    Charger’s Jab Jibber-Jabber™

    ( Record Breaking Edition )

The UK has smashed its previous record by delivering 660,276 vaccine doses in a single day.

That’s 1% of the population with an overall total of more than 28 million or 50% of the entire adult population.

And more in one day than Ireland’s entire vaccine roll-out.

Hardly surprising then that as the record tumbled the big feller got his jab too.

Meanwhile, and I never thought I’d ever write this, spare a thought for the people of France as the country is plunged into another lockdown with spiralling infections.
Under its hapless leader Napoleon Macron their AZ vaccine strategy so far has been a list of lamentable failures.

Taxi for Ursula The Unready …

” Pfizer has warned the EU to back down from its threat to block vaccines to the UK because the firm needs crucial ingredients shipped from the UK.
The drugmaker and its partner BioNTech have told Brussels that the UK has the power to retaliate against any export ban by withholding raw materials needed for its jab.
Croda International, a chemicals firm based in Snaith, Yorkshire, has been delivering vital “fatty molecules” to Pfizer’s factories in the EU since signing a five-year contract with the firm in November.
It is one of the few companies in the world able to supply the crucial substance.
Croda told the stock exchange earlier this year that its contract with Pfizer to deliver four ingredients would generate $125 million in sales this year, adding that it was quadrupling the capacity of its UK factory to meet demand.
Pfizer and BioNtech are understood to have warned EU leaders that production at the main vaccine factory in Belgium could “grind to a halt” within weeks if the UK moved to prevent deliveries from crossing the Channel. “

Some good news for Ireland though.
The HSE says it will resume using AstraZeneca today – starting “with a relatively modest number” of people.
If it’s “relatively modest” by existing rollout standards then it’s going to be very very modest indeed.
      I wonder if they’ll beat last Sunday’s total of 306 ?

    4. Charger Salmons

It’s been an open secret for weeks of course but any Irish citizen over 50 with an old NHS number from their time in Blighty is full entitled to travel north for a jab.

      http://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/high-court/north-waives-sanctions-on-eligible-republic-residents-seeking-covid-vaccine-1.4515924

      Here’s the link.
      https://covid-19.hscni.net/get-vaccinated/

The only requirement is that when you drive across the border you’re obliged to wind down your car window and shout ” well done Boris and thanks a lot Blighty ” at the top of your voice.
It seems a small price to pay in fairness.

“Simon McGonagle has been disqualified from racing for nine months at a referrals hearing of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board after being found responsible for taking the photograph that led to trainer Gordon Elliott’s suspension.

Seven months will be suspended for a period of one year, after which the disqualification lapses. The sanction takes effect from April 16.”

Yeah – very important to find whoever took the photo and make an example of him.

The Daily Star is a rag. Any chance you could stop including it. The Brexit attack on Europe is so pathetic. I hope Irish people don’t start believing the rubbish the gullible Brits fell for.

    1. bisted

…some of the 660276 ‘gullible brits’ vaccinated yesterday might include some Irish who voted for Brexit…their reason may have been different from their neighbour though…

      1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I was shocked to find out my brother voted for Brexit. Polish people coming to England, lowering wages, that was the reason. Nothing ironic there.

Aren’t Australia gearing up to leave the Commonwealth after Liz pops her clogs? Along with NZ and Barbados, among others.

            @formerly

Maybe you can confirm my comment above? I’m only going on what I’ve read, specifically in relation to the future/inevitable break up of the Commonwealth after the death of the Queen. As far as I’ve been given to understand, she has made it her life’s work and it is only respect for her as monarch that is keeping it together. After her death it is anticipated that a number of larger nations within the Commonwealth (including Aus and NZ) which will accelerate the dissolution of the last vestiges of ‘the Empire’.

I’d be curious to hear what people in Australia actually think.

          5. Charger Salmons

When you stand to attention for the Aussie flag do you avert your gaze from the Union Jack still proudly displayed on it ?

          6. Papi

The last time poor charger stood to attention it was due to a blue pill. Still didn’t get the ride though.

            @Millie,

The consensus is that there will be a referendum on Australia becoming a republic after Liz Windsor is no longer on the throne. It is more likely to pass next time. NZ doesn’t seem as quick to move on this. I don’t see any country leaving the “Commonwealth”. It is seen as a way for Aussies to win medals at the Comm’ Games, not much else. I don’t mind Ireland joining the Commonwealth if it helps gain unity. It is pretty much a non-entity.

          8. millie bobby brownie

What a wonderful success for the Irish this week at Cheltenham. They’ve demonstrated their talents, their usual superiority both on and off a horse and drained every last penny from the Brits. Have a nice weekend y’all x

      1. Charger Salmons

That dead horse at Cheltenham – did the Irish contingent queue for a photo op ?

        1. Charlie

No but the Brits wanted to purchase it to enhance their chances of success for next year.
          *back of the net*

          1. Charger Salmons

As Ireland will still be under lockdown next year waiting for a vaccine it looks like the Cheltenham brassers won’t be seeing any farmyard-smelling euros again.

  5. Charger Salmons

Was Health Minister Stephen Donnelly at Cheltenham ?
Because he hasn’t been seen anywhere in Ireland this week.
Since Ireland postponed the use of the AZ vaccine his British counterpart Matt Hancock has carried out dozens of media interviews and been cross-examined in Parliament.
And the UK has administered nearly 2.5 million Covid vaccines.
What exactly does Slaphead do with his time ? Count every individual vaccine as it’s given ?

Purveyor of facts and statistics that support your opinion you mean? How come dissenting voices on the vaccine rollout are being ignored or ridiculed? Why don’t the media engage with the likes of Ivor Cummins and Geert Vander Bossche (etc) and address their concerns? Until they do there will always be people too scared too go and get vaccinated. If they could successfully argue against these people they’d get 100% compliance, but instead they will soon be down to issuing threats. I find it amazing the people will gladly take a vaccine, that isn’t and never was considered a vaccine. Who’s makers instantly insisted on a waiver of responsibility from and that is now banned by many EU nations. Would you buy a car that is uninsurable, that some experts say is a death trap and that has been banned in several nations? No you would not. Cognitive dissonance in action.

We all know it goes on, but to see it laid out like all in one place. Yikes. The money changing hands is mental!

I know that some may question the source, but it makes for interesting viewing either way.

      1. Micko

I’m the same formerly, lots of dodgey stuff there and it’s obv politically motivated to cause disruption and to get people on side with them.

But even a stoped watch is right twice a day… etc etc

        1. Unreal

No it isn’t, do you not understand the concept of time? A stopped clock is not fulfilling the basic function of a timepiece which is to accurately record the passage of time. So it’s not “right”, twice a day: it just gives that misleading impression to people like you who lack the critical faculties to fully evaluate the issue.

          1. Micko

            You’re dead right.

            That’s the important issue here.

My correct or incorrect use of the “stopped watch” analogy.

            Christ… pedant much?

So yer a grammar Nazi as well as a Time Nazi eh Unreal?

            Hmmm. ‘Time Nazi’…

That gives me an idea for a book.

            To the library!!!!

    1. Lilly

This is such nonsense. The idea that Susan Mitchell, for example, had her eye on a Government job and was just biding her time at the Sunday Business Post… ludicrous. I’m willing to bet that most of these ex-journos would have been quite happy to continue as journalists but it just wasn’t viable. When did you last buy the Sunday Business Post? I presume these advisory positions end as soon as the politician in question gets booted out, so no security of tenure, hence the salary weighting.

        1. Lilly

I wasn’t addressing you specifically, Micko. My point is there aren’t enough subscribing Mickos about to keep print journalism afloat, which is why newspapers continue to contract, spewing people into other sectors. It has nothing to do with them having their eye on the main chance from the outset.

PS – Anyone who subscribes to the Indo has my sympathy.

          1. Micko

Sick burn on the Indo there. Sure ya can’t beat a aul journalism based berating eh?

Anyway, you’re of course right about the politicians when they leave office and the salary weighing of the “journos” they employ.

As we all are painfully aware, the second a politician leaves office, they spontaneously combust into the ether, never to be seen again.

Which I of course think is a terrible waste.

It would be much better when they leave office to employ them with lucrative private industry contracts and places on boards of private companies which they aided during their time in office.

Which of course would be a win win situation for the journalists who helped them along the way, as they would be brought into these private companies as contractors.

It would be a much better system than the “spontaneous combustion” model we have now.

            What a terrible waste… :(

            #WontSombodyThinkOfThePolitcians

          2. Lilly

I didn’t mean to berate you for buying the Indo, it was more a comment on the paper. I’m genuinely mystified as to why anyone would pay for it.

          3. Micko

Ah I’m only winding you up back Lilly. Yer grand. ;)

In fairness on the Indo – it’s not great alright, but I have a subscription to most of the Irish papers for my business.

I do like the SBP though.

      1. Lilly

Thanks for this link, Giggs. I filled it out but there were a few annoying optional addendums at the end and no submit button at each stage (to hit if you decided not to give the extra info) so I’m not even sure if it went. They should have had a submit button before each addendum and an acknowledgment that it had been successfully submitted.

As it was, I just closed it half-way through the second addendum and was left hoping that their system grabbed the inputted data and that I hadn’t wasted my time. As with a lot of things RTE do, it wasn’t very satisfactory. I also wish I’d read Vanessa’s January rundown here before filling it it as I would have left additional comments in the freestyle section, such as get some new blood on your board of directors.

Hard to believe that’s your genuine response after watching that video. Don’t you have any empathy at all? The young woman is clearly in a lot of pain and distress

        1. ce

Bit like the pain and distress, gasping for air as a person dies from Covid that somebody with a pre-exisiting condition caught from an idiot who wouldn’t ware a mask?

Lockdowns are stupid and point to a failed government, endangering people by gathering and/or not following public health advice because the government is bad … is also stupid

          1. f_lawless

I almost feel embarrassed on your behalf for that sanctimonious response.
Question: when one observes that public health advice from a particular group is ill-conceived, myopic, not aligned with real-world evidence, politicised, and contradicted by other credible health experts, would it be ‘stupid’ to still have faith in it regardless?

    2. Fearganainm

So there’s no mass protest movement containing enough hardy men to storm the gardaí lines and rescue the damsel in distress? Skulking and muttering and surreptitiously filming is hardly action enough to win anyone a Cogadh na Saoirse medal. And if I was on the awarding body I wouldn’t be accepting tweets or other social media posts as proof of valour either. For all their bluster I’d say that ‘the resistance’ is a beaten docket.

Today saw a set of coordinated protests in cities around the world. Some of them were massive. Dublin’s was small in comparison. Oh well. It’s not really a consolation, but I suppose when I look back over these times in years to come I’ll at least be able to say I was one of those who took to the streets in some kind of protest as the liberal democratic society which we’d been accustomed to was being rapidly eroded before us

  20. Steph Pinker

As much as I agree with David Langwallner’s pov on many issues he covers on BS, I was very surprised to hear that he defended John Gilligan in the 90s; of course Gilligan was innocent until proven guilty and he has a right to legal defense and due process, but it seems to go against the grain of a human rights lawyer to represent such a character, or, are some more entitled than others? Why’s the moral compass needle pointing in that direction rather than an other? The deflection from subject to topic was well done though.

    1. GiggidyGoo

Solicitors can’t refuse to represent someone (I think). Didn’t Jim O’Callaghan represent Gerry Adams?

      1. Steph Pinker

I’ve no idea about O’ Callaghan-Adams so I can’t comment, but what I alluded to in my post above is what you’ve just defined – to ‘represent’ someone. It’s long been known that Gilligan (I’m using JG as an example because David referred to him in TT), was/is a criminal since the 80s with multiple convictions, one of which is for murder; is it discretionary or dichotomous for *any* barrister of human rights to represent a drug dealing, murdering criminal?

Do ethics or morals have a price, or is it just a case of being pragmatic and getting the client off, ironically at all costs?
