Blame It On The Boozy

From left: Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health Dr Tony Holohan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group Professor Philip Nolan and Dr Ronan Glynn at the Department of Health press briefing last night

Last night.

Professor Philip Nolan – chair of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group – told the briefing that at no time since the start of the pandemic in March had it exceeded 1.4 or 1.6 (the R rate)…

Prof Nolan said this was certainly, “at least in part explained by the very high levels of socialisation and social contact” in the last weeks of December

Meanwhile, curbs on the sale of alcohol by forcing off-licences to cut their opening hours may be the next step in the fight against the Covid-19 crisis after chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan warned it is helping to fuel the spread of the virus.

Hic.

Absolutely totally agree. I’m a bit of a chancer but seeing antics around Grafton St and the city centre before Xmas you could see this coming. Sick of publicans crying as well. So many are responsible, I’ve managed some places but so many of them are also charlatans.

      1. spud

I’d reckon chances of the virus spreading from these outdoor meet up are very low.
After many of the BLM marches, there wasn’t a notable increase in cases.

It’s the indoor house parties and get togethers that are the problem.

    2. Jonner

      nonsense.

forcing everyone to buy their alcoholic drinks in a shorter timeframe will just increase contacts in the booze aisles of the supermarkets and off licences

restructwd trade hours will not achieve less socialisation

  1. MARCOPOLO

Agreed, need to put a curb on sales of bread and milk also, due to congregation in shops etc, fp it mobile phones as well. Cut the networks off that way Gen Z’s wont have a clue how to meet up. Cut it all off lads. Great work. And thanks a mill for an unreal vaccine roll out. The end is in sight. Plumbs.

    1. Charlie

Funny but can’t see the desperate for a drink shower gathering in Sth William St drinking milk.
Ah yes, the demon drink, our second biggest disease after gambling.

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I don’t think they are desperate for a drink, more desperate to see other humans.

A year now, since I’ve been out for a meal, or even a drink.

The pleasure of a nice night out. Rare enough for us, what with kids and that, but god you do miss it when it’s not an option.

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I love a mosey on my own, I love having a partner don’t get me wrong but I really enjoy the solitary glass or just chatting to strangers maybe or dinner on my own, somewhere nice but indulgent,
splash out on a nice meal no concessions made, maybe do a bit of people watching

          2. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

it’s a real blow to your independence not being off for a dander no questions asked no answers given :)

            +1

I discovered the rare treat that is dining alone a few years ago, and it’s a very nice experience. Himself enjoys a quiet pint with his paper the odd time too.

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

            where ?
I’m thinking more of people living in apartments in town, maybe alone,
it’s not my idea of a good time, you’d have to be pretty desperate of have thought

          2. Cian

If you can meet someone in town for a pint outside a pub; you can meet them in town for a walk.
            The pint is optional.

          3. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

What of you don’t know many people ?
When I came back first I found ally friends busy with kids etc,
I relied on a mooch around to have a natter,
I’m just playing devils advocate here, isn’t it nicer to have a drink at home in front of the fire if it’s really the drink you’re after

  2. ( ̄_, ̄ ) AKA Frilly Keane

I’m going with the “Ye First lads” approach here

like, why don’t ye get it together First
Nursing Homes, Testing, Contract Tracing, PPE & ICU Equipment Supplies, Hospital Management, Vaccination Roll out, Air & Sea Arrivals & Departures, PUP, Childcare, Schools, Leaving Cert Exams, whatever yere having yerselves

Then tell the rest of us where and when and how we should take a drink

      1. ( ̄_, ̄ ) AKA Frilly Keane

        management
        treatment
        and all the other stuff

is better than waiting for the cure

        a year now C!an
and there still isn’t anything beyond lockdown to manage this virus

But all these people got full pay, plus plus plus
feck why didn’t I incorporate and present a tender to supply PPE

        1. Cian

If you look at Ireland and compare to the rest of Europe, we are doing better than most – especially in the last 6 months.

Why are you so against people getting paid for their work?

          1. ( ̄_, ̄ ) AKA Frilly Keane

I’m not against anyone getting paid

I have a problem with incompetence and unaccountability

And frankly, this comparing Ireland’s performance to other countries is pathetic, pointless and very shabby PR C!an

Its insulting. And worthy of an apology tbh

This Government and NPHET and the HSE and all the others connected parties responsible for Governance, Pandemic Management and getting the Irish through this, and out the other side are answerable and accountable to us here
Us. Here. Ireland. hows that for a three word tag
Not in the other Countries you are measuring our shower against

            Us. Here. Ireland.
Whether you like it or not

And they have made a hames of it
            From day one
Not one person engaged in the Pandemic Management from Governement, Acting Government or Dept this and thats as actually either delivered as promised, or even reached expectation.

            They have all fallen short.

            A year on
the HSE have gotten worse, as if that were possible, worse

So, since you’re in the humour to weewee me off,
Lets have yere spins again about the Army Track n Trace teams
the photocalls out in City West
            HSE CEO with Cargo Planes
            Fridges
Bruton in the Kitchen, Leo with his top off
the 100s and thousands Healthcare pros coming back to work / volunteer
The spins through the testing centres

            g’wan
I’m doing up that Government Ethics and Probity etc from a few years ago for 2021
            I need the motivation

Worth adding that if – as I have always suspected, the then Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar was aware of this disaster coming down the line last January when he fell over himself getting to the Aras to call a General Election
And we do know the virus was well established here then
Then Leo needs to answer for it

          2. Cian

            moan, moan, moan.
all you can do is point the finger.
typical Irish begrudgary. You can only see the bad.

And then regurgitate the conspiracy theory that Leo somehow knew a global pandemic was coming (the first death was reported on 11 Jan) so he called an election (on the 14 Jan). And yet he still ended up in government.

As conspiracy theories go it makes less sense than the ones SOQ and f_lawless and Bodger come up with. (and that is saying a lot)

          3. SOQ

Exactly what conspiracy theories do I come up with Cian? Please outline. Trying to paint everyone who has any issues with this criminality as being a conspiracy theorist is at best disingenuous.

We are in the middle of a lockdown social experiment never tried before, with no evidence that in the medium or long term it actually works, based on a PCR test which has been proven to be not fit for purpose, with experimental vaccines not approved by the FDA, for a public whom if under 70 with no underlying conditions are of no or little risk from serious CoVid-19 symptoms in the first place.

            Nothing conspiratorial there- just facts.

          4. Cian

vaccine causing bell’s palsy; PCR test not working; Sweden being a country to emulate; the fact that there simply cannot be a second wave of Covid; it’s just a flu; only kills the old and sick; there are no excess deaths; it’s just a flu; lockdowns don’t work; the great reset, Sweden’s second wave peaked in November; it’s not “Covid” it’s SARS-CoVid-19… practically every weird theory except if being causes by 5G and Bill Gates (unless you did say that and i missed it)

          5. ReproBertie

Don’t forget all the voter fraud stuff Cian. All that guff about the dominion machines being set to change votes, connected to the internet etc.

          6. SOQ

Ah here- you can do better than that sort of mudslinging nonsense- comms is your game after all.

Will you- with a low probability of developing serious CoVid-19 symptoms- be willing to risk being pumped with something which may encourage one or more autoimmune diseases?

Given that old skool Oxford is the primary within NI- we will find out which is which I expect.

  3. Mr. T

Nanny statism & NPHET trying to enforce an anti-alcohol agenda despite no real evidence that alcohol or inebriation is responsible for the spread.

  4. Charger Salmons

I checked the wine cellar last night.
Enough booze to keep me going till Autumn.
    Fail to prepare etc
Not quite sure why they’re thinking of this now – I order a lot of my stuff online anyway so apart from the bushing crowd what’s the point ?

    1. Charlie

“I checked under the stairs last night. Enough Blue Nun and Santa Rita to keep me going until the end of the month”
      Fixed that for ya.

        1. Charlie

Indeed. Lots of plummy notes and a hint of spice. Tommy has a bucket load of little 187.5ml bottles stored in the hot press.

    1. spud

This this and all of this.

THe radio ads saying ‘we all need to do this’ has worn too thin.

We should have kept doing what we were doing.
Harris is trying to deflect the stupid decisions to reopen so much so early in Dec.

We went from one of the best in Europe to one of the worst in a couple of weeks.

      1. Cian

Are you suggesting that the current lockdown should be in place until we get 85% of the population vaccinated?

        1. Anonomanom

We should never have been opened up the way we did. We would not be such a state if the government didn’t actively promote people going mental before Xmas, wtf did they think people would do when being told “be good for a weeks and you can have a nice December”. The shops in town ended up jam packed.

          1. Redundant Proofreaders Society

            Agreed.
Blaming this on alcohol is a cop-out.
This debate would be constructive if folk stopped sharing their hero stories about staying away from pints for the last 10 months. It’s a far bigger issue.

      2. Lilly

Agree. They should have left us at level 3 rather than creating the pent-up desire for shenanigans.

  5. MARCOPOLO

Oh wait for the queues outside the offo’s or supermarkets at *6PM just before curfew kicks in on day 1 of this pointless ploppadoo. A nice vid spreadder situation there. I know what we’ll do.. put a ban on queues.
