That tool McGregor punched an elderly man at a bar with full force.. from behind. Unforgivable in any social network. That the auld fella didn’t so much as blink.. well.. how could McGregor be taking seriously ever again..?

Whilst media has always had a certain narrative bias, it’s really scary to see the scale of the bias nowadays browsing through those headlines, the publications all seem to be forced away from centre to the extremes. Really not good for the world.

everything needs more drama, that’s the rule these days, it’s exhausting unless you have a three second attention span…

    2. George

I know, the one about Christmas parties is shocking and don’t get me started on The Question of the Sport.

So Nphet have to give separate briefings to FF and FG. This ‘government’ is a kindergarten.
No minutes of Nphet meetings for over a month now? Are all members attending the meetings? Are there meetings even!
This is a farce, and the public are caught in the middle of a power play between Varadkar and Martin.

Interesting that all the main newspaper websites covered the Yellow Vest march yesterday except RTÉ- quelle surprise. 9 O’clock news very briefly mentioned it citing a 2000 attendance figure. This is bound to grow- set to be the biggest grass roots movement since the water protests I think.

9 O’clock news did however incorrectly repeated the word ‘cases’ as though they were on a commission- a case being someone who has a disease, not just a positive swab test of course- no word on how many people were hospitalised or in ICU- the usual slanting by omission.

Convenient how no more than 6 allowed in a home at the same time as pubs are set to open up- being in a pub full with 50 odd drunk strangers will now be a lower risk than sitting on your sofa with a few friends round it appears. That doesn’t make any sense- but sure common sense went flying out the window a long time ago.

    1. Nigel

At least the water charge crowd had the sheer spectacle of Irish Water to rally round for its narrow, self-defeating, dead-end focal point, this anti-mask wearing nonsense is pure culture war nonsense.

          1. Daisy Chainsaw

Just shows how monumentally thick antimaskers are. Someone holds a rally that says anti mask and all the donkeys turn up, not knowing who’s leading them.

            dO yOuR rEsEaRcH!

I’ve avoided rallies and marches for causes I support because I didn’t want to be tainted by association with the organisers.

          1. Nigel

It’s a political movement driven by opposition to the wearing of facemasks during a pandemic of a highly contagious airborne virus with no vaccine. You don’t get to diss student politics.

          2. SOQ

WRONG- it was an anti MANDATE protest-

            No mandatory masks
            No mandatory vaccines
            No mandatory testing

But here is the thing- some people feel so strongly about this issue that if there is no other outlet apart from right wing mediums then that is what they will use.

Why is it that someone like Marcus de Brun could not get any media space (apart from Broasheet) to highlight the nursing home scandal?

There is horrendous censorship going on right now.

          3. Nigel

Ah yes, masks, testing and vaccines, the three things you have to object to during a viral pandemic. Idiocy.

          4. Daisy Chainsaw

Keep excusing your support of nazis. If nazis are the only ones having anti mask marches, it says a lot about you that you’ll happily go along and support them instead of organising a non nazi march. Donkeys like you are being used. You’re just to easily led by conspiracy theories and unscientific woo to see it.

          5. SOQ

The pandemic ended in May Nigel- and there will be no second wave because there never was one before. China’s season is three months ahead of here- so where is it?

          6. sidhe

ah, I stopped trying to reason with this mentality ages ago

            not worth your energy Nigel

they are ‘just asking questions’, after all

          7. Nigel

Culturally and politically, this is a model and a wedge issue for mobilising objections against actions to mitigate the effects and causes of climate change. It’s terrifying and dispiriting.

          8. f_lawless

My take would be this – a growing number of people, who happen to have a whole range of different political outlooks, are gathering in solidarity for public displays of dissent againat the continued approach of our government and health officials regarding Covid-19. What they agree upon is that there is something very wrong with this continued approach; that policies have been based on too narrow a set of expert opinion and that they haven’t been adjusted accordingly – either as new evidence emerged about the nature of the virus, or as the extent of the collateral damage being done by the policies has become apparent (not that it was too hard to predict)

On the other hand, it’s human nature that those members of the public who aren’t of a similar mindset would find this growing display of dissent disturbing and a threat to their belief system on some level.

In order to reassure themselves that the dissenters are misguided and that they are surely the ones with the moral rectitude, some have attempted to rationalise the public display of dissent as being engineered and driven by fringe far-right groups who are leading misguided people astray. They may also latch on to the most easily-ridiculed extremist characters within the group of dissenters in order to dismiss the group as a whole. Everyone then gets demonised as far-right conspiracy theorists, anti-science, sociopaths, thugs, lunatic fringe, climate change deniers, etc, etc.

At the end of the day, these sorts of reactions only betray their own insecurity.

          9. SOQ

That is fine f_lawless but we now have the hard left in lock step with the Irish Times arguing that we should suffocate children in schools because of a seasonal virus which passed in May?

    2. George

RTE did cover the yellow vests. Weirdly they ignored the video of a woman being hit on the head with a flag pole.

A New Theory Asks: Could a Mask Be a Crude ‘Vaccine’?

Scientists float a provocative — and unproven — idea: that masks expose the wearer to just enough of the virus to spark a protective immune response.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/08/health/covid-masks-immunity.html

If true, this is probably one of the more compelling arguments for mask wearing. We already know that the amount of virus someone gets infected with can be a determinate factor in how sick an individual can get. We also know from the data that the mandatory introduction of masks makes no difference to the viral spread afterwards.

But, they may limit the amount of virus an individual is exposed to therefore allowing the immune system enough time to mount a proper response. Of course no government would ever admit to such a strategy as there are risks involved but, it certainly fits into the community immunity way of thinking.

How this theory can be proved or disproved is another story.

    1. Ian-O

Morto for all you amateur epidemiologists if true. I for one intend to remind every right wing, anti vaxxing, anti mask loon of their words and actions forever more.

      1. SOQ

Why morto? If true then it proves that masks do not halt the spread- which is what anti mask people have been saying all along.

I am not an amateur epidemiologist btw, more an amateur data scientist. Speaking of which, Ivor Cummin’s video ‘Viral Issue Crucial Update Sept 8th: the Science, Logic and Data Explained’ has racked up near 440 000 views in 4.5 days which is as near to viral as it get- a viral abut a virus if you will.

It is being referenced all over the place, especially in England on various media accounts. Some of it is not his own work but is pulled together from various data scientists across the world. The power of the internet and- the power of data visualisation too because most people really do get it.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UvFhIFzaac

        1. Ian-O

Masks mitigate the spread has always been my understanding.

Anyway, you and your far right wing chums do your thing and the rest of us will do the right thing. So yes, morto for you all.

I’m open-minded about masks and I can see both sides of the argument.
They’re been wearing them in the Far East for years where they have far greater experience than us of the Sars virus.
But then why did the WHO spend the early months of the pandemic categorical stating they were of no use ?
On balance I wear them reluctantly in enclosed spaces but only to give others peace of mind rather than myself.
Hand-washing and social distancing have always been the most effective opponents of C-19 and remain so.

      1. bisted

…I was getting worried about how much I found myself agreeing with Hammock…mask wearing…Obama a warlord…gin…it’s a relief almost to see his stance on hailing agreements between serial human rights abusers, UAE and Bahrain, with the apartheid zionist regime as a triumph…

      2. George

Handwashing deals with only the secondary method of transmission. The main method is through the air and mask wearing reduces the risk by catching some of the droplets released when we exhale, talk and cough.

President Trump’s historic Middle East peace initiative is continuing to reap dividends with Bahrain joining the UAE in recognising Israel.
Saudi Arabia cannot be far behind. A sea-change in the geopolitics of the Middle East is underway, leaving the Palestinian leadership isolated.
Here’s this from the state-backed Saudi Gazette: “Palestinian politicians have sabotaged negotiations and rejected all peace initiatives for six decades in order to keep the aid funds flowing to their private bank accounts.”
And Abu Dhabi’s official National newspaper: “The UAE-Israel accord is a win for every Muslim … Since 9/11, Muslims across the world have been on the defensive. I saw the suspicion of Muslims in the eyes of American officials. It always boiled down to: show us peace in Islam.”
Not that you’ll be reading about any of this is the Irish media this weekend.
President Trump’s foreign policy triumphs have succeeded in making Obama look like war lord.
Perhaps that Nobel Peace Prize doesn’t sound so outlandish after all.

      1. I'll be Bach

Now that Boris’s poll numbers are down (I assume so anyway… we haven’t been given an update on that in a while here) Charger, sorry, banana Hammock has moved focus from one lying, corrupt, egotistical, self-serving oxygen thief to another?

    1. Nigel

The upcoming election could turn out to be quite historic:
‘Roger Stone calls for Trump to seize total power if he loses the election
Stone also said federal authorities should seize all Nevada ballots, federal agents and GOP state officials should “physically” block voting, that Trump should nationalize police forces, and that Trump should order widespread arrests’
      https://www.mediamatters.org/roger-stone/roger-stone-calls-trump-seize-total-power-if-he-loses-election
Obviously this is only a rational and fair response to the threat of cancel culture and antifa.

      1. Q Celt

Nationalising the police in the US is good idea then the police chiefs would no longer be held by petty local politics

        1. Nigel

Perhaps, but I suspect he’s thinking it’ll make rounding up dissident journalists and BLM activists easier.

  7. GiggidyGoo

“Not that you’ll be reading about any of this is the Irish media this weekend.”
7.3% on the Sure Have Inferiority Troubles meter. A change of name doesn’t get away from it, eh Charger?
    The only way is up.

More from Abu Dhabi’s official National newspaper:

“Now, with visionary accord between UAE and Israel, a new horizon is opening to reinstate Muslim dignity by showing peace between peoples. We can now say: ‘A new way of co-existence is achievable. We are not pawns for mullahs of Iran or the Muslim Brotherhood. Look at the UAE.”

These are extraordinary statements being made by an Arab nation towards Israel and about fellow Muslims.
    Historic times.

      1. goldenbrown

in all fairness the Brits do know a lot about instability in the Middle East
after all they caused it in the first place

  9. V AKA Frilly Keane

What a day to wake up to huh

    McGregor back to being McGregor
Kevin Myers back to being Kevin Myers
Polls showing FG rising on the backs of their former Confidence & Suppliers ineptitude and incompetence
And while the Mail report on the two ‘Royall Courts’ within the Government
We have a return of John Delaney’s wages

Meanwhile the subbed off the pitch target man, Simon Coveney, has just gone and taken over the internet, in a very spectacular Star Baker serving of the dish that’s best served cold

    Boys and Girls
We’re just about almost back to normal

I’m not quite sure why my username is being changed to something cryptic.
Is this website like a secret society where everyone has to [RESPOND TO POLITE REQUESTS BY THE SITE’S OWNERS TO ABIDE BY THE SAME RULES AS EVERYONE ELSE] ?
Silly me.I thought there might be intelligent life on here.
    Clearly not.

  11. Clampers Outside

2 cops shot in the head while sitting in a patrol car in Compton, in the US….

    What do BLM do?
Block ambulances… turn up at the hospital trying to get in… Chant “hope the pigs die”…. Yeah BLM, a great bunch to be supporting.

    1. Nigel

That’s odd. There have been multiple instances of BLM protests being rammed by cars and there have been shootings of protestors by a would-be vigilante, not to mention arrests and harassment by police of activists and supporters, links between police and white supremaicistt militia acting as would-be vigilantes, but some people yelling horrible stuff at a hospital is what you pick up on? Does people yelling horrible stuff make it ok for police to extrajudicially murder black people? Have you seen some of the memes and pictures going around law enforcement Facebook pages? Were you born a reactionary or are you just susceptible to pro-authoritarian points of view?

      1. Clampers Outside

I’m not reacting to anything other than two cops shot in the head and BLM supporters blocking the ambulance.

        Put your whataboutery away spanner.

          1. Clampers Outside

That would be funny if not such a sad situation for those police officers and their families… considering how you responded below having ignored the first line stating the attempted assassination of the two cops.

You really are a proper little rooty-toot for sure.

          2. Nigel

I sthought we had enough shared humanity to assume we both found the shootings awful without the need to say so. Either I was wrong, or you are so desperate to get one up on me you are actually willing to accuse me of condoning murder. I know you’re willing to accuse me of just about anything, but I honestly thought you’d have enough cop on about whrere to draw the line. Clearly I was wrong.

      2. Clampers Outside

Good to know where you stand when it comes to attempted assassination of police Nigel… In the “but look over here” lane.

        1. Nigel

Attempted asasination of police? You were talking about some people yelling horrible things, not attempting assassination. Are they equivalent?

          1. Clampers Outside

            Good night Nigel.

I just can’t be bothered with your tedius excuses for violence right now, good night.

        2. Nigel

Tell you what then I’m off to bed… if this is accurate and if this is in any way representative – the police have completely lost the trust and respect of the people they’re supposed to protect. They’ve become more like an occupying force. It’s a massive failure of policing. That’s the problem, not the horrible things those silly billies are shouting.

          1. Clampers Outside

Nigel is engaged in victim blaming the two cops shot in the head.

That is literally and without doubt what he has done in that last comment. Making excuses for cop killers (attempted or otherwise) and blaming the victims.

Not at all surprising that a supporter of far-Leftists /Marxist communists would do this.

“Awful person” is way too polite.

          2. Nigel

Unless you are claiming that BLM are behind the shootings you have completely gone off the rails. All my comments have been in reference to the alleged behaviorat the hospital, not the shooting.

          3. Nigel

If you’ve managed to build me up in your head as a monster who is okay with people getting shot in the head, you really need to sit down and have a real long hard look at yurself.

  12. Janet, dreams of big guns

Has covid driven everyone on here into hysteria ? Emotions seem to be running very high and I can’t help thinking it has a lot to do with the times we are living in.

    1. Clampers Outside

All good here Janet. Obviously I can’t speak for others, but this is the internet, and the Internet is where everything can appear magnified to levels of hysteria and catastrophy.
I’d bet it doesn’t appear so when you’re out and about, which to my mind, is a better representation of the reality of where we are at than the words on our screens.

Keep well, and stay safe ;0)… This too shall pass.
