Fantastic lolz to watch all those British politicians and their media cheerleaders who tried to thwart the implementation of a referendum in which 33.5 million people voted now up on their hind legs claiming a largely peaceful protest in DC was an attack on democracy.
    Marvellous.

          1. bisted

…do you remember the last time a right wing mob invaded the Capital Building in an attempt to overthrow the democratic process…they succeeded…sleepy Joe and the Real Democrats were all for it then…it was in Kiev…but the wrong type of democracy…not Nigel approved…

          2. bisted

…if citizens decide that their preferred outcome is such a foregone conclusion that they need not participate in the process, the democratic process is not determined or diminished by the level of participation…the continuity Democrats learned their lesson and got their vote out…your man won Nigel…

          3. bisted

…a bit like the continuity Democrats will be…they have four years of no new wars to make up for…where do you think will be first Nigel…probably wherever the zionists decide…

          4. bisted

…Putin will be quaking in his boots when he realises the Yanks haven’t lost their talent for staging coups…they are so keen they even staged a domestic one…

I’ll play a bit of whataboutary. If something similar happened innthe Palace of Westminster and some Kipper types, outraged at not achieving their panacea of a no deal brexit, stormed the security and were found lolling around on the Sovereign’s Throne, you’d have an aneurysm.

Now, before you say it, that could of course never happen. Because I can say hand of heart, having had many meetings and received tours of both buildings, the security at Westminster is far superior than the Capitol.

I’ll also add that it was rather surprising to find that the Sovereign’s Throne is so tatty and threadbare.

A woman was shot and killed inside the capitol. How sad for her. She was lied to and is dead now. Tell her family it was peaceful see what they say. These people are anti-democratic. They’re protesting because they didn’t get their way.

The main reason that there weren’t more deaths is because the police allowed them to do whatever they liked.

On a separate note how restricted is your brain that the only way something can exist in a complex way for you is when it’s placed in relation to whatever mess the UK is in? Some things can happen in a way that doesn’t require them to be entered in some kind of weird starter position scramble. The troll allegations would be less believable if occasionally you could offer some more independent thought.

Charger – show me where a majority voted for this specific Brexit. It is a tad different to what was promised on the side of a bus and by a pack of lying Tories.

What’s the latest poll figures for Bozo clown man? You’ve been very quiet on that front recently. I wonder why!

    5. Charger Salmons

FOUR DEAD ! scream the headlines.
Actually a woman was accidentally shot by US Capitol Police and three others died in “medical emergencies”.
” Capitol police engaged in a shoot-out in at least one of the two chambers ” is the ludicrous claim in the risible Irish Times.
You’d see more aggro on a busy night in Temple Bar – during the pandemic.

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

medical emergencies, gave themselves heart attacks walking up the hill ?

      2. ReproBertie

        “a woman was accidentally shot”

        Speaking of ludicrous claims
        “Cobblers you old mattress soaker.
Flash bang grenades from the police.
        No shots have been fired.”

        1. Charger Salmons

          From the New York Times.

‘ The few police officers standing on the steps of the Capitol were overwhelmed. Their flash bang grenades only invigorated the protesters. ‘

A shot was fired later when a Capitol police officer’s gun went off accidentally.

          No protestor fired any shots.

          Up your game loser.

          1. ReproBertie

You might show me where I said any protestor fired shots, loser.

Remember, your ludicrous claim was in response to me posting that it had been confirmed that a woman had been shot, loser.

          2. Charlie

Fatalities or not you’re basically condoning the behaviour of the scrotes. You really are a Millwall supposer I guess. Awww rite my saaan!

          3. Charlie

I know! The Millwall supporters club won’t be happy when they hear Tommy Charger is in the gang.

          4. Charger Salmons

            I haven’t condoned anything.
If you had a tad more intelligence you’d understand my posts are merely about the over-the-top reporting of the incident compared with other outbreaks of civil disobedience in the US recently.
Personally I couldn’t give a toss either way about the rights or wrongs of what happened. It has no impact on my life.
And I ‘suppose’ Spurs not Millwall.

          5. Charlie

Steady on Tommy. I don’t SUPPOSE you’ve told your Millwall mates down at the Den about your transfer request? All together now!

Charger, you are hilarious. You are obviously a joke account or professional troll. Bodge must give you a kicker for whipping up debate on this site. No one is that dim. I admit, I have even fell for it myself.

Again with your whataboutism. Seriously, you need a new tactic. Do you really see no difference between the Remoaners efforts to delay/thwart Brexit (all within the rules of institutions) and a rabble of gullible poodles storming into the buildings of govt? In fact, as far as illegal actions go, was it not Boris who acted outside law by proroguing parliament and was slapped down by the British Supreme Court?

But of course, everything is equivalent to you, you cannot discern contextual differences and therefore all criticism is hypocritical.

Bodge, can I get a similar deal to the muffin man here?

          1. scottser

you don’t debate though charger. you just leave a pile of spaff lying around. any time someone challenges your ‘assertions’ you just go back to bed for another tug.

The insanity of last night on the US news. My God! It was appalling that they let Trump do this, everybody knew he would push for a day of violence as he threw his toys out of the pram. Was this the BIG DAY that the Trump cultists and Qanon zombies were talking about? If so, kudos to you!

That was more ridiculous and brain dead than anything I imagined. Also how did the Capitol building Police handle this so so badly? I mean, we all knew Trump would incite violence, how were they not prepared? Total incompetence! Policing is still a massive problem across the USA. They are poorly trained, cowardly, and disorganised.

Four people dead, more to come I’m afraid. Hopefully some influential Americans can defuse the threat of violence.

This is all on Trumps head. He is mentally ill and needs to be taken away to the Mental hospital.

*Oh yeah, Police also found multiple pipe bombs they had to diffuse around the Capitol building. “Law & Order!”

        1. Iian-Oh

Many of the police took the day off to drape themselves in Confederate flags to “storm the capitol”.

At this stage, openly admitting to supporting Trump is no different to saying you are a racist and a facist.

They would have shot black protestors for far less.

          1. Charlie

I watched Sky new last night whilst this was all unfolding. Talk about hype. I thought the world was coming to an end. Sky are every bit as shyte as the rest. Stop watching so much news! Once a day is plenty.

    – For anyone interested in an intelligent, honest, bi-partisan and oftten hilarious analysis by someone who hates both sides of the ridiculous ‘murican political circus of hypocrasy..

In summary, he’s asking the questions nobody in the 95% of corporate media wants tolerated, let alone answered..

e.g. Why are the police allowing some of the protesters into the grounds of capitol hill..
Why are they being treated like just some fun loving bunch of football fans, having a good time..
Aren’t all protesters supposed to be smeshed into the floor equally?..

Is it because there is a strangely symbiotic relationship between the police and law and order republican party?…

The contrast between how these Chump MAGAts are being treated and how BLM/ordinary black people minding their own business, are treated is an outrage. I don’t understand how these idiots were allowed get within a mile of the Capitol. Had they been BLM, they would have been shot for lots of the things this mob got away with. At best, it is incompetence but it is not that.

was a separate situation to the BLM.

Let me know BLM try to take over a Govt. building.

          1. Junkface

All rioting and destruction by mobs is idiotic. Right wing & left wing.

Sorry to say that Antifa / BLM did take over Gov’t buildings in Portland and Seattle months ago, but they were smaller court houses. They also got close to 10 people murdered during the CHAZ/CHOP hippy nightmare. There were also rapes, and sexual assaults.

Again, local Gov’t failed to allow prosecutions after these mobs were arrested and let them straight back onto the streets, the Police had their hands tied.

America is a mess because many people in power have ‘narratives’ to follow.

MPs were taking evidence on how new rules on imports from Great Britain to Northern Ireland were working. They were told some British companies were not aware of how to comply and that had caused difficulty. Six lorries on the first ferry arriving in Belfast on 1 January were delayed because of incomplete paperwork. Six out of 15 lorry loads had not been pre-notified and when officials checked the manifest in Belfast it simply said “food”, the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee was told.”

Quite a lot (an awful lot) of UK companies have not done anything to prepare for this. You’d be very surprised at large household names who are scurrying around at the moment wondering where it all went wrong, and have stock building up in their export bays.

There’s a few (a lot less than a lot) Irish / Northern Irish companies that aren’t prepared either. Giving Simon Coveney, his department and Revenue their due, there was a concerted effort over the past two years to highlight what was coming down the line. So irish companies will know, or at least have a good idea what’s up. A lot of UK ones however did the old laissez faire, and they’re suffering now.

There’s no point in any vehicle arriving at port without a Pre Boarding Notification. They won’t get past the security, much less onto the ship. If they do have the PBN and get onto the ship, and haven’t organized import formalities on the far side, then they will remain at the port until they do.

Simples, but not if you’re unprepared.

      1. ReproBertie

I think the lack of preparation in Northern Ireland may well be intentional on some part. Ian Paisley is citing the problems as grounds for invoking Article 16 and removing the Northern Ireland Protocol.

      2. Charger Salmons

‘ Quite a lot (an awful lot) of UK companies have not done anything to prepare for this. You’d be very surprised at large household names …’

Well Charger, I’m not going to sully any UK company’s reputation here because they’ve failed to prepare. You’ll find out quickly enough when there’s a delay in supply of goods.

          1. Charger Salmons

In other words it’s a figment of your imagination.
            A fabrication.

Here’s a little taster, from a company mentioned in news.

Week one post Brexit and @marksandspencer Newbridge has next to no fresh food. Empty shelves which would normally be full of fresh produce are now being padded with bottled water and packaged cheese. Impossible to do food shop.

M&S ‘“Due to a [IT] systems issue, some of our products are unavailable”

M&S again. ‘M&S said it was “working closely” with partners and suppliers to ensure customers can continue to enjoy the same range of products, and that it was working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, apologizing to its Irish customers for the inconvenience.

Go educate yourself. Or go back to your Walter Mitty world of ‘The Italian Job’ or ‘Escape To Victory’ and hum along. Ta raa

          3. Charger Salmons

So M&S had an IT issue in their system and they’re working closely with their partners.
This has nothing to do with your spurious claim that a lot of household names have done nothing to prepare for the new trading arrangements.
Stop now before you make an even bigger fool of yourself than you already are.
Name names or get off the pot.

          4. GiggidyGoo

            Unlike you, I don’t lie.
Remember the time you told us you knew of two pubs selling out of date beer during the first lockdown….? You know, the pubs that could return the barrels for a refund, so wouldn’t have to sell?
Or your on-street parking near Heathrow to save parking charges at the airport car park?

          2. ReproBertie

In fairness, those relatives may well be concerned with the news that the UK had 62,322 new cases and 1,041 deaths yesterday. That and the mess they are making of distributing the vaccines might well be of interest to the relatives of Irish people living in the UK.

          3. Charger Salmons

I’ve never compared case numbers or fatalities between any country in the pandemic because in most instances it’s like comparing apples with pears.
But if you must – Ireland’s case numbers yesterday (almost 8,000), were 68% higher that those in the UK (62,000) on the basis of respective population numbers.

          4. ReproBertie

I wasn’t comparing anything, that’s your schtick but only when it allows you to assuage your inferiority complex by showing the UK in a good light of course.

Where are all the smart commenters telling us that it is a “casedemic”,asking which hospitals have been overrun in the last 8 months, saying all the vulnerable had already died, that the virus had evolved into a less harmful one, that it was possible to protect the vulnerable, etc?

    1. f_lawless

I could spend some time setting out an argument trying to reason with you, but is there any point really? I would put you firmly in the category as described in this article:

      https://lockdownsceptics.org/moral-truth-and-the-failed-strategy-of-lockdown-sceptics/

“We have to face facts: most people simply accept the mainstream narrative, and with the prospect of the magic spell of a vaccine in the offing, there is little incentive for them to change their minds. The thinking of the great majority of our fellow citizens can be summarised as: a few more months of this and then it will be spring, things will be back to normal, and we can forget about all of this.

..the reality is that most people are just not actually interested in finding out the truth for themselves. They are much more interested in conforming with what they perceive to be what one could call the ‘moral truth’ – the prevailing moral norm. The prevailing moral norm of 2020 is: lockdowns are the ethically right thing to do because they keep vulnerable safe from dying. To argue against that moral norm is, by definition, both immoral and abnormal. This is the most salient factor in governing behaviour in our society right now.

Lockdown sceptics have made all kinds of important, well-reasoned, fact-based arguments against the lockdowns and other restrictions that have been imposed upon us. .. None of it has cut through, because most people just don’t respond to fact-based argument. They respond to what they consider to be the moral truth. More importantly, they really don’t respond to fact-based argument if that would mean owning up to being immoral and abnormal. If in order to change your mind you have to become a pariah, then human psychology 101 provides a quick answer: you won’t change your mind…

..We quite clearly live in an emotional age – one in which ‘don’t kill your granny’ is a more effective argument than any Ivor Cummins video. So emotion has to be emphasised. What do lockdowns mean emotionally? They mean suicides. They mean depression and anxiety. They mean school closures which harm children’s life chances. They mean rising inequality. They mean cancelled hospital treatments. They mean poverty and economic devastation in the developing world. They mean lack of hugs and family and social warmth. It is not that we haven’t talked about all of these things. But we haven’t talked about them enough. We have to acknowledge that while we have all manner of fantastic knock-down factual arguments and statements of principle against all of this nonsense, people aren’t interested to hear them: nobody wants to be knocked-down, fantastically or otherwise. People want to conform with what they perceive to be a moral truth. So we have to set about generating that. We have to start talking not about numbers or rights, but about the human tragedy that lockdown has created. We need stories about real people, real sadness, real misery, real illness. It’s not charts, graphs, numbers or science that will convince people. It’s establishing a moral truth that matters.

        What are you saying?

Are you saying that lockdowns don’t reduce Covid?

Or that lockdowns cause more harm than not locking down?

Because it comes across as #1.

      2. Junkface

I don’t think anyone likes lockdowns. I hate them, but if we all just did them correctly in the first place and did not insist on summer travel to holiday covid 19 hotspots, then we would not be in the position we are today all across Europe. Lockdowns are harmful to everyone’s mental health, that is evident.

Same goes for wearing a mask. I am erring on the side of caution to help my local community stop the virus spreading. If everyone just came to some sort of agreement much earlier, we could be in the same position as Taiwan or countries close by. Be an adult, think of others, think of all of our shared contributions to this effort. It only takes a few people to not comply at all to keep the virus spreading alive, because it’s highly contagious.

And that f_lawless is the reason why I am becoming increasingly weary of commenting on Broadsheet.

This criminality started with ‘the science says’ but when it was proved that the science does not say, it moved onto morality. There is no room for critical thinking with morality- new or old so ban the sales of all alcohol yeah?

And when I quote someone like Sunetra Gupta, left wing communitarian and champion of the poor, that makes me a Trump supporter and right wing conspiracy theorist apparently- I must do the ironing.

Usually by someone with stated homophobic tendencies- I am ironing the cat at this stage.

Statistically lockdowns reduce transmission in the very short term- but at what cost? And what happens then? Seasons? Who knew?

A politician waving the high hand that we will be under house arrest until March is one who has just said hand stuck up his or her own bum.

Fix the health care provision- fund it properly- NOW.

          2. Cian

You agree that lockdowns work. good start.

A lockdown until the winter Covid season is passed and then the vaccine gets rolled out before next season it is a good approach? No?

Doing nothing isn’t an option. Level 3 isn’t an option – look at December.

There are 1000+ Covid cases in hospital. That is double what it was last week. Without lockdown that could be 2,000 next week; 4,000 the week after, 8,000 by the end of the month.

No amount of funding could cope with that level of hospitalisation.

DO you still think we should emulate Sweden? They have another 3,000 dead in the last 2 months.

          4. Cian

thanks – from your link: Sweden’s excess deaths have been above “normal range” for the last 6 weeks and “Substantially increased” for the last 3! (ignoring the last 2 weeks as they have insufficient data).

Lockdowns work if you control the people who might bring the virus into your jurisdiction. In Australia, all new arrivals go into hotel quarantine for 14 days. So, we had a long lockdown in Melbourne, then 60 days of zero local transmission. The big problem is that hotel quarantine is risky. The quarantine should be in remote places with dedicated staff so that there are no leaks. Yes, lockdowns are hard but they are easier if you can achieve something at the end. Life here is close to normal with mask wearing in shops/indoors. That is much healthier than the pain of death and worrying about people I care about dying from this. Our hospitals are not over run and normal medical procedures are happening.

          – See my comment above. Melbourne and Victoria are virus-free. The borders must be controlled for it to be worthwhile.

    Germany calling, Germany calling.
‘ The sclerotic and sluggish EU machine has, unforgivably, botched the roll-out of the vaccines, and the consequences are likely to prove fatal to many thousands of our citizens ‘ ( Ireland included )
‘ Anyone who still doubts the wisdom of Brexit needs only to look at the vaccine chaos unfolding across the Channel — and think again. ‘
