Behold: the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing – this one a uniquely patina’d, numbers-matching, US special order version of the classic – back on the market 65 years on, unrestored but in otherwise excellent condition with five previous owners (six, if you include Matt Pilates).

Had one of those. Rubbish. It was a present from Christy O’Connor Snr for the caddying at the British Open. Hardest game in the world, pro golf bag carrying. I was touring around the Ring of Kerry with the missus when the German engineered road-holding let me down and I slid across the solid white line straight into Bishop Casey in his Lancia. Annie Murphy was in the passenger seat, so it was hushed up. Became a Lockhard in St Stephen’s Green instead. Never looked back.
