Surely, the scoop by the Daily Star is the important one – Diana’s ghost.

      1. Cú Chulainn

Big news for sure. I expect her ghost will keep the psycho pigeons and killer rats at bay, which is even better news.

That is why England has been nothing (in soccer terms) since 1966.

          1. Charger Salmons

            Regular qualifiers though.
You gotta be in it to win it.
Imagine, there are grown men walking around in Ireland who’ve never had the chance to wear a leprechaun hat and ginger wig during a world cup.
            Heh x 18 years.

Your constant comparisons of the modern day Ireland and England soccer teams stinks of your insecurities. England has so many more players, much better training facilities and so much more investment that it’s about as realistic a comparison as the current Dublin and London GAA teams. The main difference, of course, being that despite the massive weight of advantage on England’s side, Ireland can hold their own against England and have been known to come out on top, something a London side would never manage against Dublin.

Yes, qualification is a rare and wonderful thing for an Ireland team, but an rud is annamh is iontach, and it’s that very rarity that makes a night like Stuttgart 88 such a euphoric moment and something you, despite England’s qualification record, will never understand or experience. For that you have my sympathy.

Didn’t take you long to start sneering again charger. You can’t even let someone pay respects to the man without pissing all over it. For someone who witters on about class, you have absolutely none.

          4. GiggidyGoo

There’s grown bean savages all over the UK who use 1966 as their PIN. You can see them diligently putting it into the card machines at the Little Chefs.

Will people just stop rising to this Thatherite troll ffs….seriously…i cant believe it’s still being given oxygen.

It’s ok to feed him some crumbs every so often to keep him going. The fact is that he thinks he’s winding people up, but actually he’s been wound up by getting a little attention every so often, and in return spends a great deal of his time posting inane comments on a website. This is how he chooses to live his life. The man lives for this. Think of him like our own little performing monkey in a cage. I know that it’s cruel to encourage him, but sometimes life is cruel.

        1. Janet, dreams of big guns

ha I like this analogy, can I add the monkey regularly sh*yes in his hands and claps,
can we not teach him cuter tricks like standing to the National anthem,

It might be a valid story but is the City Journal a RWNJ rag? Its OK, I checked:
The magazine is published by the conservative Manhattan Institute for Policy Research.

We’ve really gone through the looking-glass on this one. Front page of the online Irish Times, currently:

    – a headline that says non-wearers of masks on public transport will face fines and jail sentences
    – main photo: front of a bus reads : “Wear a Face Cover”; through the window, a woman sits alone on a bus wearing a mask.

    Feels like totalitarian state propaganda.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/coronavirus-two-more-deaths-confirmed-amid-concern-over-new-clusters-1.4302508

“’The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said the wearing of masks on public transport is a sign of solidarity to your friends and family, your health service and their staff who continue to be at the frontline of this crisis and solidarity to your country as we all continue in our efforts to suppress this disease.”

Continue to be at the front line of this crisis? Deaths continue to be at virtually zero. Ordering the nation to wear masks now is like polishing the knobs on the stable door long after the horse has bolted.

We’re now in the damage control phase of the narrative. As the lockdown is eased, the government will now claim that, due to mask wearing, we’ve managed to transition without the virus taking hold again. Avoiding an “emperor has no clothes” moment is a priority. Don’t want to public to start questioning whether the lockdown was ever necessary in the first place.

To reinforce this Eamon Ryan says “there had generally speaking been a good level of compliance on public transport with the wearing of mask” which is simply not true – from what I’ve observed myself and the experience of those I’ve spoken to. Easily less than half the people on transport have been wearing masks throughout this affair to date.

    1. Clampers Outside

I take your point f_, but wouldn’t it be good to encourage mask wearing now, ahead of a second phase/outbreak.
Rather than encouraging it when it does* hit.

      * or ‘if’ it does.

          1. Charlie

That’s a fantastic idea. Now the rest of the planet can not only hear y’all comin before crossing to the other side of the street but see you too. The perfect beacon.

        1. Joe F

I asked you yesterday how many time England won, were runners up in World Cup and European Championships. I took the liberty of looking it up old boy. There have been 21 World Cups and 15 European Championships. England have won World Cup, no other appearance. Never even made it to European Final. That’s very good old boy for a country of circa 60 million. On the other hand Germany have won 4 World Cups, runners up 4 other times, won EC 3 times, runners up 3 more times. Italy won WC 4 times, runners up 2 times, won EC once, runner up twice. France WC wins 2, runners up 1, EC winners 2, runners up 1. Spain, ….I think you get the picture old boy. England WC 1 win, runner up 0, EC win 0, runner up 0. I rest my case old boy.

          1. GiggidyGoo

And it doesn’t say much for the country’s success at the sport – the country that invented soccer.

          2. Mé Féin

An interesting correlation to look up is the countries that ever only won once — while they were hosts. Not real winners in my book.

    2. ReproBertie

We’re at about 1 new case per hour over the last 3 days. As more people take to public transport it makes sense to take extra precautions.

    3. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Australia had no deaths for weeks, close to zero cases outside quarantine for weeks, then it changed. We have had 1500 new cases in a week. Melbourne is back in lockdown. Make the most of the current situation in Ireland. I think it will get back out of control unless people take it seriously, Making it mandatory will encourage compliance.

      1. harrold

Flights from pandemic hotspots will hot help Also unchecked

If and when a spike happens we can place the blame exactly when it belongs with government pandering to airlines

    4. SOQ

One of the biggest critics of face masks is Dr. Marcus De Brun @indepdubnrth. He states that it is a seasonal virus and come next season, less people will be immune because of them. He points to Sweden where there is neither social distancing nor face masks. He also challenges the wisdom of using the death per million statistic as some countries have a higher over 65 population that others and on that basis, Sweden actually has a lower fatality rate than Ireland.

“CSO inform 92% of all Covid deaths are over 65yrs old. As of today Ireland has had 238 deaths per 100k over 65yr olds. Sweden have had 248 deaths per 100k over 65yr olds.Sweden have had no lockdown, no economic collapse, no mask rules. Just natural immunity and common sense”.

People are transfixed by the fear porn, they prefer being controlled it seems, like some weird sadistic Stockholm syndrome?
I bet you didn’t hear about the hundreds of Front-line public servants who returned from Paddy’s day celebrations in NY and other US cities, did NOT quarantine then returned to work after only 3 days instead of the required 14 days? Remember Ireland hit peak Covid 19 at the end of March and early April, 2 weeks after these guys were infecting everyone.
Let’s be honest, our Lockdown was a shambles, especially with regards to quarantine.

      2. f_lawless

Ivor Cummins has been doing some good data analysis.
        https://twitter.com/FatEmperor/status/1282283957736878080

Empirical effectiveness of mask interventions, and a question: “Does Empirical Science Matter Anymore?”

In this short video he takes the examples of Germany, Austria and Poland who all introduced mandatory mask wearing back in April. Despite this, as the data demonstrates, no observable impact was made on the infection rate in those countries after the point at which the mask wearing was introduced..

        1. SOQ

Apparently fear emotions bypass certain circuits in the brain which somewhat explains why people are so willing to accept this nonsense without any evidence of its efficacy.

          1. SOQ

Just on this point- if masks are to be compulsory on public transport then surely it is up to the transport providers to provide them? Once off in the bin- clean and safe.

Also: should there not some exemptions for like COPD and anxiety based disorders before the Gardaí start weighing in?

Who knows: maybe disability rights is just a thing of the past these days- nothing would surprise me anymore.

  2. Gabby

People using public transport should be in compliance with the Laws of Commonsense intended to reinforce an ideal mentioned half a dozen times in the Constitution i.e. the common good.

  3. Janet, dreams of big guns

nice to see the boys in government planning to buy up the Airbnb apartments, heavens forbid someone looses on an investment that helped gouge the soul out of the city, that rental prices should drop or become more available, that anyone who isn’t at the top of the dung hill should get a fair deal, they really are a shower of elitist protectionist cunxs

    1. GiggidyGoo

That story is a load of waffle Janet. It’s just a case of a minister coming out with a statement to try justify him being in the position they are, without an iota of sense to support his appointment. Each minister will get their turn.

The cheaper way to go about solving housing is for the state to build. It’s cheaper to build a street of 20 houses than to buy 10.

        1. italia'90

Only second hand houses that have good transport links, public services and a high energy rating (even after purchase retro fitting as a contractual clause would be acceptable) and you have my vote.
Many houses in the suburbs that were built in the 60’s & 70’s could be converted into 2 residences with a small extension and small upgrades. these houses are usually occupied by an old couple or single pensioner who might like to live in a modern, warmer more secure community?

ballons ah no we going lay pipe like in the 1980’s its more expensive……think the fees!

FT has deep dive into Loon-best I could find non paywall FT at bottom.

“Floating 12 miles above the earth, high above commercial aircraft, internet balloons offer the possibility of online connection for hundreds of millions of people living in emerging markets. Loon, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, has launched its first commercial project in Kenya. Success will lead more countries to seek a deal.
Loon has already proved that its polyethylene, solar-powered helium balloons work by providing internet access to hurricane-hit Puerto Rico. Kenya is a test of whether the service can be profitable. Cheaper than digging cables, the balloons use algorithms to navigate air currents and stay in one place, beaming 4G internet signals down to remote areas. ”

Spurs beat Arsenal but England lose to the Windies.
A score draw sort of day.

    1. Joe F

You seem to have stopped bleating on about the World Cup 54 years ago old boy. When you read the post I had earlier comparing England’s success rate at World Cup and European Championships, even you, old boy can’t put any spin on that.

  6. harrold

Joe England won a world cup

And it took an English man who was part of that team in 1966 to bring Ireland to qualify for the world cup

And ad I remember jack was not treated well when the waves parted

    1. Joe F

You’ve obviously not read old boy’s (Charger Salmon) posts. I said in a previous post Jack was a fine Englishman and was a credit to his country. Charger is a clown, bleating on about how superior England is to the rest of the world, never speaks negatively about Boris, etc. It smacks so much of an inferiority complex he has it’s not funny! Poor old boy.
