It’s too early for me to get my head around Laura Whitmore’s ad for the British Army podcast, followed by a John Hume quote. pic.twitter.com/ESNE8aCZeM

As a journalist I’m sure you know it is important to have conversations and research yes? Also as Hume spent his life speaking out (and I have quoted) it’s not about one side better than the other. It’s about respect for each other. Peace and love x

Yesterday.
Meanwhile…
Totally agree! And apologies if it looks like I’m recruiting or something mad like that! Just a conversation as I think it’s important to have with anyone you don’t understand. And always important to listen to people’s lived experiences. It’s how we all learn x

Elle who I speak to has an army job. Though totally see the confusion so I’ll change!

Laura Britmore, amirite?
FIGHT!
Part of this is missing.
Should be there now. Thanks, george.
Laura Kitchener….wha!?
Laura Britmore
In fact, Kitchener, like Whitmore, was also Irish.
While probably not really on topic, and I have to say I am not familiar with Laura or her work, this raises an interesting issue for me.How to deal with local celebrities.
I mean, my town, and my school, have produced several people who have become famous in their own rights at national and international level. So what is the right protocol upon meeting them in the pub? Do you treat them as they were in the hallowed halls of school youth, or defer to them as the demigods they have become?
A few days ago I was out for my socially distanced acceptable walk and had someone yell across the road at me using the nickname I have not heard since 6th class.I am not sure what was worse: the fact I was called by it, or that I immediately turned to reply!
People in the South Don’t understand. Cry me a river between two teams of nordie bigots
It’s the familiar yearn for inclusion…..while willfully maintaining exclusivity.
is it all possible to put a bit of context on this because putting up the same tweet twice doesn’t.
That’s done, dav. Thanks and sorry.
good ol’ Bodge, the most error-ridden poster in the ‘sheet haha love it! never change.
What is wrong with People? Yeah she’s Irish, but she’s doing a podcast on the British Army… she’s a broadcaster, who built her career in Uk, doing her job. Too many people are outraged at very little days…
I’ve forwarded your reply to James McClean
Unless it’s written in crayon he won’t understand it.
that’s not actually how literacy works
That’s like the old “I’m writing this slowly as I know you can’t read quickly” joke.
Do.. he chooses not to wear the poppy and gets stick for it every year. That again is his choice, when he is in UK earning his living. So why the double standard for Laura Whitmore who is in the UK earning a living?
You’ll need to remind me of Stoke City’s involvement in Bloody Sunday.
also unable to understand subtley and vaguely complex or layered issues.
It is possible to admire John Hume and be an active part of the British army
Possible yes, logical no – not unless cognitive dissonance is your friend.
Anything for a buck Ms. Whitmore.
One thing that sticks out is she says “it’s not like I’m recruiting for them”. That’s exactly what she is doing. She really is a fool if she doesn’t understand that.
And if she is recruiting for them?
Just weird to pretend she isn’t.
She’s not needed.
There’s around 4,000 Irish people in the British armed forces.
Lads attracted by the Irish heroes honoured for the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq such as Tipp-born L/C James White awarded the Military Cross for bravery.
High youth unemployment in Ireland, the prospect of global adventure and rapid promotion to higher ranks are all said to be attracting the right sort for a career in H-eire Majesty’s Armed Forces.
The Royal Irish Regiment is a popular choice natch.
I’m sure that the 71 veterans & serving members of the British armed forces who took their own lives in 2018 got a warm feeling inside from all of this honouring.
And the circa 12,000 homeless former members of UK armed forces.
And all the Iraqis and Afghanis they killed and maimed.
I didn’t suggest she is trying to recruit Irish people. Obviously the British Army do feel she is needed though otherwise they wouldn’t have the podcast. They have been running marketing campaigns for decades.
Mercenaries
Ah so cute to see the Brits turning to the Irish to help them recruit more soldiers. Since they were run out of Ireland by the IRA, they have been a beaten docket. No empire can survive such humiliation.
First it was TV. Then cricket . Now this.
Makes sense.
Fat stag party UK yobbos can’t fight for beans.
I think the Irish lads fancy the proper thing in the British Army and not earning badges for making campfires and the correct position of a woggle that they’d get in the Irish equivalent.
Plus they don’t have to learn how to drive personnel carriers specially converted to have one forward and seventeen reverse gears.
oh yeh… spot the ex boyscout leader !
hence the exile from blighty, eh, charger ?!
You’re struggling today Brother.
Have a lie-down on your hammock and think up some better material.
Heh x DibDibDib.
already in my hammock – every day from 2ish to 5ish
its 34 degrees
Every day the Brits wake up to the knowledge that a raggle taggle bunch of Irish men and women drove them out of Ireland. We bombed them and beat them. We reversed colonialism and showed countries that independence could be achieved. Now Britain has Boris and Brexit and not a friend in the world, and they are using an Irish girl to help their sad little army. No wonder people are leaving England in droves. the shame.
Nope, I’m fairly certain there isn’t a single British person who wakes up thinking that at all.
But fortunately you’re one of a dwindling number of Irish people who think they do.
It’s for you and them that the WINKY-WOOometer was invented.
Have a 9/10 old sport.
it says #ad in her list of hashtags which means it is literally an ad. you legally have to put #ad or #spon at the end of a social post if youre being paid to advertise something.. it also says #armyjob and she’s wearing camo. she is totally being paid by the army and doesnt wanna admit as much.
Claiming a British Army recruitment ad isn’t a British Army recruitment ad is ridiculous.
are we saying that charger salmons is actually laura whitmore?
If it means easily triggering gombeens like you then I probably am.
hehe
youve never ever ever triggered me, charger
you may have misread things..

Why would anyone be listening to a Laura Whitmore podcast, when there’s so much more to be doing with your time?
Like commenting on Broadsheet…
Sez the poster who has commented six times on this topic alone.
Not sure why, but this lead me on an S Club 7 rabbit hole. I have not done that since my daughter was a little ‘un
Not sure if I should say ‘argh’ or ‘don’t stop’!
Máire T ought to be aware that people from Ireland should not be referred to as Southerners, unless she is specifically talking geographically, ie Munster and part of Leinster, if she is referring to the 26 Counties, she is being offensive and ignorant
We will all make sure to conform to your understanding of national/societal/cultural groupings. Many thanks for the timely reminder.
So instead of applying a top-down ideal that appeals to you (that Ireland, north and south, is one society) why don’t we consider reality for a quick sec. Maybe there are societal differences between the north and the south. Would be amazing if there weren’t, you know the whole 100 years or so apart. Different state appartus. Different compositions. Different problems.
Maybe a southerner is someone from the Republic. Maybe it is accepted language that most of us can comprehend as a handy heuristic and we are not offended by it as it refers to an idea or group with its own differences, experiences and influences (greater and lesser depending on the case) that can be made distinct from the whole that you are referring to.
Or we could just strive toward your ideal and ignore reality.
North/South is factually incorrect.
Malin Head, in “The South”, is further north than all of Northern Ireland.
My personal favourite nomenclature is “Democratic People’s Republic of Ireland” for the 6 counties versus the “Republic of Ireland” for the 26 counties.
And if we ever get to a 32-county: it’ll change to the Federal Republic of Ireland.
Well most of Northern Ireland is more north than the Republic. We can hardly call the thing “The bit that is south of Malin Head but North of most of the Republic… of Ireland”.
I do agree both names need a bit of an update. They are both a bit bland and passé. I think we should forget this whole federal republic/federation/united/democratic republic of/republic of nomenclature and just call the entire thing Dave or something. We would stand out.
Oftentimes the difference between “right & wrong” and “a grey area/complex issue” is often a paycheck.
Clearly Laura wants to keep being a somebody and not a nobody like the rest of us, so she’ll shill for the empire, as many others have done before.
Doubt she really needs the British army podcast money that badly and it isn’t exactly a big career move for her.
Sorry what’s her day job again? Cos this is what work looks like for broadcasters outside of RTE’s golden circle.
Love Island. a bit bigger than RTE.
Is she guaranteed that gig for life? That’s the difference between her career and Tubs & Lottie et al.
Can we refer to her now as a Celebrity?
Or sellabrit perhaps?
Laura Britmore, ArmaLite – amirite?
If Laura Whitmore has a podcast worth talking this much about then where’s yours Bodger?..
Get on it fast…
