Professor Pete Lunn of the Behavioural Research Unit of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI)

This morning

RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney.

Via RTÉ:

Pete Lunn, Head of the ESRI’s Behavioural Research Unit, said in a recent survey just over 70% of respondents said that people who tested positive for the virus had been “reckless or careless“.

He also said that a substantial minority of respondents said that people who test positive have themselves to blame.

Mr Lunn said the research was carried out after the behavioural change subgroup of NPHET, of which he is a member, had heard anecdotally from GPs that there was a reluctance among some people, particularly younger people, to get tested.

He said people were reportedly worried that others would blame them or suggest that their behaviour had not been “up to scratch“.

Really?

Really?

REALLY?

Not many consequences though really is there?

Mostly young folk, they shrug this thing off like…. well like a bad cold ;-)

      Yes. Very professional.

      They heard stories anecdotally.
A survey was commissioned to see if there was any truth to the anecdotes, and to investigate other related issues.

      Bravo!

So, Cian, why not conduct surveys on everything that is heard anecdotally?

e.g. – anecdotally, there are up to 9 workers at meat plants sharing rooms. Any NPHET Survey commissioned?
e.g. – anecdotally, visitors to Cheltenham brought back Covid-19 and infected others. Any NPHET Survey commissioned?

Or does NPHET just pick and choose what they like to commission reports on?

“why not conduct surveys on everything that is heard anecdotally?”

I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like an effective use of resources.

I’m not sure why the ESRI would run a survey on either of those two topics. Neither seem suitable topics for a survey.

As for the “visitors to Cheltenham ” – I’d say the HSE contract tracing has captured that. You could send in a FOI request and write your report!

Do you know that NPHET hasn’t commissioned reports on either of these?

Surely young healthy people catching then clearing CoVid is a good thing?

I don’t understand this logic that everyone should indefinitely shield because all that is going to do is store up more cases next winter. It is going to move through the population one way or another- the only questions are when and who.
