From Steven Wilson’s Porcupine Tree, their 2002 album In Absentia is a work of genius. Well most of all of Steven Wilson’s work is genius, but we’ll leaved that for another day.

The second track, Trains, is my suggestion this week. It’s one of those songs that you wish you could hear for the first time over again….

And if you’ve never heard of Steven Wilson, he’s quite possibly one of the most underrated recording artists ever. His production values, arrangements and his exploration of multi channel and high resolution audio produces some of the best recorded music I’ve ever heard. He’s pretty awesome live too.

Have a read of this interview for more…

Favourite song & video of the 00’s

“And how can you wake up
    With someone you don’t love?
And not feel slightly phased by it”

        Me too :)

Loving the few German tracks posted this week… Coincidentally my own choice this week was two lads from Germany though sung in English :)

  3. Ghost of Yep

Sometimes forgotten in the new NYC rock scene of the 2000’s but arguably one of the best and certainly closet to what the scene was trying to recreate. A gasp of air from the bang you over the head/blow out your eardrums album with a beautiful heartbreaker of a track.

She’s married to Andy Samberg! He was a big fan and they met through her music. Found that out today, coincidentally.

I believe I have a genuine find in this beautifully minimal track from the 2005 album Strobl by Bombay1.

I originally found it on the free CD Wire Tapper 13, on music mag WIRE June that year.

The joy of buying magazines for the free CDs may be a thing of days gone by, but it was in finding tracks like this that made it all worth while… Truly!

A genuinely unique minimal sound, the pluck of the cello sets a wonderfully slow pace, coupled with a simple piano accompaniment, and the vocal, that gentle soul bearing, bitter sweet vocal.
I honestly struggle to hold back a tear on every listen… melancholic, yet full of warmth :0)

This is without a shadow of doubt underrated, and imo definitely falls into the obscure category when you look at the duo behind it. One with a punk* pedigree and the other in “agitprop” techno…. Enjoy… and cry a little, maybe :)

    Oh…. and the video…

The video that accompanies it is a simply perfect match…. and contains nudity, a la skinny dipping…

Stop that, its very tastefully done :)

More than Everything by Bombay 1 – lyrics

    Fever dreams of callous people
    I lost my faith
    No one is real
    Accept you

    It’s like sharing a flat
    In a noisy house
    Alright
    Keep smiling

And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever

    In this world of strangers
    You are the only one
    Beautiful
    And true

And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever

And… I love you, more than everything
And I want this to last forever

Mark E Smith would be disgusted that a Fall song never made the cut for the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. Only fair he gets the recognition he would simply ignore for a Fall classic of the 00’s. The wonderful Telephone Thing https://youtu.be/hbl_1QRMSrE

were you determined to make sure there was no thread free of troll bullpoo, it’s really pathetic,
        lowest level least skilled trolling

        1. Janet, dreams of big guns

your tired tripe doesn’t warrant spittle, you are just a blemish on the most fun threads on here and it’s a pity, try a yawn in a french accent

They’re all at the Broadsheet party, I’m on my way there now.
Don’t tell me you weren’t invited?
Sure you wouldn’t want to go anyway I suppose…

    audio bullys ft nancy sinatra
    2005
    https://youtu.be/LqI5T0borKs
more raiding the past to augment the present.
gotta love the audio bullys – what a juxtaposition, nancy so soulful, audio bullys full of strut and swagger, you might say abrasive even. it brings renegade soundwave to mind.

  8. Jonboy

I was going to put something hip and obscure but I just can’t resist the pop stylings of Chairlift. This track is one of the best pop songs in the last real era of great pop-songs.

I caught them touring the album after this and Caroline Polachek was as effortlessly cool in real life.

nick, could these stay open beyond friday – ideally for the weekend; these need thought, reflection and research

  10. Slightly Bemused

Don’t you dare look back! (Okay, that is for next week!)

For me it will always be Atomic Kitten and Whole Again. Bear with me on this, but it is all about my daughter. The song hit the charts just as she was born, and for many years we were apart. I never felt whole unless we were together.Every time I hear this song, I think of her (in a nice way.) If there is anything to the Adam’s Rib story, she is all of my chest!

I love Midlake and I despise Neil Young Otis, I hope you win but we’ll need a better description :)

      1. Otis Blue

Scratch that so. I’ll go with another band from Denton Texas.

‘Cause if your band is only going to release one album in their career why not make it a blistering God, guns and apocalypse epic. This is a taster.

replying to yourself doesnt count as two – the second cancels out the first so youve now unentered. and you’re disqualified.

lots of dylan’s later stuff has been overlooked or dismissed – and, for the most part, with just reason. it’s a pity though because there are some real gems in there – one being mississippi from the love & theft album. it’s easily as good as anything dylan ever came out with.

so underrated that there isn’t even a decent YouTube version, so here’s spotify:

  12. Andy Pipkin

This utterly gorgeous track from two of my favourite artists, for some bizarre reason got totally overlooked here??

Fell in love with her vocals, songwriting and performances!
If you haven’t heard her she’s well worth checking out!!

    https://youtu.be/ViKVPDSkZXw

    Please enjoy

  13. Andy Pipkin

Although by no means an underrated artist (in fact the opposite!) this is from one of her later albums, still in the 90’s.

But like Johnny Cash, she seemed too get better with age somehow?

This too me is a stand out song from an utterly brilliant album.

    https://youtu.be/x8bkG-MP-80

    Please enjoy.

      1. Janet, dreams of big guns

lol I’m officially alcohol free now almost three months, I’m high on life Papi , catches sight of pile of endless dishes ;)

        1. Slightly Bemused

Congratulations, Janet. Life is seriously underrated, and deserves to have its own story.

As for the dishes, probably my best investment was a countertop dishwasher. Takes me 3-4 days to fill, and uses less water than I would for a day’s worth :-)
Only thing – I cannot sing along, so I save that for the shower !

    The Walkmen – The Rat

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWR1h-5EzUo

Very different to most of their stuff which is a bit more wistful and contemplative. This one is pure amped up rock and a real standout as a result.

I saw them at Benicassim circa 2006, where they played a great set. It was during the early evening so it was pretty damn not, but they had a sprinkler system in the tent which was a life saver.

      1. eamonn

Tune indeed, didn’t expect to end up hearing mr robinson in a 2000’s session.
as a timeless classic it fits everywhere.

      2. Papi

I have an eighteen year old stepson who is convinced Nirvana was his discovery, morphed into Kurt for a bit. Hilarious, but we couldn’t let him know.

        1. Slightly Bemused

I was late getting to know Nirvana. I still find wonders :-) I understand that for your stepson.

    1. Papi

I’ve actually been thinking about that, the music I’ve liked, (just me by the way, I’m not putting this on anyone else), I’ve liked or been drawn into by that influence, I’ve really not changed after my mid 30s. This comp was a difficult one for me cos the new music I like is either a remix or directly taking from it. I’m not a fan of auto tune or speedcore or or the new mumble rap stuff. I may be missing out, but I have two sons who consistently let me know. Sometimes with boomer.
      I like being boomer.

      1. Janet, dreams of big guns

I think it’s also because people are trying to stick to the rules a bit more, there’s less obvious hits on this thread, people going for the lesser heard ( all got carried away last week )

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Aye. Mates of mine who gigged with him, in that place in Temple Bar whose name I forget, commented on that before he hit the big time. Twas always the way, apparently.

    1. Papi

I am married to a Russian/Sicilian gypsy who is an associate professor of philosophy and also a Playboy model. Nothing like that works, I can tell you, I’ve tried it all.
Tough crowd, I can tell you.

great voice, alice, funky business provided by quantic
sounds like it could be much older.
    see you all next friday.
as ever, new tunes to be checkin, new threads to unravel.
    great fun really

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

      Love it.
Heard her on a podcast. She’s a rum ‘un. They were a bit perplexed by her.

    Beautiful Day – U2

    “Touch me
Take me to that other place
    Reach me
    I know I’m not a hopeless case

What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
    Don’t need it now
    It was a beautiful day”

On the remote chance that I win, please give my voucher to a homeless family. Pay it forward.
