John McClean

This morning.

John McClean, a former Director of the Rugby Academy at UCD, has pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting 23 schoolboys at Terenure College in the 1970s and 80s.

John McClean, 73,  was an English and drama teacher, who also coached rugby at the school. He took up the position as director of rugby in UCD in the 1990s.

The charges were prompted by a 2018 article from Gemma O’Doherty, who spoke to a number of Mr McClean’s victims in Village magazine. Her report claimed some gardai were aware of allegations against Mr McClean for decades.

well done Gemma-not one word, nothing, nada, zilch from BOD.

barely know him….John who no i dont think so nah….just changed the arc his entire career.

“McClean approached the player who expected to play outhalf for the Leinster Schools with a suggestion that he might switch to the centre. Brian O’Driscoll wasn’t too enamoured at the prospect. “I did have to convince him and promise him that if it didn’t work out he could switch back. He’d played scrumhalf at JCT level in Blackrock and then switched largely to outhalf for the senior cycle.”

well, in fairness to BOD, just because someone- who’s been proven now to be a devious manipulator as all sex abusers are – claims to have had a big part in his success doesnt mean it’s true, does it ?

      1. johnny

oh FFS maybe its all that sun in your tax exile or counting all that irish rent, when Gemma finally got this printed after years working on it,the D4 rugby crowd circled the wagons and mocked, ridiculed her.

it was widely know in rugby circles that he was hands on,his nickname was ‘doc’ – he had a magic touch for groin-strains….he was loathed and hated amont nure past pupils…but not one word from BOD who knew him well….

        1. Brother Barnabas

in your own words, johnny – “flooding the zone with emotional rubbish”

you’ve no facts or proof for anything, just libellous slurs against an individual with no involvement

          just stupidity

          1. johnny

just as well we have you commenting from your tax exile- to set us straight, did you get that irish rent, actually i helped gemma on this artice, but carry on bro what would i know, given i wore the blue jersey and all that….

          2. johnny

…wrong tread to have a go bro:)
do you have something to add here bro,or are you just going continue to humiliate and embarrass yourself further.

          3. Brother Barnabas

            am I “having a go”, johnny ?

I made a reasoned and reasonable comment to which you replied “FFS”

so who is “having a go?”

your utter lack of self-awareness is genuinely astounding, johnny

you’re the dim-brained kid with the chip on his shoulder that I know I should be kind to, but you’re just such a juvenile imbecile that it’s hard not to find you irritating

I promise to try harder from now on

          4. johnny

lost me cant follow your rant,i think you split something on yourself again.

-are you still making a fool yourself, disputing that i spoke with GOD on this story ?

-are you still arguing with yourself if i wore the leinster jersey.

            both very easy to prove.

you moved to live in spain off the backs irish tenants ,why are you on here every day,you have nothing add here or anywhere, are there no x pat/tax exile sites in spain ?

so you just collect your irish rent and avoid your taxes, while you lecture the rest us who pay tax yeah got it-living the dream bro….

          5. johnny

i happen know John McClean from UCD and Leinster ,and Gemma, but why don’t you just fill up the comments section with your nonsense Bro.

            Great work Gemma,finally some justice.

          6. Brother Barnabas

            UCD?

that’s a third-level educational institution, johnny – stands for ‘university college dublin’. you,’d have to complete second-level education and perform slightly better than a pass in the Leaving Certificate (that’s the Irish state’s university matriculation examination). can do all sorts of things: maths, history, geography… that sort of thing

with respect, johnny, from your colourfully-constructed sentences- devoid of grammar, punctuation, syntax – it’s very evident that you’re a barely-literate gobdaw, so, yeah, I’m calling BS on that

I doubt you went beyond 3rd class in primary school

            am I right ?

            of course, I am!

          7. Charger Salmons

There’s a lot to be said for living off the back of tenants.
Landlords provide a valuable service for people who can’t afford or don’t want mortgages.
And we plough a lot of taxes back into government coffers to pay for benefit scroungers to live a life of idle leisure.
            As well as ourselves obvs.
Envy is a most disagreeable trait.

          8. Brother Barnabas

in many, many respects, you’re a national treasure, charger

its unfortunate the likes of johnny can’t see it – but few things can blind a man like jealousy

          9. Charger Salmons

            A national treasure ?
            Noooooo.
            That’s V.
She’s like the Queen Mother of Broadsheet.
She just keeps going on and on …

          10. johnny

small time mom and pop landlord, living lonely sad life as a tax exile off the backs of hard working irish tenants….tells us how it is daily, while refusing pay irish tax.

we both know you didn’t attend a prestigious private school nor play rugby, nor do you know McClean or Gemma or any his victims, but eh thanks as always for your outstanding contribution all the way from your tax exile in Span.

..and Trinity actually, McClean was the coach at UCD and my father is very prominent in Irish rugby circles, which rugby club are you member of again bro……did you play yourself at high level, if you had i’m sure you’d be familiar with McClean…

          11. Brother Barnabas

I assure you, millzer, I pay a large amount in income tax to the irish state every November – so much it makes my eyes water. but I’m happy to pay it, actually. and I’ll happily release my tax returns for your perusal. Johnny pulled this one out of his hole earlier today and is persisting with it – despite spain not even being a tax haven but hey….

          12. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

             countries are tax havens?

A list of some of the most popular tax haven countries includes: Andorra, the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Channel Islands, the Cook Islands, The Island of Jersey, Hong Kong, The Isle of Man, Mauritius, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Panama, St. Kitts, and Nevis,
I don’t see the sunny hills of spain noted.

          13. Brother Barnabas

“a prestigious private school… my father is very prominent..”

oh no…honestly, Johnny, no comment on BS has made me laugh so much

            you utter knob end

            this explains everything!

            my daddy is very important

            Haha Haha

          14. johnny

“..I assure you, millzer, I pay a large amount in income tax to the irish state every November…”

a large one please….oh my……whats that again about third level ed…LOL…bro give it a rest, its a great day for Gemma and the survivors.

ghetto forever bro…. huh just can’t take the estate out the bro… spain wow you’ve come a long way bro-living LARGE ..wha i pay LARGE – so you never played rugby then,or went UCD…sorry university college dublin..

            LARGE.

          15. Brother Barnabas

no, Johnny, I never did play rugby

I was too cool for it, and always found rugby players to be kind of knobbish

how’s your very prestigious and prominent daddy anyway ?

          16. johnny

yeah, living as a tax exile, off the rent of hard working irish tenants is the new cool.
i mean what’s not cool about being a absentee landlord so hip it hurts…way more cool than say oh cultivating cannabis in the Berkshires and La…..

you know nothing about rugby or Dublin rugby culture,if you did you would have a lot more respect for what Gemma achieved here.

            …insecure much ?

          17. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

knowing anything/ something about Rugby has nothing to do with one’s appreciation of a sex abuser brought to book ( both my brothers played btw , one for Trinity, they have the nose surgeries to straighten the honks as a nice souvenir ), what an odd correlation.

          18. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

just as you don’t have to be a catholic to appreciate when a priest is demasked for the same sickening behavior,

          19. Brother Barnabas

excuse me, papi, but, loike, were you even on the SCT? loike, did you even make the squad? no disrespect, loike, but i suspect you didn’t. and I’m next to certain that your daddy isn’t a prominent captain of commerce like johnny’s daddy. and, while we’re at it, loike, just how prestigious was your secondary school because johnny attended an super-uber-prestigious one… reserved for the very best rugger boys like johnny and his daddy before him, loike.

          20. Charger Salmons

            Brother – step back.
I understand your anger but child sex abuse is too serious a subject to let some baked stoner wind you up.
            Don’t fuel the fire.

        1. Qwerty123

Why just BOD, what about other internationals like Rob Kearney, Fergus McFadden, Sean O’Brien, Kevin McLaughlin, Josh Van der Flier, James Ryan, Dan Leavy and Garry Ringrose.

Why just BOD? Why single him out for comment over the actions of this guy that took place before most of these guys were born?

this wasn’t that well known, despite what your friend GOD thinks.

          1. Bodger

Qwerty123, no one was named in the post but I would say the same applies to those guys. GOD thinks less of us than you do btw not that that will stop you inserting her in to our little chats.

          2. Qwerty123

I suppose the question was more for Johnny, as he mentioned BOD. Very unfair, begrudging comment imo.

        2. Brother Barnabas

honestly, bodger, I think that’s unfair

paedophiles/ sexual abusers are invariably sneaky, covert and selective in who they target – it’s not a given that everyone else around was aware of it. and it’s unfair to assume that. I have personal experience of learning many years later that a schoolteacher – I was in his class – was abusing classmates. I didnt know, even though 1 was a close friend at the time.

          1. Bodger

But if you had known what would you have done? That’s the question.

McLean abused dozens of Terenure boys, more than reported. They were grown up by the time he got to the academy at UCD. It would be difficult for any player not to have heard something.

          2. Brother Barnabas

are we saying those boys should have come forward? or approached him?

I have a friend who hasn’t even told his own wife about the abuse he suffered. he told me one Christmas eve at the end of a day-long drinking session. as soon he spoke the words, he visibly diminished – became that 9 year old boy again. it all came back. made me swear I would never tell anyone. its not always that easy for victims to speak out about it.

silence and secrecy is a real factor in abuse

          3. millie

            +1 bb

My own mother only told me about her abuse at the hands of the CC after many, many years of silence and mental illness. She was a child younger than my own daughter. Very few people know. She wants to keep it that way.

          4. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

so sorry for your friend Brother and your Mum Milly,
I also know someone abused as a child, it only came to the surface late in life and explained a lot of previous anger but there was no way you could have guessed, that stuff haunts a whole life.

          5. millie

Thanks Jan. Like so much with the Irish past and our society, you hear one story and suddenly all of them come out, rather like lifting a stone and seeing all the insects underneath.

When she finally told me, it suddenly made years of mental illness and depression understandable in a way it hadn’t been before. The only other person she had told at that point was my dad. Outside of him and my siblings, she’s told no one else.

          6. Bodger

Brother, of course and I hope I’m not making light of that. The point concerned BOD et al not McClean’s victims.

          7. Brother Barnabas

no, I didnt think you were – and know you wouldnt; no publication has done more to uncover this horrific subject than BS

my point, though, is that it’s wrong to assume that people were in the circle – in this case, prominent rugby players – must necessarily have known – with the insinuation (from johnny, not BS) that this individual is at some level complicit. I have first-hand experience of being bang in the centre of it and genuinely not knowing it was happening. it seems bizarre that such a thing could be kept secret – but it so often was. that’s how these people.get away with it.

          8. SOQ

Looking backward does not meant you should be blinkered to the same patterns going forward Millie.

Must your child wear a mask in order to get an education?

Believe me- that will be deemed as abuse.

          9. Brother Barnabas

            what, soq?

you’re not seriously equating the requirement to wear a mask with child rape, are you ?

          10. millie

Soq, with the greatest respect, kindly butt out of my parenting. You know nothing about how I parent my child.

And on another note, I am very unimpressed that you chose to piggyback off a comment about my mother’s childhood abuse to make a ham-fisted point about masks.

          11. Lilly

Isn’t it sad that so often victims of abuse feel ashamed, when they’ve done absolutely nothing wrong – hence the secrecy. Why is that I wonder?

  2. d

woah the Village magazine getting lots of recognition recently. great to see its still surviving. cant seem to find it in the shops anymore.

    1. d

maybe, or maybe the source knew that GO’D is one persevering force.so the source gave her the story. they knew she was not an FF hack and friendly with the Establishment.

to note that the Village parted company with GO’D due to her political views.

        1. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

Maybe she started smoking someone’s weed ?
Personally I think grief probably pushed her into a very bad place and she did not have the right people around her but people who egged on her fears.

          1. Gabby

Dear Gemma. Give her a big buala bos for her Village article of yore. The next issue of the-difficult-to-get Village should commend her initiative. Buala bos buala bos buala bus Mr. Smith.

  3. Optimus Grime

Such a shame that GO’D is capable of positive outcomes through her work and chooses to waste her time with all that scour she spreads now. I would say there are plenty more of these stories up and down the country in a variety of sporting circles that have not been reported on yet
