U-turn of you want to…
…Der Leyen’s not for turning.
“We will never backtrack on that. This agreement has been ratified by this House and by the House of Commons.
“It cannot be unilaterally changed, disregarded or disapplied. This is a matter of law and trust and good faith.”
Ms von der Leyen quoted the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher: “Britain does not break treaties. It would be bad for Britain, bad for relations with the rest of the world, and bad for any future treaty on trade”.
She added: “This was true then, and this is true today. Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership.

could this be the sinking of Perfidious Albion? (I’d nearly accept a financial nuclear winter to see it with my own eyes, lol)
“Perfidious Albion” is a pejorative phrase used within the context of international relations diplomacy to refer to alleged acts of diplomatic sleights, duplicity, treachery and hence infidelity (with respect to perceived promises made to or alliances formed with other nation states) by monarchs or governments of the UK (or England prior to 1707) in their pursuit of self-interest.
Did you really just include your own appendix explanation?
Art
there’s something just so satisfying about the written explanation of that particular phrase I couldn’t resist ;)
it leaves no hiding place for them or their devious history whatsoever
It is indeed a joyous term, I was just surprised to see the internet had now risen to the lofty heights of providing appendix glossaries for comments now!
when was “trust and good faith” ever part of the UK’s conduct ?
perfidious albion for a reason – duplicity, lies, sleights, treachery and infidelity have also been deemed acceptable when it comes to britain’s self interest
that’s what you get from a nation of shopkeepers
If any of their “colonies” behaved like this, back in the days of Empire, there’d be reprisals, enforced famines, executions and general infamy.

“Barbados has announced its intention to remove the Queen as its head of state and become a republic next year.
The Caribbean island said it wants “full sovereignty” by the time it celebrates its 55th anniversary of independence from the UK in November 2021.
A speech written by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley quoted its first premier Errol Barrow who warned against “loitering on colonial premises”.
Missed my annual trip to Barbados this year but already booked for 2021.

Garrison Savannah is one of my favourite race tracks in the world.
And the Bajans are delightful people.
The older ones are still very patriotic towards Blighty – it’s amazing how many retired London Transport workers own bars there – but the younger generation less so.
Of course it’s only natural that as the Empire receeds into distant memory countries should want to divest themselves of Britannia’s comforting grasp.
Good luck to them I say.

National interest should be the priority of any government. EU have raked in 70 billon from Irish waters — sure it’s grand. And trafficking humans is a stain on EU policy and our gobeens stay silent.
You’re quite right Kate.
But the silly billies on here are too silly to understand that.
The trouble is Ireland has bended the knee so often to the EU that by now resistance is futile.
The more you give in to a bully the more they will demand.
Once Brexit is over and this country has served its purpose the EU will come after Ireland’s corporate tax rate.
Good luck with that.
It’s almost as if good relations with international trading partners is in every country’s national interest.
