What an intro from Brian Phillips for this 2019 piece on Maradona.

” God had knee surgery on July 24, and He was still limping six weeks later, on September 8, when He walked out of the giant inflatable wolf’s head onto the soccer pitch at the Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo, in the Argentine city of La Plata. God wore a navy Le Coq Sportif hoodie with His initials (D.M.) on the chest, a white snapback cap, two glittering earrings, and track pants. God had not shaved, though He was not exactly sporting a full beard, either—it was more of a divine scruff situation—and He looked tiny, plush, and fragile. At 58, God was technically only three years older than Brad Pitt, but he did not call to mind Brad Pitt’s older brother so much as a small gnome in Brad Pitt’s older brother’s garden. With His billowing neck, heavy features, and dramatic mouth, God looked like a toad that was about to make a scene in a nice restaurant. ”

The Sun and The Star align, and not in a good way. The small piece of text on the Daily star says “Yes, he was a cheat. BUT what a bloody amazing cheat he was.”

    Godspeed Diego Maradona

Out of all the stuff that’s been sent to me, my favourite is ‘he cut more Iines than a disabled kid at Disneyland’.
      RIP

    2. Charger Salmons

A genius and a cheat sums him up perfectly.
Different times of course. In those days oppositions just accepted the outcome and didn’t beg to become the 33rd Team in a world cup because of a deliberate handball.

      Heh x international laughing stock.

      1. Charlie

“Accepted the outcome” …Yea, right…and still they whinge. Let’s face ii, they whinge at their inevitable exit at every tournament. Bwahahaaa…

    3. Charlie

He was no more a cheat than Thierry Henry but never did so many rejoice at the demise of his arrogant victims. Thankyou Diego.

It seems our Health Service Executive is a misnomer particularly for those who have no choice but to rely on it – even if it means ‘fighting’ one’s case through the courts, or burying your child due to incompetence.

while in the UK they are planning to stop charging VAT on tampons and other women’s sanitary products in 2021.

          1. millie

It’s a joke. They are an essential hygiene product.

On a separate note, I invested in a menstrual cap to save on buying pads/tampons etc, and I’d definitely recommend. Took a couple of uses to get the knack, but well worth the money.

      RTÉ reports this differently.

      For the first death:
It is understood that he was not known to homeless outreach services and efforts were being made to identify him.

He is believed to have travelled down from Northern Ireland yesterday before spending the night in Dublin.

      and the second death:
He was also aged in his 40s, but was living in long-term sheltered accommodation and he was not classified as homeless.

      May they rest in peace.

From the article.. “At a press conference, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar initially said Ms McEntee told him Ms Morrissey worked for Mr Flanagan. However, an hour later his adviser called journalists to say Mr Varadkar had been mistaken.“

      “Adviser” = Spindoctor.
What’s the adviser’s name? Not much of an adviser actually.

        Nice burn for Ryan too.

“Mr Ryan could not be reached for comment despite several attempts to contact him through his team of eight taxpayer-funded advisers.”

Eminently sensible for Blighty to reduce its foreign aid budget at a time like this.
Perhaps the Ethiopian Spice Girls who benefited from it could help make up the shortfall.
Will be a very popular move in the country.

    1. Otis Blue

Which isn’t likely to be a problem as EU contributions are a % of Gross National Income. Y’know as Ireland generates more income, it pays more. As it should be. It’s worth mentioning that even in this year Ireland’s tax take has held up remarkably well, largely due to the CCT take from multinationals. They seem happy here.

Anyway, I’d have thought you have enough to worry about.

    2. ReproBertie

“As the commission prepares to draw up proposals on how the fund should be divided and what criteria should be used to calculate the impact of Brexit, there has been fierce lobbying by member states to tip the calculation in their favour.”

See the bit where it says “prepares to draw up proposals”? Let’s wait and see what actually happens.

As a side note, Ireland will not be the 4th biggest contributor to the new EU budget. The top 4 are Germany, France, The Netherlands and Sweden, according to the only information I can find anywhere and that’s from German media back in July, before the budget was agreed. Where did you find the figures? Presumably, since you’re slagging the IT for not publishing them, they’ve been published by other media.

      1. Charger Salmons

You don’t think it strange that even though an EU budget was agreed in July and it is now only a month away from it being implemented the people of Ireland have still not been told by either the government or media exactly how much it will cost them ?
But the German media appears to know.
Not unlike MEPs not having to declare expenses or provide invoices for them.
Dunno about you old cock but when I sign a contract I want to know EXACTLY how much it will cost me.
But hey, perhaps that’s the Irish way and sure it’ll be grand.

        Heh x 2/10/09.

        1. ReproBertie

The budget has not yet been agreed. Poland and Hungary vetoed it because there was a link made between receiving funds and obeying the rules.

Perhaps you missed my question. Where did you get the figures?

          1. Charger Salmons

            Meh, Merkel will cave in.
            http://www.eurointelligence.com/column/enhanced-cooperation
And I got my figures from the German media like you. They’re rarely wrong in EU matters as Frau Merkel always has the inside dirt.
Do you not think if they were wrong Mehole and his sycophants in the media would be creating hell ?
€15.7 billion big ones baby. Thanks to Ireland for picking up the slack after Blighty ended its payments.
Freedom, as Mel Gibson was fond of saying …

          2. ReproBertie

LOL! The German media. Of course you did. Perhaps a link to where the German media is showing Ireland as the 4th biggest contributor?

€15.7bn over 7 years is €2.2bn per year. That’s pretty much what we pay at the moment. In fact it’s less than the €2.65bn that was forecast as our contribution for 2019. Or did the German media forget to mention that when they put us as 4th largest contributor?

          3. Cian

You realise that we get money from the EU as well as contributing to it?

“According to the Court of Auditors annual report, the EU’s overall budget in 2019 was €164 billion, of which Ireland contributed €2.3 billion.”
            and also
“Last year, Ireland paid €229 million into the EU budget more than it received, an amount which represents 0.08% of Ireland’s gross national income (GNI).”

            https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2020/1109/1177074-ireland-eu-budget-contribution/

          4. Charger Salmons

You realise we’re talking about the next 7-year budget cycle and not the previous one ?
            No,perhaps you don’t.
You will when the bills start coming in though …

          5. ReproBertie

We’ll be getting money back over the lifetime of this budget too. We’ll still be net contributors but nothing like the scale being presented here.

          6. Charger Salmons

            When you’re excusing your losing.
Ireland has been caught big time by your German overlords.
Didn’t you learn anything from bailing out the bondholders ?

            Kerching Baby !

          7. ReproBertie

Once again, we were net contributors before this budget and you still haven’t provided a link to where you read in the German media that we would be the 4th largest contributor.

Meanwhile Ireland will be getting €1.3bn in the next two years from the EU’s Covid bailout. To say nothing of the €10.7bn that will be coming the way of Irish farmers over the next 7 years via the CAP. Membership has its benefits and all that.

Oh dear, disappointing news for her fellow conspiracy theory chums at the Irish Times and the other assorted anti-Brexit crackpots in the media.
    Guido Fawkes reports that ”
Late last night with the Banks v Cadwalladr hearing scheduled for 10:30 this morning, the Guardian’s Carole Cadwalladr finally admitted what we all knew, there was no evidence to back up her claims that the Russians financed the Brexit campaign or that Arron Banks was involved in shady deals with the Russians ”
She has to pay hefty legal bills although crowd-funding means it won’t come out if her pockets but those of her gullible supporters.

    1. bisted

…it’s a pity all the same because a good case could be made for getting a refund from the Russians…in the UK and even moreso in the USA…without ‘Russian help’ bungling Boris got a stonking majority in what was essentially a second referendum on Brexit and Trump added 5m to his popular vote…with those type of friends who needs enemies…

Diego Maradona was the greatest World Cup player ever! That’s where he exploded as a superstar, on the world’s biggest stage in Mexico 86. Unlike many great players after him who collapse at big occasions like the World Cup, he took it by the scruff of the neck through sheer willpower, skill, magic, leadership, surprise, and speed, he had it all! He may have cheated with the hand of God goal, but he was also the most fouled and kicked player that year, all opposition teams tried to injure him, that’s also cheating, but he was too strong. And that 2nd goal against England in 86 was glorious and dream like in every way. The greatest!

    RIP Diego Maradona

ps-big decision in SCOTOS against any restrictions,on religion in NY,but having pints is almost, religious in Ireland.

      1. Johnny

-Just before midnight on the night before Thanksgiving, the Supreme Court blocked New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo from enforcing attendance limits at religious services. The vote is 5-4, with Roberts and the three liberals dissenting.-

        Here is the ruling.
