“We Need Someone With Fire In Their Belly”

at

This morning.

Merrion Street, Dublin 2.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrives at government buildings for a cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile…

A Fianna Fáil cumann in a minister’s constituency (junior minister Thomas Byrne) is calling for the replacement of leader Micheál Martin.

In a letter seen by Independent.ie, his departure is demanded by the entire officer board of the party cumann in Slane, Co Meath.

Mr Martin, who took over the party a decade ago, is said to have presided over its becoming a “laughing stock” on occasion.

“We need someone with fire in his/her belly,” said the signatories in an open letter-email to all Fianna Fáil TDs and some of the party’s senators.

‘Ignore us at your peril’ – Fianna Fáil cumann calls for Micheál Martin to be replaced as party leader (Independent.ie)

    FF are a disaster
FG are running rings around them, trolling them almost and what’s worse is they’ve enabled it

    prediction, 5/1 odds:
    – FF eventually split
    – Mehole’s faction will join Lab on the sidelines waiting for 2-3 generations to pass so their misdeeds can be forgotten sufficiently for them to become relevant and trusted again
    – remainder will align with Mary Lou
    – SFF vs FG in next GE
    – SFF win

    any takers?

I thought there would be a heave against the FF “old guard” after the crash, so they could re-brand themselves. If that didn’t cause a split in the party, I can’t see this being the catalyst.

I think too many FF members are too conservative to consider change and just want to keep going and hope it gets better for them.

I think many FF members are too shocked about coalition with FG to give a twopenny damn about where the party ends up at this stage. They are probably, at this stage, ex-members anyway. The old guard are fast dying off, and the younger population aren’t bothered.

Can’t think of any current FF TD’s with fire in their belly… and certainly none with ministerial experience

        you would think so

but Fianna Fail are gone in Dublin, and I don’t think the FF old stock around the country will hoisting Jim up onto their shoulders anytime soon

If there’s a move against Mehall at all tis coming from within his own Constituency
But I reckon they’ll let him see out this Government term

the time to shift him was before the 2020 GE
especially in light of his Unity Poll blunder – which would be considered betrayal to grassroots eFFers
and his Confidence and Suppling to Leo, if that didn’t do him in then there’s every reason to expect the lad most likely will bide his time

How Irish politicians must look in envy at Boris, the man they traduced with enthusiasm, now enjoying a healthy lead in the polls and the golden glow of approval as Blighty’s vaccine roll-out leads Europe.
The Tory Toff having the last laugh.

You’ve obviously not been following events in Scotland over the last few weeks …

He’s doing the best a Muppet can do!

But honestly, he had no guile. Then again very few Taoiseachs in my life time have.

Is it a barnstorming platform orator they’re looking for? Michael Collins was one apparently, but he was a left footer. Sean Lemass preferred to speak at indoor meetings, and he talked sense. Dev of course knew his platforms, the wily man. Brian Lenihan was famous as a warmer-up before the main speaker got to speak. Who in today’s Fianna Fail can get up before a crowd and proclaim “Ich bin ein Berliner” ?
Television has outmoded the After Mass election meetings of yore. Television is however a manner of speaking without communicating one’s real feelings about things. Real life and conversation about public affairs is found outside the sittingroom gogglebox.

Fianna Fail are going down the toilet and they know it.
Fine Gael were the coffin nails that Micheal Martin and his fellow power craving idiots hammered into their own casket.

…you have to hand it to FG…they really are playing a stormer at the moment…to finish a poor third in the last election but to end up controlling things is a major achievement…the sham fight between FG and FF will maintain their base for another generation…SF and parties for change have missed their chance…there’ll always be some shower of opportunists to form the third leg of the stool without having to resort to the gene pool…thanks greens…

I really don’t think Micheál cares much. He’s made it to Taoiseach, that was his lifelong goal. Don’t think he a cares how it goes or how long he’s there really. He can die happy now.

If you want a sense of the state of Fianna Fail I think we should look at those earmarked potential leaders of the party, Thomas Byrne (coincidentally is the TD for Meath East), Norma Foley and Stephen Donnelly. FG have out maneuvered them by simply staying quiet and letting FF dig their own holes. My guess is that in the 2nd half of the coalition FG will turn on FF and blame them for all the restrictions of Covid whilst presenting themselves as saviours. FF will lose even more of a footing at the next election leaving FG and SF going head to head.

The EU has our backs™ ( Ireland edition )

Austria and Denmark have become the latest countries to decide to go it alone after Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic all negotiate for Covid-19 jabs outside of the EU scheme in a bid to speed up the vaccine roll-out programme.
Germany has already negotiated an independent deal for an additional 30 million doses months ago.
The EU bloc unity is crumbling before our eyes.
