Further to Tanaiste Leo Varadkar’s criticism of NPHET’s Level 5 plan stating it was “not thought through”, a clear rebuke to Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan…

Instead of taking Nphet’s advice on board but not accepting it, Varadkar’s calculated takedown displayed his nasty streak.
Rather than being honest with people and saying the Government feels there is an acceptable level of infection and death, the Government has muddied the water by blaming Nphet for giving bad advice.
Nphet has given its advice in good faith in line with its role and the scope of their expertise…
…The chief medical officer came back to his role, saw Nphet’s advice not being taken seriously and a Government failing to implement its own plan to live with Covid-19 through an utter lack of engagement and enforcement. So Nphet put forward a short, sharp shock to the political system and public at large.
Tony Holohan certainly overplayed his hand, but that didn’t justify Varadkar taking it upon himself to destroy a man’s credibility and character.

It is Leo. They deal with medical matters, you deal with the job you are paid to do.
Don’t try to spin this, we are well aware of your history. I’m no fan of Dr. Holohan for other matters but to try to drag him into a political issue is just cowardly.
If you don’t like the advice they are giving, don’t accept it but don’t attack them either. Otherwise nobody will want to get involved and why would they and were will we be then?

Exactly right. It would be irresponsible for NPHET to be advising on other matters. They have no remit to be giving economic advice or advice on social welfare spending to the government. Childish. He had a little smirk on his face when he said it too.
600+ cases. A lockdown is on its way. Now it will be even harder to sell because of Leo trying to cover their arse for one day but not thinking of the long game.
At this stage, a full breakdown and referenced to where the figures came from (Hospital or testing centre and who signed off on the figures) should be included in any of these announcements.
Why? Well to this date, I don’t know anyone who got this virus.
Nphet could be making them up. If they’re not, the. solid facts are required that can be examined in detail.

Mad to see that on 1.1% of deaths was in under 45’s. And only 7 people under 35!!

If ‘the man’ cannot handle what is a very political job then he shouldn’t be in it- end of.
He handled it perfectly well. Condemned the leak, explained he informed the Minister both before and after the NPHET meeting, and didn’t get into any personal attacks.
The only country to implement a second full lockdown has been Israel and its been a failure, because people just didn’t buy into it. Unlike the first one everyone is looking for loopholes and ways of avoiding the restrictions. They’re now bringing in the military to enforce it. Irish people want stricter enforcement for everyone else but themselves. The increase in traffic last week shows despite what we tell pollsters, we are not adhering to restrictions, nor likely to in enough numbers. Like in 1918 the second wave is going to be the more lethal, and I don’t really see anything that can be realistically done about that. You only get one shot at the sort of lock down we saw in March. All over Europe it’s the same picture. Everyone is exhausted and morale just isn’t there. Tony Holohan just doesn’t get the big picture. You have to bring people with you and he certainly wasn’t doing that on Sunday.

I don’t think we have much control and delude ourselves that we have. A “circuit breaker” is only delaying the inevitable. Australia and New Zealand are the exceptions, and I have no idea why. As we’re seeing now masks don’t make much difference, although I’ll continue wearing one, and sticking to all other restrictions. The countries that have succeeded are the ones that previously dealt with SARS. The virus is raging through Europe at the moment and seems unstoppable.
While I agree that there is no stopping it and our delusion of control is laughable, you didn’t answer why you think the 2nd wave will be more lethal?
I know it’s spoken of a lot, but I can’t ever find a reference other that 1918 as to why people think it will be. Not getting at you, just wondering if there’s another precedence?

*much* difference. Also they are mandated. It seems to be spreading more quickly the second time round, despite all the effort (some) people are making and all the restrictions and preventative measures.

That’s an increase of a factor of 20.
