“So Weit Wie Noch Nie” (German for As Far As Never Before) is a 2002 song by German electronic musician Jürgen Paape
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJOIpqJ2VqA
The great memories I have from this warm, smooth piece of musical art and the lovely voice that makes it so nice.
that’s cool
+1, well cool an’ lovely :)
From Steven Wilson’s Porcupine Tree, their 2002 album In Absentia is a work of genius. Well most of all of Steven Wilson’s work is genius, but we’ll leaved that for another day.
The second track, Trains, is my suggestion this week. It’s one of those songs that you wish you could hear for the first time over again….
https://youtu.be/0UHwkfhwjsk
And if you’ve never heard of Steven Wilson, he’s quite possibly one of the most underrated recording artists ever. His production values, arrangements and his exploration of multi channel and high resolution audio produces some of the best recorded music I’ve ever heard. He’s pretty awesome live too.
Have a read of this interview for more…

Glass Candy – Miss Broadway
First released in 2006 as an EP, I’m pretty sure. Tis a modern mishmash of electronic & disco!

Johnny Cash – HURTS
Malcom Gladwell did a great interview recently with Rick Rubin about how he produced this album just before Cash’s death https://brokenrecordpodcast.com/episode-1-rick-rubin
The bleak opening lines – “It just so happens I have many concerns…” merely hint at what’s to come from the finest narrative songwriter around.
Damien Jurado – Medication

This absolute peach of a track from an album that didn’t have a duff track on it!!

To add to the German theme above, this tune from Trost “In Diesem Raum” is a cracker …

I like it! Ausgezeichnet!
Me too :)
Loving the few German tracks posted this week… Coincidentally my own choice this week was two lads from Germany though sung in English :)
Sometimes forgotten in the new NYC rock scene of the 2000’s but arguably one of the best and certainly closet to what the scene was trying to recreate. A gasp of air from the bang you over the head/blow out your eardrums album with a beautiful heartbreaker of a track.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps

Great tune!
I’ll second that :)
And of that time. Anything Interpol first 2 albums really.

I don’t know how this wasn’t a huge hit, such a great song:
Jellyman by Automata feat. Cathy Davey

Even Better Than The Real Thing.
This used to get an odd spin on Michelle Doherty’s late night music show in the early days of TV3, and it’s all sorts of scuzzy loveliness. From an album (Derdang Derdang) I go back to a lot. Also Mammy Gonzo’s favourite song.
Archie Bronson Outfit – Dead Funny

I believe I have a genuine find in this beautifully minimal track from the 2005 album Strobl by Bombay1.
I originally found it on the free CD Wire Tapper 13, on music mag WIRE June that year.
The joy of buying magazines for the free CDs may be a thing of days gone by, but it was in finding tracks like this that made it all worth while… Truly!
A genuinely unique minimal sound, the pluck of the cello sets a wonderfully slow pace, coupled with a simple piano accompaniment, and the vocal, that gentle soul bearing, bitter sweet vocal.
I honestly struggle to hold back a tear on every listen… melancholic, yet full of warmth :0)
This is without a shadow of doubt underrated, and imo definitely falls into the obscure category when you look at the duo behind it. One with a punk* pedigree and the other in “agitprop” techno…. Enjoy… and cry a little, maybe :)
Oh…. and the video…
The video that accompanies it is a simply perfect match…. and contains nudity, a la skinny dipping…
Stop that, its very tastefully done :)
More than Everything by Bombay 1 – lyrics
Fever dreams of callous people
I lost my faith
No one is real
Accept you
It’s like sharing a flat
In a noisy house
Alright
Keep smiling
And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever
In this world of strangers
You are the only one
Beautiful
And true
And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever
And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever

Mark E Smith would be disgusted that a Fall song never made the cut for the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. Only fair he gets the recognition he would simply ignore for a Fall classic of the 00’s. The wonderful Telephone Thing https://youtu.be/hbl_1QRMSrE

Thought I recognised the voice… Caledonia. Nice song pick Giggidy :)
I was going to put something hip and obscure but I just can’t resist the pop stylings of Chairlift. This track is one of the best pop songs in the last real era of great pop-songs.

Don’t you dare look back! (Okay, that is for next week!)
For me it will always be Atomic Kitten and Whole Again. Bear with me on this, but it is all about my daughter. The song hit the charts just as she was born, and for many years we were apart. I never felt whole unless we were together.Every time I hear this song, I think of her (in a nice way.) If there is anything to the Adam’s Rib story, she is all of my chest!

lots of dylan’s later stuff has been overlooked or dismissed – and, for the most part, with just reason. it’s a pity though because there are some real gems in there – one being mississippi from the love & theft album. it’s easily as good as anything dylan ever came out with.

Very different to most of their stuff which is a bit more wistful and contemplative. This one is pure amped up rock and a real standout as a result.
I saw them at Benicassim circa 2006, where they played a great set. It was during the early evening so it was pretty damn not, but they had a sprinkler system in the tent which was a life saver.
I see Fez beat me to it above, serves me right for posting without reading.

Gas. Much smaller thread. We ran outta steam in the 00s.
I’ve actually been thinking about that, the music I’ve liked, (just me by the way, I’m not putting this on anyone else), I’ve liked or been drawn into by that influence, I’ve really not changed after my mid 30s. This comp was a difficult one for me cos the new music I like is either a remix or directly taking from it. I’m not a fan of auto tune or speedcore or or the new mumble rap stuff. I may be missing out, but I have two sons who consistently let me know. Sometimes with boomer.
I like being boomer.
I think it’s also because people are trying to stick to the rules a bit more, there’s less obvious hits on this thread, people going for the lesser heard ( all got carried away last week )
