Turin, Italy last night

Barcelona, Spain last night

Last night.

Via MailOnline

In Italy, violence was reported in at least two major northern cities, Milan and Turin, as vast crowds protested freedom-limiting restrictions enforced to tackle a second surge in coronavirus cases….

…Meanwhile in Barcelona, demonstrators set rubbish bins on fire in the streets – before riot police intervened to bring the chaos to an end.

The demonstrations came just one day after Spain declared a second nationwide state of emergency covering all regions except the Canary Islands.

The new state of emergency will initially last for 15 days but the Government plans to ask parliament for a six-month extension, meaning the restrictions – which include a 11pm to 6am curfew – could be enforced until early May 2021.

Reckon we’re heading for the same thing here, at minimum a country-wide curfew.
Manu us due to make a statement tomorrow.

That’s it, but I think it’ll be the whole country. I’m in the Gironde and we’ve gotten off lightly so far. But it’s been crawling with ‘domestic’ tourists, so the beastie will be all over the place.

what a lovely region, I’d actually hate to be in a Paris flat right now ( and I never thought I’d say that ) I could handle a wee house in the hills of Nice tho….

“Triggering the violence in Italy were groups of “ultras,” as violent soccer fans are known, the LaPresse news agency said”.

    Same old story.

You want the public to row in being you, don’t go smashing things up. That said majority of protesters were peaceful but the far right Lega and Fratelli d’Italia in Italy are desperately trying to regain lost ground as the population swung away from them as a result of their Covid-19 “pronouncements”.

  2. Clampers Outside

I’m sure someone will be on any minute now to call all these protesters across the various countries Nazis, far-right, alt-right, etc… rather than recognise the fact that many people, whether one agrees or not, are feeling the need to protest.

some people are working from home, saving,
some are watching their deposit for a house disappear,
some are depending on the kindness of centra staff to feed their children….

      1. Janet, dreams of warm feet

some are watching bread prove, the kneeding is quite therapeutic, ( I blame Milly and her crispy bread + stew comment )

        1. Jonner

some are giving the illusion of work by keeping the Skype button green, like they used to do in the office

        2. Lush

I went through a serious bread phase during our first confinement.
This time round it’s worse, I’m onto cakes; Delia’s flourless chocolate roulade has proven quite a hit.

          1. Janet, dreams of warm feet

ha I did it the other way, chocolate cakes, cookies , financièr etc …bread this time !

        1. Janet, dreams of warm feet

ah thanks, there’s much worse off sure, hopefully I’ll have a plan B ready to roll by July and try catch up…again lol

Majority of protesters were peaceful but those engaging in violence were far-right, notably in Italy. Lots of anti-lockdown groups in Italy already tweeting they have no affiliation with those perpetrating the violence.

But this does beg the question, how does one stop this element turning up and hijacking these protests?

      1. SOQ

By the Left waking up to what is actually going on.

But sure what chance is there of that when you have the likes of Boyd Barrett arguing for MORE lockdowns.

        1. MME

Then you agree that it is the populist right who are largely behind these protests? I don’t doubt that the vast majority are decent folk but literally everywhere a non-negligible number of the far right are invariably able to turn up and hijack these events with impunity.

IMO – those organising and attending need to be clear what they do and do not support. Links to the far right and opportunist populists simply delegitimise peaceful attendees concerns.

          1. SOQ

Of course and they done that here with the last march- personally I think that at least some of them are shills because it is a wild convenient tag for the mainstream media and government to then use.

          2. MME

No SOQ – the government doesn’t plant shills. This is where you and I part company. Indulge the conspiracies all you want but they are just that: conspiracies.

          3. SOQ

I am originally from the north NME- I am very away of what governments can do. Now if you want to dismiss the documented evidence of their shenanigans as ‘conspiracy’- then at least accept that some of what happened up there was facts- and not just theories.

          4. MME

@SOQ – It’s an anonymous forum. You could be from Timbuktu for all I know. I don’t believe a whit of your own personal tales as there is no way of vouching. Nor did I believe your 6’4″ and ungainly 17 stone nonsense, hence the RuPaul jibe.

Suffice it to say, unless you are tuning into Gemma and co., the Irish government does not plant “shills” at the various anti-mask, anti-lockdown “events”. To suggest otherwise reveals a level of delusion and paranoia that deserves treatment and not indulgence.

The virus shouldn’t be a left/right issue. It is about us vs. the virus. However, some people seem to think the economy can thrive while there is a highly contagious virus spreading like wildfire.

          1. SOQ

Highly contagious viruses spread every year and this one is no different.

The real question is how severe it is and given that our over all mortality rate is BELOW average so far- please explain to me how that is?

Likewise Sweden of course so no- it is not because of lockdowns.

          2. Formerly known as @ireland.com

@SOQ – enough with the death rate. All I see on the news from Europe is that a lot of countries are filling their hospitals. Tell me about all the other normal viruses that fill and overwhelm the hospital system. That is why governments are acting. They have to deal with reality.

Sweden – there are restrictions there and people are advised to behave differently. They are behaving differently.

          3. scottser

‘covid 19 is spreading faster among ginger headed people, as the virus seems to increase in potency when in contact with freckles’.
it’s obvious that lockdown should only apply to gingers.

          4. SOQ

@ formerly- enough with the death rate? Seriously?

How in Gods name can you have a deadly virus spreading like wildfire when there is no additional deaths?

Is this not a common sense question?

There was a curfew in Melbourne during our lockdown. 9pm – 5am. You had four valid reasons to leave home. Without it, people were holding parties/gatherings and spreading the virus. The restrictions worked. We have gone from 725 cases a day to zero for the last two days – for the first time since March 5th and 6th. It wasn’ty fun but it worked. I love freedom as much as the next person but there is a global pandemic. It needs to be beaten. A curfew is one of the tools available to reduce people mixing with other people.

Not just Melbourne which is a place I’ve always wanted to visit but Brisbane and Sydney too.
We were at the advanced stages of planning a fairly long jolly via SE Asia until the Rona hit.
Had an Air BnB beach house down in Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula pencilled in but I’m not so sure everything is going to be functioning normally even by next winter.

      1. Charger Salmons

I was particularly looking forward to the road trip between Melbourne and Sydney. We have a gaff lined up in a place called Pambula Beach.
We’ve only ever been to Sydney and its environs but always a country we’ve wanted to explore.
A couple of months drinking wine and avoiding a European winter is a tantalising prospect.

      2. Charger Salmons

And we’re really excited about a great property on Macleay Island just off Brisbane which we’ve acquired for 10 days or so.
        It looks utterly delightful.
So many great places to look forward to but all dependant on this blasted virus.

  4. Micko

    Wow

    Some crowds there alright.

I think more and more people are willing to take a stand against the fact that this isn’t the new plague and that we are treating it the same as we were in March is insane.

Where are the deaths in the second wave?

And before anyone jumps in with the “deaths are 2-3 weeks behind” bit, we first broke 1000 cases a day on Oct 10th in Ireland’s second wave. We’ve averaged about 1000 cases a day since the 10th.

So THIS Saturday 31st will be the three weeks mark.

Will be interesting to see if we get back up the 70+ deaths a day in the next 4-5 days.

I doubt it. But, sure it’ll probably be put down to the level 5 lockdown that everyone is “strictly adhering” to, (Nudge nudge wink wink)
