Last week, with a lovely €25 Golden Discs voucher on offer, I asked you to name the most underrated song of the 1980s.
The response once again provided an amazing playlist of overlooked gems. Thank you.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Higher Ground by The Feelies
Gonzo writes:
I’m not sure how this band aren’t more well known, so I could pick any of their songs, but I love this one.
Runner-up:
All Her Favourite Fruit by Camper Van Beethoven
Liam writes:
I could also pick one of many many Camper Van Beethoven songs; they’re best remembered for “Take the Skinheads Bowling” but their image as a novelty band doesn’t do justice to their superb songwriting and eclectic instrumentation. This is from what turned out to be their last album (prior to a 21st century reunion)…
Winner:
Keeping You In Mind by Mary Margaret O’Hara
Friscondo writes:
When I first listened to Mary Margaret O’Hara’s Miss America in 1988, I assumed I was listening to the first of what was going to be a long list of great recordings from the Canadian singer songwriter. Inexplicably she only made one more album, years later. Anyway, here’s my pick from a stone cold classic.
Thanks all.
Last week: Win Nick’s Voucher
Sometimes I wonder why I visit this site. The endless familial bickering, the great puns, the allusions to wonderful literature. What is a guy to do?
And then there is this. The past few weeks have thrown up a wonderful barrage of great music, last one being no exception. To choose the best would drive any caddie into the rough, cause a stylist to make a castle cut, or perhaps make a pomeranian duck for cover.
Well deserved, Friscondo, but I think Nick would agree there were many deserving entries. Thank you all for a wonderful musical weekend!
I look forward to the next one :-)
very nicely said, definitely the most enjoyable threads by a country mile, most interesting, informative, fun, sometimes moving, good natured and troll free , roll on Friday :)
+1.
Perfectly put.
Yes indeedy. Also they make me think I’m cool again by having all the new music and pretending I found it. I think the wife sees through that by now though….
lol busted
Well I’m very happy CvP made the top three. Best American ‘college’ band from the 80s imho.
Totally agree Slightly!!
An education in music, old and new. Like someone remarked, it’s like been down the pub on a Friday (remember those days) and having the discussion about music regardless of it’s genre!
I too would like too thank everyone who makes Friday so much fun, and for Golden Discs for their continued support.
Well said SB, last week’s was particularly enjoyable. :)
Ah I missed this one. Here’s a late entry. Did anyone choose Ain’t Nothin Goin On But the Rent, Gwen Guthrie?

Never too late for a song, especially one with a great bass line :-)
Gwen Guthrie is class.
3 great choices. Always an education. Love the competition. Long may it continue.
(Excuse the cheekiness, but would love if it was ran a little earlier on a Friday though)
And the 90’s one ( I’m wise to how the system works) may have to be sectioned to genre/first half, second half. Given the (perceived) demographic and yokes fondness, that one could get out of hand.
I second a ninety’s one, I’ll try remember anything except falling in love every five minutes, loving the world, how pretty the lights were and how soft my skin was in advance, I’ve got a week , I can do it
Today is Friday, J, there’ll be one along soon.
I’ve already got my 90’s one.
If I don’t win this one, I’ll know Nick hates me.
christ how is it Friday already, get the hoover and the earphones out so, time to raise some hell ( dust )
I’ve had a think but it’s too vast, pick one and ignore that one? Or that one? What about this one?
And so on and so forth.
’tis a tough auld life all the same…
No one hates you, Bertie!
Just maybe your choice in music :-D
The 90s will be tough for me. That was the decade of travelling dangerously, and may resemble the not in English competition. But I look forward to it, rather than back. Good tunes make for a good weekend :-)
I’ll look forward to some new tunes so…I worked for a record lable late 90’s manning pop up raves I suppose you’d call them, I’ll TRY remember the tunes
Prozac it was called,
IMO the most progressive genre of the early eighties was Electro- the technology being used and even the production techniques were so far ahead of their time.
Cybotron – Topic- it is hard to believe this is over 35 years old.

The Feelies were great! I love their album Crazy Rhythms. Two drummers, hyperactive tempos and guitar playing.
