I love him SO MUCH. I saw him during the Age of Adz tour. Completely bananas but phenomenally talented and lovely.
      AWWWWWWWWWW

You beat me to it. Tuuuuune.

I lobbied a couple of smaller festivals to get these as headliners if anyway possible. Castlepalooza was one

Tim Hardin – Lady Came From Baltimore
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSu44UMcB8c

Fabulous songwriter, wonderful voice, tragic life and now largely forgotten.
Died aged only 39 of a heroin overdose.
This perfect song, less than two minutes long, was covered by Bob Dylan,Johnny Cash,Scott Walker.
    Beautiful in its simplicity.

Neither are American Idiot,Boston or Chicago three other titles already included on here.
But if it makes you feel happy award yourself a biscuit.

  2. Bertie Theodore Alphege Blenkinsop

Dropkick Murphys – Shipping up to Boston

Like most people, I don’t really like the song… unless I’m locked, then I LOVE it

    Neil Young -Alabama-

Off the marvelous Harvest, Alabama is the second jab at the South from the Loner(after Southern man on After the Gold rush), it will trigger a response from fellow musicians Lynyrd Skynyrd who will have a clear shot at Neil in Sweet home Alabama (nominated in this very list). One of the most famous rock’n roll feud in history.

California Uber Alles – Dead Kennedys signature tune nicely appropriate in this time of US elections. And it’s a killer tune.

    1. Clampers Outside

How does he do those notes with that quavering vocal, always fascinated me… could never do it :)

  5. v AKA Frilly Keane

Has to be Olivia Newton John
Down by the banks of the oul Ohio
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MilfP2fVLhU

It features in dat buke I’ve talked about, and done nothing with

I’ve always thought of it as a Wheela Wheela Whail’Ya for the Export Market

anyway Johnny Cash has a version, but I prefer Olivia’s and that’s what I had in mind when I stitched it into that buke
besides, JC’s one sounds like loads of other JC tracks, see for yerselves
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud05v6GfsI0
I prefer this one with June & Co https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSTEKNAOAYw

Joan Baez did in down d’Pairc that time as well
but it was less campfire side than this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uL4SVdN9Pw

Its a song for a Willie,
    but IMO
    Women do it better

    Hon de Mná

      The Bee Gees
Wrote this and planned it for Judy Durham / the Seekers – as a San Fransisco Flowers in the Hair vibe
Maybe t’was when they were living in Australia
Anyway they couldn’t get the Seekers people to take the song – Seekers were big stars at the time
So the brothers ran with it themselves

      Massachusetts
      https://youtu.be/4XWYefe9EzI
Judy / The Seekers recorded later tho’
As a tribute to Maurice Gibb

Only one of them left now
      But that track
      Inspired this

      Mississippi
      https://youtu.be/jZEPIpTpoPs
      By the Pussycat’s
      And like the Bee Gees
      They weren’t Yanks either
The harmonies sit on top of an early disco bank and weave like warm wax in a lava lamp with the Studio Orchestra arrangements in the link there
      45 years old btw
Think it’s done alright for itself,
But it had better lyrics – I think anyway
      And like the Bee Gees
The trio on vocals are siblings

      1. Tarfton Clax

awesome band. I have a lovely vinyl album of theirs. Beautiful music. beautiful artwork on the album.

  6. johnny

    Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska .
    – recorded on a Teac Tascam 144 Portastudio,in his living room, its a simple tape recorder, instead the studio,he then ran these recording through a Gibson Echoolex to add reverb and echo, sent the tapes in.
-its an essential record in the history of home recording.
-he wrote the songs, put them down on a demo, that demo became the record
    – It didn’t sell particularly well and got no airplay
-the magic or genius was, with the right amount of reverb and echo, a cheap speaker in a car sounds lush and dreamy.
-great driving album, quite dark,Nebraska is the retelling of Terrence Malick’s Badlands, a film based on the 1957–58 killing spree of Charlie Starkweather. The Starkweather murders were meaningless, and the randomness of that violence and inability to explain it,is the album.

      Not underrated by ME!
Millions of peaches, peaches for me

      That whole album is fab.

    Reno, Dakota – Magnetic Fields
    https://youtu.be/o8JuG6nRhb4

69 Love Songs is a hell of a collection of impeccable songs, running the full emotional gamut.
Would be great to see them back in Dublin.

Reno Dakota, there’s not an iota of kindness in you
You know you enthral me and yet you don’t call me
It’s making me blue, Pantone 292

    1. Brother Barnabas

      great choice, SG

and – bending the rules a little, i know – i’d add this one from the same album:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dv82ZmkRLc

      Come back from San Francisco
It can’t be all that pretty
When all of New York City misses you
      Should pretty boys in discos
      Distract you from your novel
Remember I’m awful in love with you

  8. Pat Walsh

Lots of songs about Ohio, which is usually a swing state that predicts who’ll be next President of the USA, but this time voted for The Donald, who will miss out overall to Joe Biden. Here’s Gillian Welsh with David Rawlings, Look At Miss Ohio:

  9. Specific Gravity

Memories of East Texas – Michelle Shocked

Its a shame she seems to have taken quite the turn in recent years, but her early work remains powerful and resonant.
This song is full of evocative moments, but this sums it up:

You know, their lives ran in circles so small
They thought they’d seen it all
Yet they could not make a place for a girl who’d seen the ocean

She would appear to be ‘cancelled’ now, so no links available I’m afraid.

  10. Andy Pipkin

Definitely one for later with a nice glass of wine or whatever your favourite tipple is, this lady is just brilliant, how she never made it big is a mystery, absolutely gorgeous vocals and brilliant songwriting,

Rosie Thomas – All The Way To New York City

    https://youtu.be/1yG0Ya452vI

    Enjoy

  11. Charger Salmons

    Gotta have me some God.
Mainline Florida is from one of Eric Clapton’s best albums, 461 Ocean Boulevard which also features an iconic rock album cover.
Rather than the album version I chose a live recording with his old mate Peter Townshend but sadly no video.
Two axemen at their absolute peak.
    Set volume to 11.
    A 10 minute belter.

And in other non US state related news I’m having aged filet steak and chips with fried onions and a few petit pois for dinner.
Trying to think of a banging choon to go with the news.

  12. Joe Koyote

“California All The Way” by Luna, from the 1994 sophomore album “Bewitched”. A slice of dream pop heaven.
    https://youtu.be/bzaF-nM2Et0
Fun fact: main man Dean Wareham was firmly an East Coast kinda guy, after moving from his New Zealand birthplace he spent most of his life in New York (plus a spell in Boston). But a few years ago re relocated to Los Angeles as his son was in college there. So he made it…. All the Way… to California eventually.

  13. Andy Pipkin

Not one of the popular states so far, so here’s my vote for the state of Virginia,
Bryan and Co doing what they do best .

    Roxy Music – Virginia Plain

  14. Andy Pipkin

Just woke up with this running through my head , although not an official state unless there is a state called ‘Whatever’?, it’s lived in the back of my mind for more years then I care too remember!

Thanks again too everyone who contributes every week and too Golden Discs for their continued support!!!

Right I’m off too do some hovering

  15. Aon Duine

We were asked for our favorite song. This one is among my favourites when the tear ducts need a good oul irrigation.

    Tom Waits – Kentucky Avenue

    https://youtu.be/2bTCOQsupY0

    from Wikipedia…

Many of the song’s lyrics relate to real people in Waits’ childhood. “Mrs. Storm” was a neighbour who would sit with a twelve-gauge shotgun protruding from her kitchen window. Perhaps the strongest autobiographical influence was Waits’ childhood friend, a boy named Kipper, who suffered from polio and used a wheelchair. In 1981, Waits elaborated on these memories:

I didn’t understand what polio was. I just knew it took him longer to get to the bus stop than me … Sometimes I think kids know more than anybody. I rode a train once to Santa Barbara with this kid and it almost seemed like he lived a life somewhere before he was born and he brought what he knew with him into this world and so … it’s what you don’t know that’s usually more interesting. Things you wonder about, things you have yet to make up your mind about. There’s more to deal with than just your fundamental street wisdom. Dreams. Nightmares.
