Gemma Hayes – Hanging Around
Continuing our series of underrated Irish music since 1960, reader Ben Madigan advocates for indie queen Gemma Hayes (top) from Ballyporeen, County Tipperary.
Hanging Around is a single from her debut album Night On My Side, released in 2002 by French indie label Source. The video was directed by John ‘The Proposition‘ Hillcoat.
Now living in West Cork, Gemma is working on a new album due for release next year.
Nick says: The best Hayes of our lives.
My God this is good. What a talent she is.
I often wondered why she never became a bigger star, she seemed to have it all: great voice, killer tunes, cool indie look, not to mention being a stunner. She always seemed quite shy in interviews and performing live, I wonder did that hold her back? Or maybe she was over-looked because she was a woman playing rock music?
I think you’re right: never seemed comfortable promoting herself – whether shyness or just didnt like that side of the business
Gemma was always great and a natural stunner in a world of over sexualised pop slappers.
