In Pod We Trust

at

Outside It’s America.

A podcast covering 50 states in 50 days.

Journalist and broadcaster Philip O’Connor writes:

I was in the Hilton Hotel in New York where Donald Trump’s campaign was based on election day 2016, and the result shocked everyone – that shouldn’t happen if the media and journalism had done its job.

But it didn’t.

A major part of the reason for that was that nobody listened to ordinary American voters whose ballots decided the election.

So this time around, instead of sitting at a desk rewriting press releases or talking to academics and other journalists and regurgitating opinion polls that turn out to be wrong, I’m going to hit the road through all 50 states for 50 days and see what they have to say.

I’m going to visit diners and laundromats, gyms and gas stations, main streets and city halls to find out exactly what they are thinking and what will influence how they cast their votes.

To do this I need support, so I’ve started a Kickstarter campaign (see below), and there are sponsorship opportunities available.

For €10 (or a measly 20c per episode) you’ll get 50 podcasts, plus an e-postcard from the road every week, and €35 will get you a daily email. For €500 you can sponsor a whole episode, and if you have a big brand and want to sponsor the whole series, then I’m all ears.

The media business is broken, and this is me trying out a new way of making it viable while bringing you something unique that nobody else can or will do.

On November 3, I’ll be in New York, on the ground as the votes are tallied.

Join me.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jeffrey-gundlach-says-base-case-is-trump-wins-re-election-215711167.html

Billionaire bond investor Jeffrey Gundlach, who accurately predicted Donald Trump’s presidency in early 2016 before the Republican primaries concluded, believes the president will win re-election.

“I think polls are very, very squishy right now because of the highly toxic political environment in which we live,” Gundlach said. Gundlach said he’s come across data suggesting that about “two-thirds of conservatives or moderate conservatives say that they have lied about their support for Donald Trump either directly or by omission.”

I’d reckon that’s not a million miles off the truth of the matter

it ain’t just the media that’s broken. the US is completely polarised and a large proportion of GOP supporters who are being canvassed or interviewed by the likes of yer man the kickstarter journalist there are only gonna be lying to his face. either out of shame or in a deliberate misdirection tactic just as the billionaire bond fella says there…

It doesn’t really make sense. Voting for someone you’re too ashamed to admit you vote for? Sabotaging polls to make your favoured candidate look bad when a lot of their campaign strategy relies on accurate data to game a system that favours minority Republican rule?

      1. Termagant

Why do you jump straight to the assumption that they’re ashamed? They just don’t want to be hassled by the likes of you.

        1. Nigel

Why do you jump to the assumption that I was jumping to the assumption that they’re ashamed? My comment is questioning the idea that they’re ashamed, in response to speculation in the first comment. I don’t think Trump supporters are much bothered by shame at all.

        2. Nigel

‘Hassled’ lol – the personal responsibility end of the political spectrum don’t want to be held responsible.

    “the media business is broken”

    €351 pledged of €50,000 goal

maybe people just won’t pay money for old rope, plenty of subscription and free newspapers/podcasts will be offering wide coverage of the same event

Good luck to him, but have no interest in listening to a man living in Sweden who pontificates on how ireland does everything wrong.

    What utter BS:

I’m sorry – the 62,984,828 ordinary voters for Trump or the 65,853,514 ordinary voters for Clinton?
Seems to me the win has more to do with just ‘ordinary voters’ – including, and not limited to, the strange mechanics of the USA Electoral System.

Also framing that Trump won because ‘ORDINARY Amercian voters’ voted for him, compared to what? Clinton’s UNordinary voters or EXTRAordinary voters????? Ordinary voters didn’t vote for Clinton – apparently.

    What utter effin trash.

Start off by blaming journalism for not doing its job… and then in the very next sentence… show how incompetent your own journalism is.

    I just f**king can’t believe with BS like this…

    1. Nigel

He’s parroting the new (well, it was new in 2016-2017, the world has moved on considerably since then) accetped wisdom to repudiate the old accepted wisdom. If that’s the extent of his analysis the new model of journaiism hasn’t much to offer that the old already does.

    2. Termagant

The electoral college isn’t a strange system. The United States isn’t a single political blob, it’s a federalised Union of States. Their process of election is ultimately the same as what we have in the EU just with fewer steps.

The media is left wing by a massive margin, and their portrayal of conservatives is so disingenuous both in USA and in UK, these new radical liberals despise the working class, lazily labelling them all as racists, homophobes, transphobes, sexists… insert insult of choice, so while they continue on that lazy track of thinking and promoting the weaponisation of victimhood, the likes of Trump will keep on getting elected as the majority (many secretly) don’t agree with this fakey world utopia being spun by the media.

    1. Nigel

Trying to have it every way. Electing Trump while at the same time putting the responsibility for the consequences on a media that slavishly tries to give conservatives the benefit of the doubt every time, even as right wing media mogul billionaire powermongers fund the likes of Trump and Brexit while systematically dsmantling and undermining a free press and functional democratic states. The election of Trump and continued support for him proves the right is a welter of entitlement, resentment and hatred, all weaponised.

      1. Scundered

Thank you Nigel for illustrating my point precisely. In just about every post I get to witness you deliberately misunderstanding the world around you to a frightening degree. Identity politics, social justice victimhood, virtue signalling, cancel culture, Antifa… All are the new left wing ways of life. But feel free to continue with your fantasy about conservatives.

        1. Nigel

My fantasy about conservatives is that they voted for Donald Trump, and I can judge them for that and hold them accountable. Your fantasy about conservatives is that they voted for Donakd Trump but it’s actually all my fault.

          1. Scundered

Your judgement is way off the mark though, did you not even guess as much by the way you end up in heated arguments in so many conversations every day, despite the fact that I would guess the Broadsheet readers are a very mixed bag of people, though probably mostly liberals in the classic sense.

          2. Nigel

My judgement is that people who are more scared of antifa than they are of Trump, or more horrified by social justice than they are by Brexit, are being wilfully stupid. That may be off the mark, but no-one here has yet managed to make the case. Besides, it’s usually the same few commenters who I get into heated conversations with, usually the sort who claim to love healthy debate, but who get incredibly miffed when I choose to debate them.

          3. Scundered

Brexit didn’t cause lots of murder, the burning down of businesses and setting the cities on fire, or calling for militias, like social justice does. Brexit was simply a vote, and it really won’t matter much either way, life will continue.
So yes, social justice is a much bigger problem, peddled by those least equipped to make things better.

And to think you find Trump scarier than a self made mob (Antifa) who assault or burn down anything that disagrees with them, like the Nazis did, is equally ridiculous.

            Check your thinking.

Have a look at your new hero, the leader of Oxford BLM calling for a militia, and you support this kind of crap?

    2. Hector Rameriz

All you need to do is peruse journalist twitter and see the total ‘right on’ opinion. I’m guessing half of them wouldn’t hold the same opinions in private conversation. But their twitter opinions build following and subsequently profile and maybe nab a job at a ‘premier’ outlet.

      1. Nigel

Then, for a bit of balance, you can go to a conservative news sites like Breitbart, to sample some of their ‘right on’ opinions and ‘facts.’

        1. Hector Rameriz

I would, if I was so inclined, but I’m not. I’d consider myself left wing, but some on twitter are embarrassing.
