Closing pubs at 10 to “discourage after-pub house parties”?
I can think of no greater way to encourage them. This government really are morons..

    1. SOQ

Ah leave them alone- they are running around pretending to look like they know what they are doing- the courts will decide in due course
      .
Malfeasance- duckgo it- – they deserve every single friggen sentence handed down.

            A regular reminder.
A total of 37,470 people in England have died from Covid-19.
            96% had a pre-existing health condition
            54% were over 80.
            92% were over 60
The total number of people under 60 with no underlying health problems who died with Covid this year: 339
Three years ago 42,000 people died in England during a flu epidemic. Not a single business was closed for a day.

  2. George

The human Podge and Rodge puppet that is George Hook cares about Covid-19 all of a sudden. Strange.

    Also Dr Bunsen Honeydew.

      1. millie

That’s really a massive overstatement of the matter.

If you wanted to, for example, call David Attenborough a living legend, then yes, I’d say you were correct. George Hook? Rather less than.

Islington millionaire lawyer Sir Kneelalot rebuilding Labour’s red wall brick by brick.
They talk of nothing else in former coal mining towns in Yorkshire.
Basically he’s just Jeremy Corbyn with a better tailor …

…why does the Business Post try to pit the government against NPHET…one makes decisions, the other merely offers advice based on the best public health data…

    1. SB

He has been talking for many years of the need to reform how judges are appointed and tried to bring in legislation during the previous government, which was stymied by the establishment. I think he was a sub-standard minister for transport, but in this, he’s legit. I’m sure the book contains a lot about it, but he wouldn’t have known about Woulfe when he was writing it, precisely because it was kept secret.

      1. GiggidyGoo

I don’t remember him though making any ripples about the appointment when it was announced – certainly nothing along the lines of what he’s saying now.

Meanwhile the Irish rugby team held a sombre post-match get-together over a few beers last night to discuss their latest defeat by a rampant England at Twickenham.
They called it the UN general assembly.

    Oh suit yourselves ….

    #ruggerbantz

    1. Charger Salmons

Just as an aside I’m not sure the Saturday morning papers full of Ireland complaining about those nasty England players making lots of noise on the pitch and sledging the proud boys in green was the ideal pre-match motivation for a rugby test match.
What were they expecting to meet – a UN peace-keeping envoy ?
Almost Stephen Kenny-esque in its negativity.

ordinarily when I witness a fellow making such a schlepper of himself in a public setting, I’d attempt a benevolent intervention

the last time provoked such moronic petulance that I’m disinclined to try again

…saw that Barabas…couldn’t believe that he seems to be lashing out in all directions…I was sure that when Dominic got turfed out of Downing Street and the humiliating brexit climbdown began he would do one of his regular disappearing acts…

          1. ReproBertie

It takes a certain level of self deception to have a go at a national team for using players that were born elsewhere while also supporting a team that includes the Vunipola brothers.

So with BB in the loser’s club along with pretty much everyone else except Charger’s other usernames (benblack, Kate etc) is it time to just collectively ignore his ‘contributions’? He’s little more than a yapping pup these days, one good belt of a rolled up daily mail usually shuts him up.

          3. Charger Salmons

            The Loser’s Club.
What an excellent description. I hope you don’t mind if I borrow that.
Of course entry requirements are fairly low.Mouthing words as you type them is normally enough to get you in.
And this club is full of guppies.
            Marvellous.

          4. Brother Barnabas

it’s hard to know if you’re being self-deprecating (“the Loser’s Club”) or if you simply still havent grasped how to use an apostrophe to form a possessive noun

‘ Trinity College Dublin is considering removing the name of George Berkeley from of one of the libraries on its campus because the 18th-century philosopher was once a slave owner.
The discussion around Berkeley Library coincides with what the university describes as a wider commitment to respect diversity.
Following the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement earlier this year, Trinity has informed staff and students that it is committed to “decolonising the curriculum” and will be introducing its first black studies course.
    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/trinity-college-dublin-mulls-bringing-george-berkeley-to-book-over-slave-links-h32drlwp9

A quick reminder that in the 2020 World University Rankings TCD dropped 44 places to 164th and remains the ONLY Irish university in the top 200 of the Times Higher Education annual league table.

    2. Toby

We don’t want to become the kind of country that celebrates slavery. In the UK you banished a Duchess because she was coloured. You shamed a black footballer for trying to feed your kids. And the number of BAME people dying from Covid reveals how racism is institutionalised in Britain. We don’t want to become that and if it takes removing Brit slaveowners from public, its a small price to retain National dignity.

      1. Charger Salmons

Royal Duchess banished from her free multi-million pound house renovated at UK taxpayer expense and forced to slum it in her multi-million dollar mansion in California complains Irish Republican barstooler.

        1. Toby

Royal Black Duchess shunned for not being white enough for ex colonial empire. Not a nice look really. But then again, for a country that carried out Bloody Sunday, you’d probably call this an evolution of sorts.

You don’t like it up you Charger (as Mountbatten never said to the young lads of Kincora). And as long as you embrace people like him and shun the Black Duchess, you will forever be loathed for who you are.

Is this the same Trinners that has in the past 5 years welcomed none other than Madeleine “The price is worth it” Albright, when speaking of the half a million children killed by US sanctions on Iraq, or Hitlery “We came, we saw, he died” Clinton, after Qaddaffi had been killed having had a bayonet forced into his rectum on the side of the road, as part of the US regime change project in Libya which has left the once most prosperous country on the African continent ruled by competing warlords, human slave auctions are rife and unleashed the worst refugee crisis since WW2 on Europe resulting in bodies washing up on European beaches and the increasing polarisation of politics across the continent? That Trinity College? Those lads are seriously woke.

        1. Charger Salmons

I often find wokery is the result of some people having too much time on their hands and just about everyone employed by a university falls into that category.
All this virtue-signalling is fine and dandy but surely these clowns would be better off trying to arrest the headlong plunge of their university down the global index of competence and quality.
You only have to read some of the comments on here to understand how poor third-level education in this country has become.

Thou saw the fields laid bare an’ waste,
            An’ weary Winter comin fast,
An’ cozie here, beneath the blast,
            Thou thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
            Out thro’ thy cell.

That wee-bit heap o’ leaves an’ stibble
Has cost thee monie a weary nibble!
Now thou’s turn’d out, for a’ thy trouble,

Still, thou art blest, compar’d wi’ me!
            The present only toucheth thee:
But Och! I backward cast my e’e,
            On prospects drear!
An’ forward tho’ I canna see,

I have to wonder if there was not an ulterior motive in this RTE teeth ‘n tits picture thing. I find it hard to believe that these champions of everything governmental did not know that those pictures would be released.

RTE would be under very strict restrictions as to what can and cannot be said on the topic after all- it is in effect a state of emergency- quite similar to a war situation, but when you look at the public support of lockdowns, there is only one way it can go- and that is down.

Are they maybe starting to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds? I am probably just giving them too much credit- pity Turbity wasn’t there.

    1. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

I think people really are that stupid I’m afraid, I’d say those pictures were put up internally thing what’s the harm under the influence and taken down after someone sobered up and realized internal was not secure or more likely someone with a bit more cop at RTE pointed it out,

O’Callaghan said that as someone in the public eye, it is her job to “lead by example”.

As Catherine Connolly might ask… ‘When did you realize that it’s your job to lead by example?”

The only thing the Brits understand is brutality. A nation who colonised, enslaved, brutalised and starved its people must be treated like the monster it is.

      1. Charger Salmons

Have you asked the hundreds of thousands of Irish people who moved there to find work and chose to stay how monstrous Blighty is ?
Fantasy meets reality in much the same way that Ireland ran into a white brick wall yesterday.
You’re not very good at this contemporary history lark are you ?

        1. GiggidyGoo

Couple of blighters in ireland too. The ones with the inferiority complex take to the comment sections.

      2. Toby

Britain murdered hundreds of thousands of Irish people, and multiples of that worldwide. Blighty is a cancerous, toxic stain on history and now that its hurting, its getting dangerous again. So, Im sorry if im not going with your Billy Bunter avin’ a larf schtick Matey. You don’t get to swagger your colonial history around here.

        1. benblack

          Hundreds of thousands?

But it’s this same attitude that you display that we rebelled against.

“The anthology, anchored in the West Indian experience in London, is a celebration of all that that community has succeeded in achieving against the odds,” Steve McQueen explains. “Although all five films take place between the late 1960s and mid-1980s, they are just as much a comment on the present moment as they were then. They are about the past, yet they are very much concerned with the present. A commentary on where we were, where we are and where we want to go.”

What Freeman of the Land garbage is this? They’re citing the Magna Carta as the true law of Ireland?

      1. Cian

Chapter 61 of the Magna Carta. Which only existed in the original 1215 version (which the king was coersed to sign) it wasn’t included in the 1216 version that was freely signed.

        1. ReproBertie

The Magna Carta they refer to never applied to Ireland. The Magna Carta Hiberniae, which has no chapter 61, was signed in 1216.

See what they’re floating over in the UK. If implemented, it will surely be coming to Ireland too under the “all island approach”. The end game is to get everyone to opt into these blockchain digital identities, public health is just being used as the vehicle to do so. It’s an attack on liberal democracy as we know it

    https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/13265133/brits-freedom-passes-covid-negative-tests/

“BRITS could be given special ‘freedom passes’ to allow them to live a relatively normal life – if they have two negative Covid tests in a week.

The Telegraph reports that under the plan, people could be given the special passes if they can prove they have been regularly tested.

Those who have been given the all clear would then be given an electronic document to show they have the freedom to roam.

A source said: “They will allow someone to wander down the streets, and if someone else asks why they are not wearing a mask, they can show the card, letter or an App.”

..(Jeremy Hunt) has already said he backs “offering people who comply with testing and isolation requirements a ‘freedom pass’ that removes the requirement to follow lockdown regulations”.

However, for the scheme to be a success, millions of tests will have to take place every day.

..The hopeful (?!) news comes just five days after it was reported those who have had the vaccine may get special mobile phone QR codes to allow them access to major sporting events.

Government insiders say those who have been inoculated could be issued with some kind of digital proof showing they are immune from the virus.”

    1. Nigel

‘Suely’ is doing a lot of work there. Say what you will about our lot, they’re not exactly falling over themselves to oblige Boris’s notions.

      1. f_lawless

This is part of something much bigger. The Tory party is merely acting as facilitator to the plans of these transnational uber-wealthy elites who dictate global policies. Similar happenings are afoot in different countries across the globe.

I think it would be hard to imagine the likes of FFG’s Martin and Varakar putting up much resistance on behalf of ordinary Irish citizens to the diktats coming from the 1%ers . They’ll align themselves to the interests of big business as they always do. In fact I think current government policy regarding Covid-19 is already being heavily influenced in this way.

        https://www.rt.com/op-ed/507336-great-reset-world-economic-forum/

“If the ‘Great Reset’ really is so good for us, let’s hold a referendum on it, so it can have a democratic mandate (or not)”

  10. Shayna

The e-Scooters Law to be passed before Christmas is bizarre. As great a vehicle as they are – I’d love one, but to be fair – consider the motorists of Ireland – they’re not that great. Deaths on Ireland’s roads rank among the highest in Europe. About 20 years ago, I passed my HGV Class 1 test – during my instruction period – I was told to, “live” in my left mirror of the unit – cyclists/moped riders cut inside traffic all the time – add to this e-Scooter riders, it’s going to be carnage. One message I’d like to offer to the future e-Scooters, and also other road users is, if you can’t see the wing mirrors of a 65ft long vehicle – you’re too close!

      1. GiggidyGoo

Going by the first line in that article, we have exactly the same – 100% fatality rate of people killed in road accidents.

“Ireland had lowest fatality rate of persons killed in road incidents…”

      2. Shayna

Cian, it’s the number, as a whole, not per capita I was quoting. I think it was as recent as 2008, where drivers, untested could drive a car, legally ((With “L” plates). Also, my point was the safety of e-Scooter Riders on the road. There are a lot of eejiits on the road already, why add to the mayhem, legally?

        1. Cian

That makes no sense either. We have a small population so our total deaths will be smaller than any bigger country.

Out figures have improved hugely over the years (especially once the motorways were built). Bit we are current the safest.

  11. E'Matty

It is clear now that the presentation of the efficacy rates of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines which have been heavily promoted by the media and political class this past week is not quite telling the full picture. The key, it appears, is the difference between disease reduction efficacy and infection reduction efficacy. Here is one of the scientists behind the development of the vaccine who hopes the jab will have a 50% efficacy rate at reducing infection, which is what matters if you are expecting the whole population, including those not at risk from the virus, to receive the virus to create herd immunity. At 50%, half of people who receive the vaccine could still be potentially capable of contracting the virus and spreading it to the vulnerable and others.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/will-covid-19-vaccines-pave-path-back-to-normality-1.4414915

“The vaccine efficacy rate, 94.5 per cent and 95 per cent for the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines respectively, refer to protection against Covid-19 disease not against Sars-CoV-2 infection.”

“We have learned from experience with other infectious diseases that vaccines that do not prevent infection may not prevent transmission of a virus or bacteria in the population. For example, the current pertussis vaccine prevents children from dying from whooping cough, but does not prevent bacterial colonisation of the nose, thus allowing community transmission of the infection, resulting in periodic epidemics of whooping cough.”

The article also interestingly goes on to touch on the personal identity issue at the heart of this vaccine roll-out “The Health Service Executive, hospitals and GPs in Ireland do not have integrated IT systems and, unlike most developed countries, Ireland does not have a patient identifier number. Scanning of barcodes on every vial of vaccine before administration coupled with a patient identifier number would allow electronic recording of every individual vaccination.”

Does anyone have any information on the age profile of the subjects involved in the Pfizer and Moderna trials and whether any have pre-existing health conditions? We already know the healthy under 65 (and even most in the healthy over 65s) population are not at any serious risk from this virus. If the infection efficacy rate is at just 50%, is this a risk worth taking for parents with young children on an experimental new genetic based therapy (a method which has never successfully developed any therapy to date) in record time (just 8 months!) where the kids themselves are not at any real danger from the virus? It’ll be interesting to see which parents will allow their kids be effective guinea pigs (long term effects of these vaccines will potentially remain unknown until widely administered, as with Pandemrix), for this undefined notion of “the public health” which seems to mean whatever NPHET and the government say it does, and is myopically obsessed with a virus with a fatality rate of at most 0.23%, and likely even lower.

    1. SOQ

SARS-CoV-2 is the infection. CoVid-19.is the disease- meaning you have symptoms or sickness. A 95% efficacy against developing CoVid-19 while at moment it is about 80%- there is no such thing as asymptomatic CoVid-19- a 15% reduction so- marketing spin.

      1. Oro

Ummmm no that’s not true. Out of the control test of both larger groups, if a certain number of ‘group 1’ who got the placebo got covid, they only 5% of that number of ‘Group 2’ who got the vaccine got covid. You’re doing that thing again where you misrepresent information *whispering* on purpose.

        1. SOQ

80% of people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 never develop CoVid-19. These vaccines are claiming 95%- which is only 15% more than the pre-existing- what exactly have I missed?

          1. Oro

You’ve missed approx. 95% of the correct information. Go read about it yourself, there are explainers everywhere.

            Here’s the gist of it;

“ In a press release, the companies said that there were 170 cases of COVID-19 among participants in the trial. Of those cases, 162 were recorded in people who took a placebo, and eight were recorded in people who received the vaccine. Ten cases were severe — and nine of those severe cases occurred in the placebo group. That indicates that the vaccine protects against the deadliest forms of the disease. Moderna, which released data from its trial this week, had similar findings.”

          2. SOQ

They are claiming that these vaccines protect against the deadliest forms of the disease- the disease being CoVid-19- except 4 out of 5 people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 never develop it in the first place?

CoVid-19 vaccines will do nothing to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2- they are not designed to.

          3. Oro

Again that is incorrect. You can look this up yourself altho I see you have a pattern of requesting others to do so on your behalf?(?) once a person is infected with the virus they have Covid19, this is not determined by the presence of symptoms. It is self evident from, well, medicine generally that one not need to have symptoms to be suffering from a disease (early cancers, early stages of AIDs, all sorts of asymptomatic infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea etc.)). I think you’re fumbling the terminology so that you can misrepresent figures to play up your chaotic fantasy, but I’d suggest you do some reading (on your own and not from Twitter mind) and see for yourself what 95% efficacy means.

These vaccines will limit the spread of the virus. If a virus does not have as easy a host network it will not be as easy to spread. Thusly, it’s prevalence will be lessened. Why don’t you go and google ‘smallpox eradication’.

“Will covid-19 vaccines save lives? Current trials aren’t designed to tell us”
      https://www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4037

“If frail elderly people, who are understood to die in disproportionate numbers from both influenza25 and covid-19, are not enrolled into vaccine trials in sufficient numbers to determine whether case numbers are reduced in this group, there can be little basis for assuming any benefit in terms of hospital admissions or mortality. Whatever reduction in cases is seen in the overall study population (most of which may be among healthy adults), this benefit may not apply to the frail elderly subpopulation, and few lives may be saved.

This is hard to evaluate in the current trials because there are large gaps in the types of people being enrolled in the phase III trials (table 1). Despite recruiting tens of thousands, only two trials are enrolling children less than 18 years old. All exclude immunocompromised people and pregnant or breastfeeding women, and though the trials are enrolling elderly people, few or perhaps none of the studies would seem to be designed to conclusively answer whether there is a benefit in this population, despite their obvious vulnerability to covid-19.”

Congrats Cavan! Donegal were lacklustre. Godammit, we could have beaten Donegal today. Jesus, it’s been a bad enough year, but 6 in a row for the Dubs?

Priests who are trying to do their duty by saying Mass – the only one in the country.

            God bless Cavan.

            Hardly ranting.

Show some respect and appreciation for the result.

…total respect for the evidence of my own eyes and the grit of the Cavan lads scoring a great victory over Donegal…not respect whatsoever for priests…ranting or otherwise…don’t believe the Cavan people prayed harder than the Donegal people…

Mass is the gathering of people to receive Holy Communion from the hands of an ordained priest.

Please list the other priests and parishes ‘saying Mass’ so that I can fulfil my Catholic obligations.

Online religious services? I hear you say.

As perverse as it can get.

          4. bisted

…at least we agree on one thing, dude…that mass broadcast over the internet is indeed perverse…to have unsuspecting browsers stumble across a ritual where a man in a dress claims to change a wafer into the body of a 2000 year old carpenter…and then expect you to eat it…perverse indeed…

    1. shayna

A tad unfair – Shayna loves GAA football. I’m v. pleased for Cavan. Hurrah Cavan and all the rest of it! I did say a while back that this would be the year of upsets.
