlier.
The reality is, as the Sun makes clear, Mr Cowen wasn’t considered sufficiently intoxicated to warrant a court appearance.
And it happened four years ago.

          1. Janet, dreams of big guns

while you are ALWAYS there to put Giddy right I agree with your point, we were all children ourselves, that’s enough (and I’m the last person to defend Giddy on many topics, I hate to see it get personal between people on here, there’s a whole person behind every Avatar not just the one who’s tone and meaning we get to Inger on here,
for example Rob I’d guess you were a late middle aged man, fairly set in his ways and slightly bitter with a hatred of anyone you perceive not to be working hard so someone fairly entrenched in the unspoken Irish “class” system but probably only a few generations off the farm yourself but Im probably way off the mark,
I’m sure you’re a nice man and you Giddy and I while having different views would probably have a nice time over a socially distanced pint,
can we give the biatcjin a rest for the weekend everyone,

          2. GiggidyGoo

Had some last night Janet. The plastic dividers kill the atmosphere though.

I’m sure if you were being attacked here, you’d retaliate?

And yes, i’m sure we could have a pleasant time over a drink.

          3. Janet, dreams of big guns

yeah it’s just a bit of a circle at this stage,
hope you enjoyed the pints none the less !

          4. SOQ

@ Gigs- the old pubs that never took away the partitions between tables are laughing now eh?

          5. GiggidyGoo

SOQ. Those old pubs really had character. The partitions were mostly wood and glass. Might be a nice business opportunity, making wooden and glass or perspex dividers to make it look better than just plastic.

          6. SOQ

Well is they were plastic from floor to top with a rounded edge they could actually give a sense of space but it’s the cheap tacky wood which makes them look like they don’t belong.

          7. Rob_G

            @Janet

As is par for the course with you, you are wrong on several levels.

I probably wouldn’t want to go for a drink with someone as passive-aggressive as you, tbh.

          8. Janet, dreams of big guns

sorry you took it that way
maybe it’s the inference I was talking about
            maybe I hit a nerve
either way jumping up someone’s ass everytime they comment is just straight up aggressive

          9. Janet, dreams of big guns

also I’m glad my sketch of you based on my reading of your comments is incorrect, kind of proves my point how you can read into a person’s comments on here enough to dislike them and bully them as you seem to be set on doing with Giddy,
that was all I was trying to illustrate,
but I’m not here to police anyone I’m just fed up with the biatcjin I guess, call me old fashioned

          10. Rob_G

Whatever. Giggidy commented something I disagreed with, so I just told him that, and why I disagreed with it, without any resort to pop-psychology babble.

For example Janet, from reading your posts, I’d guess that you are a 30-ish woman with notions of grandeur above the average monoglot Angophone because you’ve lived on “the continent”, and can’t debate any subject coherently without becoming somewhat hysterical and resorting to emotive attacks on your opponent’s character.

But well, what would I know.

          11. Janet, dreams of big guns

oh I enjoyed that :) genuinely particularly the ideas above my station bit, very Irish of you, thanks for knocking a few years off, if you read my comments as hysterical again that’s the tone you choose to,
I was just trying to point out you seem to have it in for Giddy, you comment on almost every he/she says, I’m not the first to say it to you either,
no need to get wound up ;)

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

What difference would it make one way or another? If it helps, I have friends who were raped by a priest and the same trolls going for O’Connor’s neck are the types who probably rejoiced that they went to mass this morning and put a fiver in the plate to support the priests who got away with abusing kids.

  3. Politico

Has the Road Safety Authority been disbanded? Is it still around? Their silence has been deafening. Who’s in charge of it now?

    1. ReproBertie

Four years ago a man was caught drink driving and paid the penalty. Other than welcoming the outcome what would you have the RSA say?

      1. Charger Salmons

        It’s the new Puritanism.
It’s not sufficient to punish somebody once – they need to be found guilty in the court of public opinion as well.
I rather think Mehole’s Uriah Heep reaction is an indication of things to come.
Just another hack politician scared witless by the social media mob.

  4. Charger Salmons

Funnily enough the names Hazel Chu, Roderic O’Gorman or Peter Tatchell didn’t come up in conversation in the pub last night either.
In fact politics rarely reared its ugly head.
I get the impression people are heartily sick of the lot of them.
What really ticked most locals off was not the table service or social distancing but having to go through the ludicrous pretence of buying a €9 meal.
That, much more than some Gay Pride malarkey, is really what gets on people’s wick.

      1. Charger Salmons

        Any pub is.
That’s why the media and politicians get it wrong so often.
They only talk to each other instead of listening to what’s hacking off the people who pay their salaries.
Trump as POTUS, Brexit, Boris as PM, the anger over water charges, the rise of Sinn Fein.
They failed to predict any of them.

    1. ReproBertie

Good God Spoofer, with all this pub conversation I hope you weren’t flouting the guidelines and mixing outside the group you arrived with.

There was a piece in yesterday’s Irish Times about Enchrochat which might be of interest to you. It looks like the Garda either got very little actionable information or are playing their cards very close to their chest.

  5. Charger Salmons

Actually I raised a glass to the memory of a great man last night.
Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of England’s semi-final defeat to West Germany in Italia ’90 before they went on to defeat Argentina in the Final.
A great match that had everything that makes footy so great – passion, drama, heartache and no VAR.
And the bloody Germans beating us on spotters again – Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle with two shockers.
But the image that remains seared in every England fan’s memory is Gazza in tears after his booking when he released he couldn’t make the final.
And the magnificent Sir Bobby Robson consoling the flawed mercurial talent.
It’s right up there with they think it’s all over and Gordon Banks’ save.
Sir Bobby was a great man cruelly maligned by the English media but without suffering bitterness or rancour about his treatment at their hands.
And for the fans ? There’s always a week today next year to be disappointed again.
C’mon Sir Harry of Kane.Do it for Engerland my son.

    1. scottser

Sir Harry is sadly past his prime at 26, and destined to remain trophyless. He won’t even be able to to do a Sheringham anywhere else; who could afford his transfer plus whatever outrageous salary he would want?

Bobby Robson was a gent. You’d almost forgive him for giving the Jose Mourinho to the world. Almost.

      1. Charger Salmons

        Everything is relative.
Jamie Vardy scored his 100th PL goal this week and he didn’t start playing in the top flight until around the age Harry is now.
If he can remain injury-free and with a bit of luck who knows what will happen in a year’s time.
Southgate has got a decent enough squad of youngsters and Mason Greenwood is developing nicely.
A fellow can only dream but I’ll not be making any rash predictions.
And Sir Bobby really was the real deal.Even nicer in real life than on the tellybox.

        1. Brother Barnabas

you’re quite right about bobby robson, charger. a gentleman to his core. and, yes, it was shameful how maligned he was in his own homeland. in contrast, he was both revered and adored in spain, where the mere mention of his name introduces an air of nostalgic grace to proceedings – whether barca fans, madrid fans or any in between. says a lot about the brits and the sort of qualities they admire and appreciate. boris johnson, eh!?

          1. Charger Salmons

I do like the way you presume to talk on behalf of all Spanish people.
And here was me thinking you never ventured further than the Fuengirola Irish bar Happy Hour.
A cheeky 6/10 on the WINKY-WOOometer for you my man but only because I’m in a generous mood this fine Sunday lunchtime and you’ve at least made some attempt at using punctuation.

          2. MaryLou's ArmaLite

Bobby couldn’t remember peoples names, mixed people up, couldn’t remember who the opponent’s were, and the press laughed at him for it, but it didn’t matter, he understood football and his players enjoyed playing for him. England didn’t realize what they had until he left.

Alan Shearer is a Geordie legend, but Bobby Robson is a the one they pray to.

  6. GiggidyGoo

There’s Heather Humphries, engaging in the usual FG pastime of intervening is legal matters on behalf stalwarts of the community.

Best-selling children’s author Gillian Phillip is sacked – after adding hashtag ‘I stand with JK Rowling’ to her Twitter handle amid bitter row over transgender rights

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8490821/Best-selling-childrens-author-sacked-posting-hashtag-stand-JK-Rowling-Twitter.html

Cancel couture in full flight so- what is wrong with these people? If anyone thinks that this sort of vicious bullying and witch hunting is in anyway helping transgender people, they are seriously deluded. As the saying goes- Nazis come in many forms.

    1. Nigel

If someone who was a member of the Nazi Party in 1930s Germany was fired because of their opinions about the Jews, then the person who did the firing was the real vicious bullying Nazi who was seriously deluded if they thought they were helping Jewish people.

      1. SOQ

Seriously Nigel- do not even try to defend this.

People getting hounded out of their jobs because they voiced the wrong ‘opinion’ by a bunch of faceless cowards on Twitter. Since when did free speech become such a problem for the left eh? Since when did open honest intelligent nuanced debate become such a threat?

The only thing that should be cancelled is them- scumbags of the highest order.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5TVLEaqqdI

        1. Nigel

Since when did people having horrible, hateful opinuons mean they were shielded from consequences? Why is their freedom of speech more inportant than anyone else’s, not to mention freedom of association?

          1. Nigel

It depends? If they’re homophobic, antisemitic, transphobic, racist – should these things be consequence-free or should they be protected more than the people they hate?

          2. Clampers Outside

“depends” = yes I do, when it goes against the socjus authoritarianism that must be abided by.

          3. Nigel

Scottser I hope it doesn’t happen but with all the red flags she’s flying, she’s on her way to becoming the new Linehan.

          4. Clampers Outside

These last three comments Nigel… spoken like a true believer in social justice authoritarianism.

Laughable, if it weren’t for the fact of its exorcism and resulting consequences. You are an advocate of cancel culture, that much is crystal clear. You are an authoritarian, a hater of free speech, fact.

          5. Clampers Outside

Circular nonsense. Her speech is not stopping someone else’s speech.
Her speech is pro-JK’s piece. That doesn’t prevent others talking. In fact it is engaging the conversation, the debate, showing a side of the debate one uson, nothing more. But it is the other side who want to shut down that engagement through cancel culture. That’s a demonstrable fact.

          6. Clampers Outside

That’s in response to Nigel’s comment that starts with “Since when did people…”

          7. SOQ

So if a person who is actually transgender states that they agree with JK Rowling, of which there are plenty- it is presumably acceptable to hound them out of their employment too?

That is where it really comes full circle.

People who are not transgender hounding transgenders out of employed because they do not hold the RIGHT opinion on Trans politics- absolute friggen morons.

          8. Nigel

And if trans people disagree with her it’s acceptable to call them the new Nazis, even though trans people were actual victims of the Nazis.

          9. SOQ

In the main, it is not transgender people who are doing the hounding sweetheart.

Do you agree with people being hounded out of their jobs Nigel? Y/N

      2. Clampers Outside

One ‘of’ instead of ‘have’ I can let go…. but feckin’ three in the one comment had me tongue tied, damn it!

The “Agent Orange” pun on the cover of the Sunday Times is in very poor taste. The chemical weapon used by the US in Vietnam which has had such devastating consequences for generations of Vietnamese people.

Imagine if they had a pun about Zyklon B on their front cover. There would be absolute uproar about it

    1. Johnny

…i doubt anyone would get it, now 350,000 to live on a terrace in Nass there should be uproar over that !

    1. Brother Barnabas

genuine question, charger: why are you all so upset about a fellow choosing to follow his own path? what harm?

      1. Charger Salmons

        Upset ?
You’re really trying too hard again today Brother.
In fact you’ve not been your usual self for quite a while now.
Go and have a lie down in your hammock. You’ll feel better.

        1. Brother Barnabas

i’m in the hammock right now !

you posted quite a few links to various do-nothings ridiculing and criticising harry mountbatten-windsor’s decision to head off to sunnier climes with his hot wife rather than spend his days pottering about with stuffy old fools in drafty country houses, making the odd appearance at some provincial town’s community centre pretending to give a poop about the downtrodden subjects’ dreary lives

        I know.Strange.
Frontline staff have been using it since the beginning of the pandemic.
Does anyone really trust the WHO at this stage after they colluded with China ?

          1. Clampers Outside

What’s the ML sense? I missed that first time around… I was out that day… Or something :)

      2. f_lawless

The HCQ trials which were set up by the WHO have been criticised by different medical experts, in that:

        – the patients selected for trial were in a too-advanced stage of disease for the drug to be of value
        – the patients were administered such high levels of the drug as to be considered toxic

To conclude that the trials may have been deliberately “set up to fail” has dark implications. Of course for the average person, It would be morally abhorrent to treat human life in such a callous way. But then again, they say that the kinds of people who rise to the top of corporations often have psychopathic tendencies and aren’t bound by any moral code in the search for profit.

And it’s worth remembering that the WHO have a track history of acting under the influence of pharmaceutical corporations.A decade ago, prominent WHO scientists who had campaigned to get countries to stockpile billions worth of of vaccines and drugs for the swine flu pandemic (which never materialised in the end), were later investigated by the Council of Europe and found to have been under the sponsorship of different pharmaceutical corporations. The recent Lancet scandal is another indication that these corporations continue to influence WHO policy

I think this is worth reading:
