Boxty Flattened

The Boxty House in Temple Bar, Dublin in 2012

This afternoon.

“On Thursday, we did 24 covers in total. On Friday we did six covers, normally I’d do 400,” says owner Pádraig Óg Gallagher.

I had forecast to do possibly about 200 covers over the four days, Thursday to Sunday; that was what I was banking on doing. We had staff back in and we were there twidling our thumbs. It’s soul destroying.

The wages of those who have to work in the tourist trap of temple bar are soul destroying.

A tourist trap looking to fleece gullible foreigners with a load of leprechauny hokum, cry me a river.

Not enough tourists to chance their arm with

Their entire model relies on the one off / never again clientele

    Massively overpriced
And the atmosphere of a busy unkempt student bar

Was there in mid February, I wouldn’t have minded the poor service or the prices if the food was good, or unique
    But it was mortifying

Dull, bland, and even had a feel they were taking the p1ss
Like mocking the diner thinking they were getting an Irish dining experience

No. There’s better stews and corned beef dinners on the old road onto Thurles

Switching to a ‘cloud’ kitchen is interesting-Karma Kitchen, a London-based startup just raised £252 million (about $317 million) for a Series A last week, after seeking 3 million !

That’s a very old photo of the Boxty house. Hasn’t looked like that for a long time.

Good riddance. The only authentic place in TB is Rory’s tackle shop.

It seems strange that anyone should wish good riddance to something that provides employment and attracts tourists.
Like it or not Ireland’s entire tourist industry is built around a pastiche of real life.
When this country plunges into a prolonged recession and unemployment skyrockets later this year I wonder if people will be so dismissive of the things that bring so many visitors and jobs to Ireland.
You’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Relax, the Brazilian and Chilean language student staff there have moved on.

No Irish people were hurt in the making of this decision.

…can any of you jackeens tell me the difference between boxty and potato cake/bread?

    1. Redundant Proofreaders Society

It uses raw potato as well as cooked, so more of a rosti than a farl. Its origins are the North West and North Midlands.

      1. Paulus

Indeed RPS; boxty essentially uses grated raw potato. Potato bread was a way of using up left-over cooked potato. My own preferance was potato bread, still warm with plenty of butter.
        A very under-appreciated treat.
Of course if it originated in Mediterranean climes we’d be fawning all over it.

    F the CCP

CCP kept Wuhan airport open to international flights while they had shut down domestic transport from Wuhan.

    CCP never told WHO

CCP this is on you – and somehow not one protest outside the Chinese embassy?
No we had silly Leo thanking the CCP!
