A Bridge Too Far

at

This afternoon.

Kilmacanogue, County Wicklow.

A live streaming Gemma O’Doherty has an altercation with a Garda officer on a walkway over the N11.

Ms O’Doherty and others had been fixing banners on the bridge questioning aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic before Gardai arrived.

More as we get it/Fight!, etc.

A f______g idiot of the highest order.

Either that or she’s not well.

    I just don’t know anymore.

    1. Kdoc

I’d say she’s quite well. There’s a living to be made out of the alt-shoite business. The top tier all have paypal accounts and actively seek donations.

    2. GiggidyGoo

But even sadder is that particular twitter account seems to be dedicated (addicted) to Gemma O’Doherty. Maybe he (it) needs help. Could be a Nick Nack Neorum or Jimmy DeLaSalle type. (Ask some older Waterford people if you don’t know what i’m referring to)

        1. GiggidyGoo

Do yeah. I spent some time in Waterford. It’s the only place i’ve experienced two fellas at a bar, maybe 30’ apart, having a conversation. Shouting across at each other in ‘conversation’
          Gas.!
You’ll have to go 60+ old for those references. Characters. Jayzus – the People Park, and Alice’s shop opposite, where we got our verbal sex education, and learned about not letting our mickeys touch public toilet seats. Ha Haaaaa.
          Yes, ask someone. Right craic.

      1. Micko

Yup, I have no idea anymore either. Left right centre???

But yeah – she’s not well. Her voice goes through my head too

        1. GiggidyGoo

Yes. But, to be honest, she was a great investigative reporter, and my own opinion is that officialdom has plagued her since the Callinan and Independent episode.
Maybe her voice is annoying to some, but not everything is cut and dry when it comes to what she’s saying, and what her detractors are saying.
Is she drawing attention to subjects that people are now afraid to give their views on in case they’d be labeled ‘not well’?

          1. George

Did you see here videos walking around Dublin suburbs shouting about ads on busstops and things likes that? Demented stuff.

      2. Kdoc

It’s difficult to define with clarity, but I’ll have a stab at it:
        FG Right
        FF Centreish (but mostly Right)
Lab Were once Centre Left, but when in office can lean Right.
        SD Left
        SOL/ PBP Far Left
Barret, Kelly, O’Doherty, Croft & other allsorts Far Right

        1. GiggidyGoo

Ah yeah, but you haven’t given a definition.

          Left think =
          Far Left thing =
          Right think =
          Far Right think =
          Center think =
          Left of Centre think =
          Right of centre think=

I mean – if the ordinary Josefiu Sopius were to arrive in a voting booth and given not names, but descriptions above, how would he/she/they decipher what they’re voting for!

          1. Jonboy

left wing = social / welfare state – big government – social justice
right wing = freemarket / less regulation – small government – individualism

far left – usually anti-capitalist, believe in immigration etc.
            far right – usually anti-immigration, anti-PC culture

hard to define as no one person is one thing and obviously ideologies can overlap.

          2. Micko

Good stuff Jonboy. A good breakdown.

As you say, I find myself on the left on some subjects and right on others.

            Humans be complex.

          3. Kdoc

            Hmmm Okay.
Right means they are going to screw everyone except the elite.
Far-Right will also screw you, but they will do it with nationalistic pride while wearing jackboots and national emblems.
Centre means they do nothing until they see what way the wind is blowing.
Left will sort of consider the interests of the so-called common man until they get into government.
The Far-Left will try hard to live up to their egalitarian principles but anyone with a half decent salary will see less of it – but they will screw the elites if they get half a chance.

          4. Pat Mustard

Kdoc doesn’t own his own thoughts. They’re cherry picked into his head by the Irish Times.

      3. Rosette of Sirius

Left and right is too simplistic a premise. I see it as more of an axis – x/y. Left and right, authoritarian and libertarian.

Left – socialist in nature and probably pushing for radical political and or societal change.

Right – capitalistic in nature with belief in traditionalism and preserving a status quo.

Straightforward stuff. But add in how far an individual is prepared to push their agenda and force their position and there you have it.

So broadly speaking most all of the political parties in Ireland fall into the authoritarian space regardless of left and right. Save for perhaps the Greenies and SocDems. Labour being slightly right of center. That’s just my opinion of course.

      4. Fergalito

Think of it as a roundabout and you’re on a bicycle perpetually pedalling, ultimately there are only two exits off it and they all lead back to the roundabout.

  2. GiggidyGoo

    That was funny.

I like the Garda’s pen. His doctor must have given it to him as she’d too many herself.

  3. Kdoc

“Dee he has assaulted me”. That’s hilarious. Dee interfered with an arrest before and she in turn was arrested; I’d say she knew better this time around.

  4. GiggidyGoo

Id agree. It’s a shame actually, as she was a good investigative reporter. I’d think we don’t know the half of what’s happened in her life after the Callinan episode.

Personally I hope she will get sorted.

    1. Janet, dreams of big guns

      grief should never be underestimated,
surrounded by the right people ( wrong) could have tipped her over into real mental health/ persecution issues.

  5. Liam Deliverance

Her friends and family need to get her some help, we should never hear from her again in the public realm, a good long holiday on the other side of the globe would do her the world of good. Good luck Gemma and goodbye.

    1. Gay Fawkes

She went a bit barmy after her husband died a few years back. She used to have a grip on reality and the Callinan confrontation was indeed honourable. But I think she slipped into a spiral of batshittery when she became widowed. I feel sorry for her, even though most of what comes out of her mouth offends me. The venom she spews towards minority groups is worrying. And her use of hyperbole to pretend something is true is worrying. Her juxtaposition of loosely related issues to form her conspiracies are another sign of mental decline. The fact that she has supporters and is financed by them gives her a false sense of credence to her badly formulated beliefs and postulations. But you can’t tell an imbalanced person they are imbalanced. Maybe some nice foreign gay doctor will be able to help her in the end.

      1. Janet, dreams of big guns

        that’s what I think too,
I abhor her and her rhetoric bit she’s clearly off her rocker

      2. Kdoc

There’s no coherence to her arguments e.g. she regularly confuses fascism with communism. She even referred to Peadar Tóibín as a communist! I’m sure the pro-life people would disagree.

  6. Daisy Chainsaw

And we all thought 2020 would have nothing positive to look back on! Haahahahaaaahahahaaaa.

    1. missred

With our new “Leader of the 2020 Rising” above, how could the year get any better? *snigger*

  7. broadbag

”You’re delighted aren’t you?” Yes, yes I am Gemma! A once brave and strident reporter now one of the nation’s most cavernous gowls, her reputation precedes her and deservedly so.

  8. GiggidyGoo

Jesus lads and ladies. Step back. Look what you’ve written (and i’ve written) here over the years. You and I haven’t an iota really have we? On BS there are perhaps 100 or so contributors. We’re all writing tripe at sometime or another.
Apart from V, who is putting her head fully above the parapet? ( Yes, V, I do admire your courage, though sometimes not your postings, and that fn bake off thing) Though you write tripe too.
And here you all are having a go at Gemma O’Doherty. Bravo.
Do you discount everything she’s saying ? Everything?
What’s your ‘opposite’ position on her various reporting?

Odd that someone hasn’t called this ‘racist’ Disappointing eh?

          1. Ian-O

Exactly. I’m still wondering why everyone is wearing masks and giving the host of The Apprentice a hard time.

            Weird times.

        1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Yeah — but if you’re a dope you’ll still come to the wrong conclusions.

      1. GiggidyGoo

Yep. I don’t like ‘contributers’ who choose to denigrate someone like Gemma O’Doherty without offering an alternative debatable perspective. It’s an easy thing to do mind you, and then disappear into the mist.

        1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

It’s not THAT hard to offer an alternative debatable perspective to G’OD, Giggidy. She’s appalling.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Obviously not. My alternative views are that vaccines are fine and I like people who are from abroad.

        2. Ian-O

Perpective of what? Some mouthpiece screeching paedo and traitor to all in earshot.

She set the tone. Don’t let a certain measure of derision and bemusement surprise you.

        3. Broadbag

@GG: How about you list the things we shouldn’t be discounting, rather than hurling from the ditch? She is generally considered to be a crackpot, even amongst previous fans (such as myself) prove the general consensus wrong with your Gemma facts rather than us listing the litany of foul garbage she has spewed out into the world, most of which shouldn’t see the light of day again. Bring out your facts!

          1. GiggidyGoo

So, put her correspondence with officialdom aside for a minute.
What’s you perspective on the subject (s) she’s drawing attention to?
Can you deal with that without an attack on herself?

          2. GiggidyGoo

Look back there Broadbag – you’ve just made another attack on her, but nothing apart from a generalization follows. Helping to prove my point.

          3. GiggidyGoo

The only thing you’ve proved broadbag is your reluctance to move away from attacking the person (her) with some schoolkid generalizations. Easy isn’t it?

      2. Kdoc

Pat, as a matter of interest, what’s your source of information? Perhaps you receive divine inspiration, but mere mortals have to seek information; not solely form the IT, but from a host of media. You seem to have an obsessive persecution complex about the IT – I’m sure they mean you no harm.

    1. delacaravanio

“Do you discount everything she’s saying ? Everything?”

At this stage, yes. I went from admiration, to support, to pity, followed quickly by anger, disgust, and now revulsion.

      1. scottser

It was her whole ‘veronica guerin was murdered by the gardai’ schtick that I found weird and offensive. I’m no fan of Jimmy Geurin but he handed her arse back to her on a plate over it in a pretty dignified and restrained way during the presidential elections. Even if there’s a modicum of truth in what she says, she has zero credibility.

    2. Frilly Keane, Rebooted, Live and Dangerous

      Eh
      Thanks GooGoo

It wasn’t by choice by the way
      I was doxxed
      Throughout an ongoing campaign
      Aided and abetted by many
      Callously Deliberately and Cowardly

Then left and treated like roadkill

But you should know that despite what was said and posted here and on BS.tv at the time
By plenty people, most known to all of ye
Some actual contributers and their other logins
I’ve never had a go at that girl

In fact you’ll find that girl was treated like a Princess here
      Like a Goddess

And you’ll find far more insidious and defamatory stuff posted here about me, and under the Fk columns

And not one person in her Broadsheet Entourage, which included prominent Social Democrats, has ever asked why I was out in South Dublin County Council that fateful night
      Or what really happened
Or who was there with the Presidential Candidate
      Not one

      And in fairness
Nobody here was even arsed enough to ask why Broadsheet dumped the Frilly Keane column anyway

BTW. GooGoo, if you didn’t like the Bake Offs,
why did you read them, was it just to have a go yourself?

      1. GiggidyGoo

The historic BS things – the doxxing and other things you’d mentioned – were before my time here.
The bake-off thing was a reaction to (as far as i remember) to an attack on me. I can’t remember what. The reference above was in jest to be honest.

        1. Frilly Keane, Rebooted, Live and Dangerous

          Ah thank you Susan
That means a lot to me
Admittedly I didn’t enjoy them last season as much
I struggled to recreate the voice of the previous years

They were never intended to be a running feature anyway
It just started as a lark – a one off
A Frilly Keane thing one day
But the engagement the first year was magic
A real Cooperative feel about them

All I tell the Bake’Sheet followers for now is that Season 11 has wrapped, so we do have a Champion, albeit in hiding and under non-disclosure clamps
Obviously along with a new presenter, filming week on week is going to look very different
I expect it to be on air by October
And wouldn’t be surprised if the Final was a Christmas Theme

I personally don’t know how we’ll all go challenge by challenge, week by week, one Star Baker at a time without the Hollywood Handshake to help us adjudicate ourselves

Now for me – that’s a new normal I will definitely protest against
          (●´⌓`●)

Btw, if Bake’Sheet gets another series, make sure I share a lovely personal story that came about over the early stages of Lockdown, xV

  9. carlosfandango

I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t be the biggest fan of the members of the constabulary at the best of times but there’s just a nastiness in this woman’s voice that makes me ask the question regarding her own sanity. She has so much anger, I feel sorry for her. Do her family fully support her public efforts to ridicule the establishment at every turn? Or do they hide in embarrassment? Or do they just roll their eyes and laugh?
I would not have any idea how to deal with this woman if I was confronted by her, I really wouldn’t – and I’ve been around the block a few times! Anyway, enough dribble from me. I like pictures of puppies.

  10. SOQ

if Gemma is just the mad bag woman with a few quid sticking up posters and banners then let her be- why the caustic vitriol?

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Coz it’s the best kind of vitriol, SOQ!
Also it’s more than just a few posters.

    2. Frilly Keane, Rebooted, Live and Dangerous

I reckon it’s type of affirmative action Same’oh

Lads trying to put as much space between themselves and the girl
From what I see the more prominent tend to be former supporters

Which is fair enough I suppose
Shur’ didn’t I have my own awakening with Hillary Clinton

But, IMO anyway, these dedicated Twitter / SM accounts don’t help anyone, besides them falling out amongst themselves occasionally and spreading into cranky splinters
They are creating and generating even more hateful content and encouraging divisive rhetoric within Irish feeds
Is it wild to reckon there are at least a 1000 independent posts with that video shared above in the last 18 hours alone
Plus 0000s more shares and comments, mostly mocking, sneering and cheering

And at a time when we should be coming together against the establishment cabals and big money Interests that are buying our Democracy

If all these activists had any cop on they should demand the Anti Corruption Ireland Change Makers Make Ireland Holy Again Latter Day Patriots actually register as a political party with the Clerk of the Dáil
That’s how we make them accountable to all of us.
That’s how we get to have our say about them – one way or the other
Just like with Renua, the NP, and Hermann’s Freedom Flighters, the Prolifers and all the other fringed and unhinged disrupting tolerance, equality and decency
That’s how we get to supervise their finances and regulate their fundraising

The mere notion that some of these are not just advocating from their box rooms a full return to Catholic Church led Ireland, but are also out on the streets with their message, should be enough glue to bring the majority together sensibly

      Just saying s’all

  11. Truth in the News

Gemma O’Doherty exposed the corruption manifest in policing and was fired by the
Independent for exposing it, we have now crisis in respect in managing the Covid
with official panic setting in, where anyone who questions government decision
are being arrested, we are indeed on slippery slope to a police state

    1. Cian

      “anyone who questions government decision
are being arrested, we are indeed on slippery slope to a police state”

*Who* has been arrested for questioning government decisions?

And if the answer is nobody, then your slipery slope is moot.

  12. JoeyJoeJoeShabadoo

As much as I can’t stand the sight and sound of this yoke, she’s clearly not all there – can concerned family members not get involved when someone is gone off the rails? Genuine question

Also what is the actually charge here, I can see it being an offence to hang something like this over a main road as it potentially can cause a crash but from what I can see she was arrested for giving lip and refusing to give her name which would be ridiculous and a bad situation (This could be used on any of us if protesting something of virtue and giving lip to the police who very rarely have any cop on or an interest in the needs of the citizenry)

The sudden upsurge in support of police from some as well as support for more police powers is worrying

    1. Susan

“Also what is the actually charge here, I can see it being an offence to hang something like this over a main road as it potentially can cause a crash”
You answered your own question. One of those banners get caught on a windshield, you’re taking a potential jackknife and pile up. Stupid and reckless behaviour from an adult.

      1. GiggidyGoo

Like the GAA crowds putting banners on bridges over roads when their team is in a final or whatever?
Like politicians putting posters along streets?

        1. Susan

All banners on bridges are dangerous
Don’t compare election posters on poles to banners on bridges-two different levels of risk entirely.
But you know that already don’t you.

          1. GiggidyGoo

That’s why Dublin Co. Co. got 101 complaints about election posters a while ago I suppose. Risk is risk

I haven’t seen any GAA folk getting arrested for putting up banners on road bridges either.
