Transformed Utterly

Yesterday evening.

Herbert Park, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

A copy of the 1916 Proclamation hangs outside the site of the demolition of the O’Rahilly house, home of 1916 rising leader Michael Joseph O’Rahilly, pulled down without warning early yesterday morning to make room for an aparthotel development with 105 flats fronting on to Herbert Park.

Actually, it’s a good analogy. Take over a venerable, well-maintained institution, run it into the ground through neglect and active acts of destruction, and then sell it off to rich pals to knock down and transform into something that makes them money at the expense of everyone else.

Lived in by same family from when built until sold in 2017, The O’Rahillys daughter in law was resident until her death not long before sale, it wasn’t a dump in 2017 but would have required investment by any purchaser to bring it up to the standards expected by those who can afford to pay multiple millions for a large house in the area

Should have been listed and protected years ago. The fact that this kind of thing still happens, shows how little ever changes here.

even with the erasing of historical sites aside.. WHY THE FUPP ARE THEY STILL BUILDING TOURIST ACCOMODATION?!?!? there are far less tourists and will be like that for ages, all the aparthotels at the moment are empty and trying to rent their rooms on daft. what do the money havers know that we dont?

      1. Mobi

There are no tax breaks for building hotels or aparthotels.

They will only be built if there is a demand for them.

“all the aparthotels at the moment are empty and trying to rent their rooms on daft.”

      – this is good news, surely? Building accommodation that can be repurposed quickly according to demand.

Where will the tens of thousands of people who used to visit this proud shrine to our Republic every year go now? Have the houses of everyone else involved in the Rising been preserved? Has anyone ever been in one? Is this just a load of outrage for outrage sake?

    1. Dr.Fart

you’re talking about it like it’s a tourist attraction, and that historical sites are only of worth in a tourist capacity.

      1. Dr.Fart

Rob you’re an FGer, you’d be more than happy to mow down half the country to make way for foreign investors. You don’t have a balanced opinion on this issue.

          1. Dr.Fart

nothing means more to an FGer than the contentment of a foreign investor. and if that means bulldozing history, or making people homeless, or deprivin the state of amenities and services, whatever the price may be, then so be it.

I’m not 100% clear on this

whatever about the merit of the house

is the developer not now in deep sht and will be made to reinstate the house – like that old garage that was incorrectly demolished (KBC Bank) on Fenian St/Hogan Place?

    1. Cian

AFAIK they got planning permission to demolish it, and demolished it.

Separately, some people tried to overturn the planning permission… but they were too slow.

Why is everyone talking about the “aparthotel”? it is just 10 aparthotel bedrooms suites.

This is a development of 105 homes. (37 1-bed; 66 2-bed and 2 3-bed). Or have we forgotten the housing crisis?

    1. GiggidyGoo

That’s of course until an attempt is made to change the use, or size etc. It’s 105 apartments – for rental to the highest payers.
Ballsbridge won’t be cheap. It’ll make no in-roads into homelessness or availability of affordable housing for average-paid workers.

      1. Rob_G

“It’s 105 apartments – for rental to the highest payers.”

        – of course you know that every new development has a social and affordable housing provision?

“That’s of course until an attempt is made to change the use, or size etc”

        – again, giggidy getting outraged over stuff that hasn’t even happened…

“It’ll make no in-roads into homelessness or availability of affordable housing for average-paid workers.”
Of course it will, every new house adds to the countries overall housing stock.
The people who move into these will free up houses elsewhere which potentially are more affordable.

There’s the result of fast-track planning. – Fast-track 06:30am demolition and the property boyos and their political friends are surely happy.

Maybe one day agreements over how best to be let away with acts of profiteeting against the wealth of social coherance will go the same way. Then maybe we won’t have time to lament the fallen rubble.
