This seems like an important announcement made today by the WHO: they’ve issued new requests to lab professionals and testers.in relation to how a Covid case should be diagnosed.
https://twitter.com/EthicalSkeptic/status/1352007326451044355
“PCR positive is no longer = Covid. You are not Covid now unless you get a second test to confirm it, and are presenting clinical symptoms. We shall see what the net impact of this indeed is.”
Seems that a logical assumption would be that, as a consequence, reported case rates will likely go into decline (or at least give a more accurate picture). It will also prevent some deaths being misattributed to Covid. Those health-care workers who are having to self-isolate due to positive PCR test alone, would no longer have to do so – which would ease the strain on health services, helping to save more lives.
Naturally one wonders why this change in guidelines is only being made now and why it didn’t happen long ago. Is it all just cynical politics at play were any drop off that results specifically from the new change will be credited to the introduction of the vaccines? I can see how it would make it harder to get a clear picture of the vaccines’ efficacy.
Brother Barnabas
theres nothing new in that – simply reiterates guidance issued last September
Brother Barnabas
and important to note, too, that the words in italics in f_lawless’s comments are not from the WHO release – it’s an anonymous Twitter account’ clearly biased, agenda-driven ‘take’ on things. and, of course, as is standard now, it entirely misrepresents the WHO doc. it’s really just sad at this stage.
Unfortunately, it is not a “casedemic” as some were imploring here. I listen to epidemiologists, not YouTube fat idiots.
dav
but they would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for f-lawless and his TRUTH…
Cian
The WHO document actually says:
“WHO guidance Diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2 states that careful interpretation of weak positive results is needed (1). The cycle threshold (Ct) needed to detect virus is inversely proportional to the patient’s viral load. Where test results do not correspond with the clinical presentation, a new specimen should be taken and retested using the same or different NAT technology.”
This is only relevant to “weak” positive results where there are no symptoms.
If you are symptomatic and have any (weak/strong) positive test == Covid
If you are asymptomatic and have a strong positive test == Covid
If you are asymptomatic and have a week positive test == retest… and if this is negative == No Covid
If you are asymptomatic and have a week positive test == retest… and if this is also ‘weak’ positive == Covid
Secondly, this isn’t new. This has been the case since 11 September 2020 – they refer to this document ‘Diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2’ [ https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/diagnostic-testing-for-sars-cov-2%5D that states “Careful interpretation of weak positive NAAT results is needed, as some of the assays have shown to produce false signals at high
Ct values. When test results turn out to be invalid or questionable, the patient should be resampled and retested.”
f_lawless
I note that Prof Carl Heneghan, he of the Centre for Evidence-based Medicine, Oxford and expert witness at the Oireachtas Covid Committee hearing, felt the WHO update from yesterday sufficiently important to mention on his twitter account.
As far as I’m aware, it was not part of the WHO instructions that date back to September to relay this information back to doctors or health authorities. I would have thought this was key information in the decision making process?
Another point regarding retesting, is it true or not that people in a community setting who get a positive test result but don’t display symptoms are not being called in again for another test? They’re simply told to quarantine and added to the case count

Memorable front pages for sure! I like the Silence is golden one from the new European. I want to see Trump getting in trouble in court with the SDNY. They have a big case coming up against him for fraud. New York state could do him in.
That crowd in NY, that patrol Wall Street etc, are relentless
And their record shows a number of things,
Their intolerance for any form of financial and securities fraud, even petty cash level planning stage stuff
their impeccable professional standards & track record – legally and financial,
their ability to secure severe sentences for conviction wins, and most importantly
Their independence
Nobody gets any special treatment – circumstances prevailing of course, every defendant is a criminal to them
no matter how big a tv star they are
It is one of the very few promises of being an ‘Merickan I really envy
They have zero tolerance for white collar crime
Once you’re caught – you’re done
If they do, and there’s every reason to expect they will pursue the former President and other members of his immediate family
It will be uglier than Trump’s entire term
Good news for Trump is that Sidney has clocked a lot of billable hours defending lads in this particular legal parish (Enron Exec for example)
Enough to know the darker side of Wall Street more than anyone in his contacts
Don’t be surprised for a succession of visits to various Gulf States to see friends
Or even Russia…..
Maybe even Namibia, a sunny well got location, which is growing in popularity with people who like to keep out of reach, but maintain a high level of security, and don’t care who knows it
If I was doing a midnight flit to keep my dirty money to myself

Chump’s Corner is like Hotel California – once I check them in they never leave.
You can feel their hurt every day on here though.
Heh x infinity and beyond.

Defending the bullied is sycophancy, now?
Strange times, indeed.
The way you do it, and to whom you’re doing it to, yes, yes indeed.
Keep up.
Such advancements – must keep up.
Joe Biden really looking his age in some of those photos. I sincerely hope he stays well and healthy and sees out his term.
Montenegro btw, that’s where ye’ll find me
Yes it sure will be interesting to watch how these fraud charges unfold. I mean Trump has avoided actual justice his whole, disgusting, spoilt child life. Fraud, theft, rape allegations, not paying contractors, destroying small businesses. There is a backlog of Karma waiting.
If there’s a conviction, or more, to be got in NY South
It will be got
I wouldn’t put any trust in karma
It’s never worked when I expected it to do its thing
Ha ha! True
All lining up to kiss Joes wrinkly ass. Should be fun. Four years of gaffs and corruption and hopefully a few new wars. Hooray!
He wasn’t even Obama’s first choice last time round.
An early stage-dementia President with a crack-smoking son who has mired both of them in corruption and grift allegations not pursued by a bottom-sniffing media ?
I am so going to enjoy the next five years.
*slaps top of next five years* Charger can fit so much fake laughter into this bad boy.
you sound like you’re enjoying it already!
hehehehe x Poor Charger
Poor, poor charger.
Just another example of your biased, negative mindset clown man. Just like Bozo, you are a fan of Trump and are incapable of writing anything negative about him. I’m not a fan of Trump, but I appreciate he has done some good things for his country, but also a lot of bad things. Same for Bozo. And Biden will be the same, he will do good and bad, how much, I don’t know yet. But your limited mentality can’t see the good in Biden or the bad in Trump or Bozo. Marvelous.
I for one am seriously enjoying chargers seething resentment and impotent rage.
More of this.
The lawn-mowing kid at the White House is one of the iconic images from the Trump presidency.

121,900 first doses of the vaccine administered as of yesterday.
https://covid19ireland-geohive.hub.arcgis.com/
Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!
So that works out at an average of 6371 per day since the overall figures were last published.
320,874 vaccine doses administered just in England alone yesterday.
But hey, the EU saved a few bob …
All together now!

Tractor, the Irish banks’ instant money-transfer app planned to take on the likes of Revolut and N26, has hit its first stumbling block.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) pushed back the Tractor application to set up a joint venture by Ireland’s high street banks because they did not provide enough information.
Quelle surprise.
I’ve banked for years with AIB & BOI and their IT systems are early 2000’s in their effeciency.
Why would anyone bother their hole setting up an account with Tractor when everyone under the age of 30 already has one with a neo-bank that took 5 minutes to set up online without the need to prostrate before some spotty bank ckerk in polyester trousers with a leaking Biro in his shirt pocket ?
