Later this morning.

Good times.

Meanwhile…

This afternoon.

Via Independent.ie:

Christine McTiernan is arguing she has the constitutional right to earn a living and should be allowed to operate despite businesses being closed under Level 5 restrictions.

C&N Beautyroom in Balbriggan opened to clients today and the phone was engaged for most of the morning. Gardai are currently at the premises.

Ms McTiernan said: “…my common law rights to provide for my family cannot be overturned. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everybody for their support.”

It’s not up to him when he decides to reopen his restaurant. What a selfish willy. We’re in a Health Emergency.

    1. frank

A health emergency you say and yet … 55k came in from uk with that variant, now over 1500 from Brazil. That’s like pouring petrol on a fire and telling people it’s under control

    2. Just Sayin

      Sara,
we had a ‘health emergency’ if you want to call it that back in April 2020. Since then the undertakers havn’t been any busier than they usually are.

The odd thing about the ‘health emergency’ in April 2020 is that it happened in April rather than January.
Old fashioned ‘trolley crises in the HSE emergencies’ occurred in Jan 2017 & 2018 and in both cases more people died than in April 2020. But as they didn’t have a ‘novel’ label applied to them we simply didn’t notice.

      1. MacGafraidh

Can you validate that with numbers instead of generic nonsense? Have you looked at the death cases in Q2 2020 versus the year previous? Funny how the stats disagree or maybe that one, possibly none undertakers you spoke to are lazy?

    3. eoin

We are in a health emergency…but if small businesses like this don’t force a reopening we’ll be in an economic depression worse than anything anyone alive has seen. The death, destruction and general chaos from that will dwarf the effects of a virus (with a 99.5% survival rate for the majority of people). Wake up!!!!!!

Isn’t there something about a broadcaster not allowed to give a platform to someone that is going against the rules? Like a comreg thing? I dunno I could be wrong, probably am wrong but it seems a few businesses are already opening as they can’t afford not to.

To me this is a symptom of awful government leadership and lack of strategy.

  3. TypeONegative

Myself I’d been thinking of selling hard drugs and machineguns to children because the day job isn’t working out so well in this climate. I might give that a shot so, seeing as I’ve apparently the constitutional right to earn a living.

edit: I just had a quick scan of the constitution there – its not long – and I don’t see anything about breaking the law, so nevermind :(

It’s mentioned in a roundabout way below. ‘have the right to an adequate means of livelihood’

      ARTICLE 45
The principles of social policy set forth in this Article are intended for the general guidance of the Oireachtas. The application of those principles in the making of laws shall be the care of the Oireachtas exclusively, and shall not be cognisable by any Court under any of the provisions of this Constitution.
1 The State shall strive to promote the welfare of the whole people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may a social order in which justice and charity shall inform all the institutions of the national life.
2 The State shall, in particular, direct its policy towards securing:–
i That the citizens (all of whom, men and women equally, have the right to an adequate means of livelihood) may through their occupations find the means of making reasonable provision for their domestic needs.

Jesus all we’re short now is a Kerry variant

on good news tho’, Dad got round one today
Not that I’m any more convinced he’s going to be sound
it was the messing around about when he was actually getting it that was ticking me off

The last three Mondays – appointments cancelled
He gets cranky and ticked off
and then disappointed cause he’s stuck in the house of the day

  5. Joe

These ignorant selfish disease spreaders will have to return their business support payments.
They will also selfishly screw over their employees as well if they are on PUP payments.
Excellent to see the Gardai on site I hope they get the maximum applicable fines.

  6. dhaughton99

I noticed a few building sites have reopened over the past few weeks. The new build where the Steam packet co.was on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay comes to mind.

  7. Centerest Dad

she should have invoked admiralty law. Check the arresting garda for a golden fringe on their underwear elastic – “if the fringe ain’t golden, covidiots you must embolden”.

  8. kate

The vast majority abide by level 5 restrictions. It is criminal , disrespectful to allow 5,500 to fly in to the Republic from hotspots , including 2000 from Brazil who were apparently untested since December.

    1. Marguerite Tronçonneuse

FF’s donors in the meat industry need their Brazilian staff (to live and work in cramped, unhygienic conditions).

  9. Gavin

He has a partially valid point, I mean how long do we continue with this, another year, 2 years?. Seems to me the government hasn’t a clue and is always playing either catch-up or cover-up, you cant ask people to lockdown indefinitely, there has to be some point in time where we say right, time to start moving back to some form of normality.

    1. Lilly

+ 1 I’ve had enough of it and am willing to take my chances within reason now that the elderly have been vaccinated. We can’t put life on hold indefinitely.

  10. Micko

Once again I think the vast majority of people calling for lockdowns are in the “full pay working from home camp” or have worked the whole way through.

Genuine question, is there anyone here who has had their job or career taken away from them and is also pro lockdown?

    And why?

          1. Micko

Oh great – semantics. Brilliant… FFS

Let me say instead of “pro lockdown” – I can rephrase to simpler terms.

Is there anyone who has, or is in danger of losing their job or business, who also thinks that the lockdowns should continue?

And if you do – why?

And as an added bonus question. What’s your plan to get your job and or business back?

            Enquiring minds wanna know? ;)

          2. Hank

Hilarious how the very people who spent months labelling anyone who even dared question the government response with the frankly ridiculous “pro sickness” tag could now take offence at being labelled “pro lockdown”!

    1. K.Cavan

Great question, it would be nice to hear the Covid Cultists declare if they are in the Public Service, Health or Education or if they do a job that can be done from home, because it seems to me that those people live in a radically different world from the rest of us, the ones who’s taxes pay the government’s wages.

      1. Gavin

I work from home, it really hasn’t affected me in the slightest, in reality, it’s made things better for me. But do I think a lockdown is needed or should continue…hell no.

        1. Micko

Just out of curiosity Gavin. Were you doubtful of the lockdown over the past year or is a recent conclusion that you’ve come to.

I’ve spoken to friends on full pay too who were very much in favour the first time around, who have had a bit of a wobble about it lately and just want to get back to the office (and / or some normality)

Others never want to go back to the office – which is understandable too.

    2. Brother Barnabas

micko, pretty sure you’ll find there’s not a single person anywhere who’s “pro lockdown”

      nobody is enjoying this

      1. Hank

I suspect you could find many more people who are “pro lockdown” than you’d find people who are “pro sickness”.
Didn’t stop that ridiculous label being bandied about here on a daily basis for months in 2020..

      2. Diddy

Your missing the point Barney. Micko is correct. Supporting Lockdown in full pay is one thing. Supporting it while your business goes down the Swanny makes you a saint.

  11. K.Cavan

In 1981 we had 17,000 hospital beds, today we have 12,000 with a much higher population, so yes, we are in a Health Emergency but it predates Sars02.

  12. K.Cavan

I heard the head of the HSE on the radio, yesterday, saying a number of people with “the Brazilian Variant” had been detected at the airport. I’m in awe of this new technology that can not only tell that a person is infected but can detect which variant of Sars02 they have. Surely the head of the HSE couldn’t be lying?

    1. f_lawless

The “foreign variants of concern” narrative that has gone mainstream in recent times is political theatre. I think it’s no coincidence that it has coincided with vaccine rollout and the big push for digital “health passports”.

According to independent scientific advisory group HART:

      https://www.hartgroup.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/HART-Mutants-and-Borders.pdf

“(we) believe that closing international borders will not stop new mutations of theSARS-CoV-2 virus circulating in the UK population. It is a futile endeavour with no scientific basis.

Mutant variants, emerging overseas or domestically, are an inevitable biological reality once a virus is in the population

..There has to date been no robust scientific evidence provided that any variant so far identified is more transmissible or deadly than the original...

..Closing international borders to keep out ‘foreign mutants’ of an already endemic virus is neither useful nor possible.Mutant variants from abroad pose no extra threat to the citizens compared with homegrown variants and may even be identical in their sequences. In addition, once a virus is established in a population,as is the case in the UK, it will mutate slowly over time, irrespective of borders. That particular horse has already bolted and is a biological reality we must all learn to live with…

..It is a fallacy to assume that because the genome of a virus has been sequenced for the first time in a particular country, it must have originated in that country..Correlation does not equal causation. On the contrary, successful mutations with regard to natural selection will crop up everywhere. It is called convergent evolution. This is one reason the so-called ‘UK variant’ has already been found in over 46 countries..”

      1. Micko

Ah, I remember in the good ok days of 2020, when we warned of Vaccines passports and people called us “conspiracy nuts” and “kooks” and said “that’d never happen”

The other day on here someone told me “Vax apps were our way out of this thing”… sigh :(

An app…on the phone… that you bloody own… to tell you where you can and can’t go… in your own country.

Just like China and now Israel.

        2021 gonna be interesting…

  13. Bitnboxy

I see Ben Gilroy was up in Balbriggan encouraging the poor woman who runs the beauty salon. That tells me all I need to know.

Needless to say, a very Bodger post, dreaming of so-called Covid restrictions riots.

    Broadsheet, quo vadis?

      1. Brother Barnabas

would make a good chorus line for a country and western song

        is country your thing, crocodile?

    1. Micko

The “poor woman who runs the beauty salon”

I think you mean the “independent business owner of a successful beauty salon” who did what she had to do to draw attention to the fact that she has to pay rent and put food on her table for her children.

I listened to her and she didn’t need any help in putting her own point forward. She knew what she was doing.

“Poor woman”. Get outta here with that SEXIST rubbish @Bintboxy

You make it sound like she wasn’t behind the decision herself – that she need some bloke pulling her strings.

      Jesus…

      1. Bitnboxy

Erra go on out of that with your nonsense!

Ben Gilroy and his posse were just casually passing by I suppose?

        Set up.

        1. Micko

          Ah yeah. Go on.

It couldn’t have possibly been her idea and maybe she contacted “de posse” as she knew it would bring more media attention.

She sounds pretty media savvy to me.

Who do you think notified her customers that she’d be opening?

Did yer man Ben do that for her as well? I’m sure he and the posse were on the phone and sending emails all through the night for her.

As she stood there, nervously trembling biting her nails asking “are you sure this is a good idea Ben? What if I get in trouble Ben? Will I go to jail Ben? Help me Ben, Help me!”

          Go wan yeah. ;-)

          1. Steph Pinker

Haha, Micko, I think you’re one of the very few on BS who can argue your point in a witty manner without the need to resort to base levels; you’re growing a thicker hide by the day in your tolerance – fair play.

          2. Bitnboxy

No crisis is so bad that it can’t be made even worse.

Now, I read that this salon owner claims to be advised by “non-lawyer-lawyer” Ben Gilroy, you know Micko, the guy standing beside her “helping” her to read her statement. You do realise the High Court has previously banned him from giving legal advice? Of course you do.

And geriatric troll Dee Wall aka Dolores Webster with crutch or is it a sling now, managed to turn up too.

So sorry Micko, go on out of that with your auld bullsheet blather.

          3. Crocodile Dundalk

The pro lockdown dog in you is strong.

            Advisors.. Lol

FG has hired 64 special advisors to date. To go along with their top dog activists like Seamy “do as I say, not as I do” Woulfe, Frank gravy Flannery and Terry cover-up Prone..

            But Ben Gilroy…

          4. Bitnboxy

Guffaw. Anyone who disagrees with Gilroy’s alt-sheet stunt is a shadowy government operative. Love it.

I think Croc’s comment is the classic BS oven-ready response.

          5. Crocodile Dundalk

You mentioned Gilroy. I don’t give a fupp about him.

And you’re the gombeen with the conspiracy notions, you claimed its all a setup.

            Tinfoil merchant

          6. Bitnboxy

Literally a sea (well the usual faces) of the tinfoil hat brigade turned up to “assist” this lady and I’m the one with the tinfoil hat. I mean Dee Wall?!

            All on camera.

Treyvaud’s concerns are genuine. This lady is being used. Simple as that.
