Mass Awakening

at

A service at The Pro-Cathedral, Dublin in June

Why is mass off?

Via The Irish Times:

In your report that Catholic archbishops have requested a meeting with the Taoiseach to address concerns about the loss of Mass services , you state that under Level 3 “all religious services must move online”.

It is important to be clear about the precise situation.

With the exception of funerals, where attendance is limited to 25 people, there is currently no legal prohibition on religious services, nor restriction on the numbers who can attend.

The Government has issued advice against the holding of religious services. There may well be good reasons for this advice. But if the churches consider that the advice is misguided, they may hold religious services without breaking the law.

“freedom to practice religion is a constitutional right, thanks to DeValera.”

I assume you don’t disagree with this freedom?

wouldn’t it make more sense to take into consideration the size of the church,
25 at my Mum’s would be chock-a-block, loads of room at the pro.

I guess Matthew 18:20 “wherever two are gathered in my name” etc. doesn’t pay the bills… maybe handover of schools/hospitals/land to the state from the trusts set up to avoid responsibility for their historic €1.3 billion bailout by Michael Woods in 2002…

    Serious question, folks.
How come media, or even folk, have started calling RC masses ‘services’.
It was generally a Protestant term, like church vis-a-vis chapel.
That too has evolved. Just asking…

That great Authority wikipedia describes Mass and other religious services.
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_(liturgy)#:~:text=Mass%20is%20the%20main%20Eucharistic,many%20forms%20of%20Western%20Christianity.&text=Other%20Christian%20denominations%20may%20employ,rather%20than%20the%20word%20Mass.
“Mass is the main Eucharistic liturgical service in many forms of Western Christianity. … Other Christian denominations may employ terms such as Divine Service or worship service (and often just “service”), rather than the word Mass.”
But what about Anglo-Catholics? Read on.

            ;)
well it’s mostly lip service these days isn’t it,
once we boot the church out of education these buildings will be beautiful relics.

not all services are masses? Isn’t mass only if there is communion?

is the Sistine Chapel not Catholic?

Partly its to do with most journalist, even many of those tasked with covering church related matters, have very little actual insight into the subject. Perhaps the best ‘generic’ term would be liturgies.

      1. Cian

True. but liturgy is synonymous with service.
Most people don’t know what a liturgy is. But they understand ‘service’.
