Con te partiro by Andrea Bocelli, I used to love having this timed for when I turned the corner onto the Seine at the crack of dawn, the light, the emptiness and all that beauty just for me with this reaching crescendo in my headphones, well it would bring a tear to a glass eye
jaysus J, men must be falling in love with you by the day
if they are they are keeping it fierce quiet haha
Give it a lash Jack……no idea what he’s singing about to be honest…..but it’s gorgeous.

Hard for music-lovers to identify a “favourite” in any genre, but I’ve had a great grá for The Gloaming since they came on the scene. Iarla’s diction is so easy to follow and I love his voice:
https://youtu.be/CP0wcwCQbOs
I think they are brillent ! surprisingly good to run to !
Is that the Tristel in Cork?. Great venue

Ginette, Têtes Raides, I love how this builds, it’s so quintessentially french for me ..oh and I saw these guys ten times in concert, amazing live !

La nuit je mens, Alain Bashung
well we all lie at night Alan
+1 to Bashung.
Used to get goosebumps listening to these guys. Think all of that has been diminished by over play in advertisements and the background music to the god awful ‘adversity bit’ in x-factor et al.
Not only is it non English, some parts are non language, he uses a placeholder language to fill gaps as the music comes before the lyrics.

Yes !
Absolute banger, came on here to post it too!
Always raises a smile :)
Bertrand must be making more out of the song now than he did when it was originally released. It’s currently featured in two different ad campaigns and has been used before.
And popped up in a couple of movies I’ve seen recent enough too… Can’t recall which ones tho :)

something a little more recent to hit the old dancefloor
La Dot, Aya Nakamura
Right so I’m slightly cheating here, because it does start in English.
But it’s a brilliant song/video and when the duet kicks it it’s amazing.
Plus the look of admiration from one of the best singers too one of his idols is amazing, as is the way his wife looks at him as she is lost in the music!!

That’s lovely, we’ve all Hennessy there. Thanks J.
I gave no idea, but I was obviously thinking about cognac at the time.
haha, I knew what you meant :) I thought it was poetic
I actually celebrated my first apartment with a bottle of Hennessy, needless to say I can’t even stand the smell of it since, sickened
For me it has to be a toss up between two. The first is Vuli Ndlela by Brenda Fassie. Sadly now departed, Brenda was a powerhouse performer from South Africa, often singing in Xhosa, as in this song. It is about the singer boasting to the community that her son is getting married.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RvfDkzUOos&ab_channel=SPHERNO
As some of you may know, I have worked overseas a lot, and at many parties, this was the only song that would actually pack the floor, and one of the few that would get me on the floor. For all us with two left feet, for some reason the dance the Electric Slide evolved as the dance of choice for the song.Apparently it is the easiest dance to teach people, but I still get it wrong :-)
:) I likey
Glad to be of service
And if I can offer you something given your wonderful selection of songs in French, this is my favourite, by the incredible Patricia Kaas – Les Hommes Qui Passent. I do hope you enjoy. And yes, there is a story behind this one two, but for another time :-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmybNk0TORQ&list=PL9589C9CA53AAEE57&index=19
one of those stories eh ? ;)
best thing about music and sometimes the worst it brings you right back, but mostly the best even when it’s bittersweet

Lambergini by Doorbeen
Well catchy :)
The second one comes from closer to home, by the singer Alka Vuica from Croatia, called Lazi Me (Lie to me). Another great one on a dance floor (her Neke Neke is well worth a listen too), This one holds a special place, as a young lady I had a bit of a soft spot for took me to my first disco in Zagreb, and this played. For some reason, it is the song that sticks in my head.

Diam’s Ma France a Moi…
This live version with Yann Tiersen from his 2006 On Tour album I particularly love for the passion in the delivery and the energy that comes across in this live performance… Makes you wish you’d been there. And of course, French rap is wonderful on the ear, and this is exceptional in my book :)
https://youtu.be/5M9aPtQ8pFU
love a bit of Diams
+1 and I’m far from what one might call a “rap fan” :)
the language really lends itself to it

Oh I was thinking about this one!

Given my penchant for this song in English, I think id deserves a hearing as Gaeilge for the competition that is in it. Coáiste Lurgan agus Nuair Atá Mé Imithe, nó Amhrán na gCupán. Trust me, you will recognise it :-)

There also this Polish one that most people should recognise, though I’ve no idea if the song is any good, I didn’t really hear it:

Back in 1990 when my sister came back from France, she brought back a VHS with French songs.
She thought it might be of benefit to me and my brothers, in learning the language and culture.
One song/video stood out. Beautiful melody. It was in black and white, and you didnt have to know French to follow the story. Which was grand for me.
It’s about a reunion.
I never thought about it in 30 years, until today.
The VHS is long gone, school days over, family and friends move on.
Turns out the video for the song is in colour.
With the passing of time you really do see things in a different light.
Patrick Bruel – Place Des Grandes Hommes (A Place For Great Men)

Just because we need a Muppets song, does this count as not in English?

No Irish wedding can be complete without all the embarrassing uncles dancing to this.
I once danced to that on the roofrack of a Land Cruiser in a very embarrassing memory. But seeing as you brought it up, this has to be done.
Aserejé, Las Ketchup

My first wife, La Señora Puta Gordo-Delgado, has a brother, Pendejo Gilipollas. He is so proficient at dancing to Aserejé, every time he takes to the floor to dance to this the crowd chants his name, “Pendejo Gilipollas”, non stop. A sight to behold. The song could have been written about him.
Tell me it’s not you?!!
No, is not me. My especiality is “The Rockerfeller Skank”. The crowds chant at me, “Skank, Skank, Skank”

We had this as our dance at the wedding.. fantastic cover by an incredible artist in every sense of the word:
Grace Jones – La Vie En Rose
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYkVtz6ozJE
But my entry is this:
A song I fell in love with in my early 20’s knowing nothing about it…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFS_nfNvD2o
Little did I know that I would end up in the country it came from and lived there for a couple of years in the south Pacific ocean… give this 1.5 minutes of your life.. it is beautiful, this is a recording of an islander singing the original traditional version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGjgLrWbIfQ
The song is a lullaby to comfort children whose parents/father has been lost at sea, an unfortunately common occurrence on the islands.
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now
You keep crying, but there’s no one else to carry you
No one else to care for you, we’re both orphans now
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
And take care of us like royalty, with all the wisdom they’ll find there
Little brother, little brother even in the gardens This lullaby will reach every corner
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now
You keep crying, but there’s no one else to carry
And take care of us like royalty, with all the wisdom they‘ll find there
Little brother, little brother even in the gardens This lullaby will reach every corner
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us
Little brother, little brother, hush now, hush now
You keep crying, but there’s no one else to carry you
No one else to care for you, we’re both orphans now
From the island of the dead, their spirit will look after us

Nothing beats dancing sweaty with my shirt off in the dusk in Marsaille with a female friend as the morning calls us out to its warmth. Bodies sweltering gyrating to this. His songs are fantastic. Born in France to Catalan parents.
Thanks for triggering one of my most happy memories <3
This one was banned in my parent’s house. I think a dictat came from Rome, but certainly it came ex cathedra from Carlow. Probably because of the video, and what it might invoke in young minds. Another great one for the dance floor, but not for the faint hearted.
Kaoma and Lambada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyLdoQGBchQ
Ooo
hahaj, my sister and I got caught dancing to that, my Mum was scandalised..BANNED, the only thing her and the pope agree on hahah
But it was a song worth dancing to!
A classic :)
You reminded me of a time working on a TV ad for Dingo Jeans, 1996 I think, and I had to get the music through RTEs copy department.
A day or two after the ad aired, I got an embarrassed call from the copy head… “why didn’t you tell me what the song was about, I’m getting stick with complaints to the station”
All I could say was “sure everyone knows that song… I thought you did too”!
The song was LaBelle, Lady Marmalade https://youtu.be/t4LWIP7SAjY
The offending line, “Voules-vous coucher avec moi” LOL!
A great song to get in trouble over, and another great video. I guess Ireland had not yet climbed out from under the skirts of the Catholic Church yet.
I regret I do not recall the ad. I was not in the country at the time. It would have been about that time I was using a Land Cruiser as a dance floor :-)
Vanessa Paradis singing Joe le Taxi on top of the pops, we were all thrown out of the living room.
Must have been fierce cold in that studio……
Hah! Same here, with word like ‘Turn off that filth!’ Neither of my parents spoke French, and us trying to tell them it was actually a very innocent song, but they only saw what they wanted.

Los Alfiles – Con Su Blanca Palidez (A Whiter Shade Of Pale) 70’s, Argentina
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEAUZHu3wQY
This version is so kitsch – cheesy organ and the camp, over the top delivery of the vocalist is so full of emotion. Maybe it’s not to everyone’s taste but I think it’s great and makes me feel nostalgic for time spent in Latin America

What do the lyrics mean?
Not a notion but snack food seems likely.
Lovin that :)
A bit of a Bollywood classic this one from AR Rahman, from the movie Taal… an acquired taste are Bollywood songs, but this movies entire soundtrack broke the mould, apparently, in modernising Bollywood music back in 1999(?).
Eyes would role back in the flat when I’d stick this on full belt… Hah!
And it sure takes me back down a wonderful memory lane :)

Seu Jorge – Life on Mars
https://youtu.be/ghqwwQXeNTA
I cannot tell you how much I hate that song. I was caught on an Iberia flight to Buenos Aires which was delayed for hours. That song was on the tannoy, played on a loop. I wanted to find Seu Jorge and strangle him.
Now it makes me giggle as I can feel the rage boiling inside from years and years ago.

Hailing from Mexico, Cafe Tacuba is a proper Latin American super group.
To say they are huge in those parts is something of an understatement. In short they are fantastic band in my opinion.
In 2007 they released Sino. And on that album is a track called “Volver a Comenzar”. It’s a fantastic track with a tune and lick that transcends language. It’s a very addictive listen.
If you’ve not heard before, enjoy!

Another one in French for you with a twist of a political message and a great homage to women on a deeper level, I love it (by the way it is based in the UK) : Renaud’s Miss Maggie https://youtu.be/I_v9IrI04h0. Do not see an anti-British feeling in this. It is one of my fav’ from this singer/songwriter who is a long time from France that I have always had in my top 5 since I am a teen. Now, I am 45 and his texts are still making sense to me in the world we are living in!

Take your time, Jonny, no one is expecting you to get it right.
I thoroughly enjoyed that! The main Indian music I have heard was Bollywood (of which plenty is posted above). Is this a traditional song?
And the girl’s voice is incredible. A completely different sound to Western or African music with which I am most familiar.
Thank you for sharing that, Papi
It’s kinda haunting, isn’t it?

You do realise the tHread is about non English songs, Johnny?
Or did you get it wrong again?
Poor Johnny. Dope.
oh right maybe Nick can have one on pre-teens just for you Papi!
“…an eight year old traditional singer….goosebumps time”
-indeed-a good rule Papi-is don’t link to 8 years olds in videos, higlighting and spotlighting the performers pre teen age, no matter what.
Are you trying to comment on a different post? Take your time, Johnny, do you mean the one above this? Hitting it hard today, upskirt.
Oh relax, Johnny. Of 232 posts here, only 4 contain singers under 13, and two of them are posts to the same song. This 4 includes the one you posted.
Papi’s post was highlighting the voice of the singer, which is haunting. And to have such a voice, with its control and the harmonies she does with the main singer, is incredible in such a young girl.
Given that many of the conversations around posts above are around the quality of the various singers, to draw attention to the quality of a singer of such a young age is not inappropriate.
To infer it was anything else is insulting to Papi. To imply Nick should make such a competition is quite frankly disgusting.
But referring to an esteemed contributor who has written several well-received articles (probably FOC as well for the largely ungrateful kids on here) as “upskirt”, is the epitome of online etiquette?
One may be a matter of etiquette, but the other is a potentially serious allegation which should be called out. They are not comparable.
Thanks Slightly, his defender had just intimated someone’s child is “up for it” on another thread, so I wouldn’t expect much from these two.
Another great posting. As you say, powerful video. I do not understand Norwegian, but that was a very good video.
Thanks again
Tis a cracker alright, he also does rap covers of old Norwegian classics, they’re nice.
